The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I personally feel that Ella Fitzgerald is the greatest non-classical female singer of the 20th century.
And Billie Holiday the most important.
I personally feel that Ella Fitzgerald is the greatest singer.

While Billie Holiday was an important voice of her time, I believe most important also goes to Ella as well. If it had not been for her stepping up and taking over as both lead & director of her band after her husband died, none of these female singers, BLACK & WHITE ALIKE, would be where they are today. And, because of that, they owe her every ounce of respect she is due & so justly deserves.
I know it's a free country and everyone is allowed their own opinion. But, I just wanted to give you something to think about, purely out of my love of the truly greatest voice of jazz, blues, big band & even classical. Her rendition of Gershwin's "Summertime" from her final concert in Germany still makes me cry.
Just speaking out of our shared love for an amazing artist.
There's absolutely nobody that can begin to compare to this amazing vocal queen! She is what everyone who's ever tried to scat wishes they were, but knows they'll never be. Although it had already existed, Ella is the reason scat became such an integral part of jazz.
I mentioned her final concert in Germany in another reply to you. But, one of her last songs of that concert was "Mr. Paganini". She surprised the audience with 18 minutes of scatting that included parts from nearly 100 different songs. And she received an almost 10 minute standing ovation.
I fell in love with her voice when I was only 4 or 5. Now, I'm pushing 60, and my love for her has only gotten stronger.
@@Nacho-Mamma Ella is the greatest singer of the 20th century, but Billie Holiday is the most important. Lady is the one who taught all of us what it was to sing like an American. I used to work in a department store with a woman who sang with Les Brown. When I mentioned Billie Holiday, she immediately cut me off and said "Everybody copped her phrasing." And it's true. She is the most influential singer of the 20th century.
The late great Nancy Wilson said Ella Fitzgerald is the gold standard to this day and this performance is 100% proof of that . Just simply effortless.
Absolutely superb. The a capella verse, the tempo changes, the phrasing, and of course, the voice and the scat singing. She was the best.
Ella and Whitney had a once in a lifetime purity in their voices my goodness
Ella was a living music machine. You could take away the band and she’s still be enthralling. Brava!
America and the World misses you.
*Her voice makes angular progressive jazz feel like a warm cozy home...*
There is simply not such a fabulous singer in existence like Ella! No one can top her!
Ella had perfect pitch, the master of scatting
Ella was simply the greatest 💜
I'm nostalgic for a year as gamey as 1968 was, because America still had the sanity of taste left to appreciate something this glorious.
And Glorious, She was! What a voice, Ella had.
Very well said.
Ella is magic and "Paganini" is a perfect showcase for her awesome talent.
Ella was the master of music. Her voice was the whole orchestra. I absolutely adored her.♥
That’s mistress of music
Neponovljivo i nikada se tako neštoneće ponoviti divno igor❤❤❤❤❤
There are loads of recordings of Ella singing this song, always with a combo. This performance, someone wrote out horn parts for the big band to join her for the last few bars. AWESOME addition, and you can hear her step up. Ella was amazing!
Great camera Quality for 1968
Agree -- one reason I'm a fan of 1960s variety shows given the camera would linger, dolly, crane shots, etc. --- rather than the absolute frantic cutting between cameras that we have today.
My funeral song - hopefully not for a decade or two. Love Ella!
I love this song that much, too. There is something so glamorous about this song I could cry, because it highlights what we've lost. As for Ella, we never deserved someone that talented.
Perfection - Thank-you Ella
Wow! Her tempo is so steady!
There are young people who still listen to Ella in 2024, I'm here ❤❤❤
I'm here to!!!
Ella Fitzgerald had a perfect voice, everytime i listen im amazed by her beautiful voice, there's no one quite like her
the way she sings is just so effortless i just UGH!!!
The greatest female popular singer America ever produced. We had others, but Duke Ellington was right when he said that she was "beyond category."
ED SULLIVAN SHOW, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

Она потрясающая, божественная певица
That bit when she sings ‘and from a balcony way up high’ was so unbelievably clear that a tingle went right down my spine, best female singer ever
Same here
The Queen of the American Songbook with the finest palates ever. The greatest string player never recorded (save his compositions) deserves no less.
Génétiquement habitée par le jazz et le swing

Anyone know what mic that is she’s using
Ihre Hände so topfkratzer
Joh bass
Ganze Team war bei ohnen
They both say/sing ^Paganinny' yet she doesn't sing 'minny'. Anyone else find this weird?
Ella hit notes beautifully, but she didn't sing "stories" as did Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra, as two examples. I felt she was going for pitch and perfection, not performance. Personally, scat singing leaves me cold.
wdym she didn’t sing stories??? she had multiple forms of performing a single song, maybe u can’t connect with some of her records because she did a lot of stuff instead of just singing, a lot of decorations and also improvisation, but you can’t say that her performance wasn’t artistically rich, i can see a lot of intentions in her musical decisions
She sang stories, you just weren't listening.
And now we have Bad Bunny et alii....music today sucks * in general ...and the delinquent style ....
I guess, Ella was a component of "Body positively. " before, "Body positively. " When you didn't get awards for it. (Her legs however were eventually amputated, & she lost most of her vision. )
Fantastica.
