This model ditches the old P90 pickups and gives you a humbucker single single arrangement. With an eye catching sunburst finish and an included gig bag, either price is tough to say no to.

Guitar Max Beyond Thunderdome. Two Guitars Enter. One Guitar Leaves. Sounds like a good idea for a series of comparison vids.
If you like that idea, you should checkout 60 Cycle Hum. He's only done a couple of videos for it so far, but Ryan there is doing a shootout series called Afford-a-Strat. First video features the Indio Cali Classic. He bought it from Amazon for about $200 before he found out he could have gotten it for $100 direct from Monoprice.
This one does have the traditional Jazzmaster look!! I own one of the Monoprice Indio HSS Stratocasters. I have been very happy with it from the minute I unpacked it. (All I did was adjust the string height to my personal preferences. Unlike another commenter mentioned, I had zero problems with fret sprout or need to polish the frets with my purchase. Then again, I polish the frets on my guitars with every string change, and sometimes in between. I've had to polish frets on an out of the box Epiphone Les Paul from Sweetwater, so ordering online, you get what you get and proceed from there. Polishing frets to me is regular recurring situation on all my guitars, so I never complain about that.) If you are willing to wait, they do discount them from time to time, so that means your $ 150.00 price just decreased. Also, if they are out of stock, just put your name on the "Notify Me When In Stock" notification list and you'll be informed the minute they arrive. I read that they also run them, or at least they did mine a year and a half ago, through a set-up process (all that was included in their set-up was never mentioned) before the guitars are shipped!!! Right now this particular guitar (as well as several others) has free shipping. In the sense of full disclosure...I have "only," and will continue to only order Monoprice Indio Guitars and Stage Right Amplifiers "from" Monoprice. I would never pay more to purchase the same guitar (or Amp) from Amazon. I've been purchasing from Monoprice for over 15 years with zero problems. Great Review Max!!! Thank you.
Was able to order a white one today for the crazy price of just $70.12. It'll be my fourth Indio---I couldn't say "no" at that price! Thanks for all you do, Max! Your sense of humor always makes me laugh! Keep shredding!
Just got one a couple of days ago for exact same price. It is unreal you can buy a guitar that plays this well for that price. Just crazy but I like it.
I like the look and sound of this guitar. Thanks for creating and posting, Max
Thanks for finding this guitar and sharing. I've been on the lookout for a different kind of budget guitar like this. Great work as always
Love your budget reviews. Keep them coming!
Thanks, GM. Your research has blessed me through the years. Happy holidays, bro!
Max, you are my Guitar Authority, when it comes to hear!! Strictly Top Shelf. Keep up the high standards you have set for others to follow. Love the sword for unboxing. It should be nothing less.
Love your appreciation for all types of guitars. 🤘🏻
Love the shape very comfortable to play. Bought the OS-30 when it was on sale and it been great a great way to try this style with out breaking the bank.
Mad Max beyond Thunder Dome! classic movie saw it when it came out in the theaters 🎭 nice to see a younger person as yourself who app appreciates 80’s style metal i’m 50 i grew up during the rise of hair metal and shred guitar been playing 30+ years now 🤘🏻🎸🎸🎶
Every time you leave a review to show people where to buy them really cheap the prices go up thanks a lot for spilling the beans again as usual
Got mine this morning, loving it. Its the white one which was on sale all week for $119 direct from Monoprice
As usual great content and brilliant playing. Plain kick ass stuff.
You sold me, dude! I just ordered the P90 version of this guitar. Excited for it's arrival. I got it for $87 shipped.
Another RUclips channel - Jimmy Stewart, another budget conscious specialist guitar channel- just had this particular model. It is a good value, but do expect to take it to your tech for fret sprout and polishing. The truth is, though, every guitar bought online likely needs a tech setup. At thst low price, it's worth doing. If you can DIY, even better. The Golden Age of Guitar rolls on! Good vid, Max!
I agree. However, every serious guitar player needs to be able to do their own set-up and repairs. It's far from rocket science, and will save a LOT of money. Rock on!
@@perihelion7798 Exactly. I learned how to do everything from RUclips videos. Bought the tools and save a ton of $. A set up +strings+tax= about $65. I have nearly 40 electrics. I'd go broke.
@@perihelion7798 They charge $75 per pickup to swap. FTN! Have them do it and it's $400 set up pups etc on a $150 guitar again FTN!
@@davidkastin4240 I've done all my work from the time I started playing in 1962 and had no idea everything I was doing to make my 4th-hand-me-down Harmony Archtop actually had a term. Setup!!!! As a young teenager!?!?!? Who knew!?!?!?!?! It makes common sense to learn to do your own work. "And" if you did order this guitar and it required some fretwork!?!?!? What better entry level guitar to actually "Learn how to do Fretwork, and Setups!?!?!?!?!?" Great comment!!!
@@perihelion7798 Totally Agree. However, now that I've been on this planet almost 3/4 of a century, I have corneal problems which create major problems with me trying to do any close soldering. I learned the hard way because I've been soldering and changing components for years...right up until I ruined a circuit board because of my vision and resulting hand-eye coordination problems. Dammit...I hate when that happens!!! Growing old ain't for the faint at heart!!!! (Yes that was an attempt at humor.) I have a couple of minor changes I'd like to make on a couple of guitars requiring intricate (for me with my physical challenges at this point in my life) soldering that when I was younger was no big deal cause me to either spend the extra $$$$ and purchase higher end guitars that have what I want...Or...Live with what I have and "wish" I could still do what I ustacould!!!! But when it comes to setup, dressing fret ends / fret sprout, and fret polishing!?!?!? I still got that covered!!! (And am thankful I still can!!!!!) My biggest fear is when arthritis finally makes it where I can't play, but I'll fight that every step of the way!!!! Great Comment!!!
TWO MEN ENTER
ONE MAN LEAVES
Thunderdome!
Also I just picked up one of the Slick SL57s in tuxedo finish. I don't have any guitars with single coils so it'll be cool to add that to the arsenal. I watched your Slick videos and it did help in my decision.
Aw man...I was really hoping to hear you get down on some Jazz standards with this Jazzmaster. I know you've got it in you, Max.
I own a couple of monoprice guitars and I love them I've had no problems with them other than having to file down the frets a little bit and that's it. little bit of fret sprouts . fantastic guitars as far as I'm concerned one of the best budget friendly guitars.
I gotta Helix about a year ago. For the price, I dunno if you can beat it.
TWO MEN ENTER, ONE MAM LEAVE, master. BLASTER run bartertown!
Max I love your channel man I’m laying here in a hospital bed fresh out of kidney surgery missing my guitars. Your videos never disappoint keep it up man! 👍
I wish you a speedy recovery - well aware, your babies are waiting for you. Great, you have some comfort during all the pain and discomfort. Perhaps you can have a traveller guitar at the hospital soon? Do yo have a time line? Love from Denmark
love that triumph vinyl in the back🤘
Great review as always Max. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Loved those movies.
You are an intelligent, well spoken young man Max. Damn good player too! I'm going to buy one of those, hope mine sounds as good as yours. Enjoyed the video.
Two men enter…one man leaves!!! 🔥 🔥🔥. You crack me up
Oh yeah that movie, what was it,... Mad Guitar Max- Before Guitar Dome?? 😂 Embargo On!!
Great video Max as always! I have several of the Idio's and you're right for the money you just can't beat them. Even if only for a modding platform you can't go wrong.
Oh, what's a little fallout?
Triumph vinyl album in the background! Rik Emmett is one of my favourite 80’s guitar players. I’m going to check out that cool jazz master.
Max, I have a 97 Fender Jagmaster Vista series from Japan that is dual humbucker equipped with LP style 3 way and it is a beast for tone. I love the Jaguar/Jazzmaster bodyshape granted it is a bit more real-estate than a tele or strat but what it adds in tone and balance as you demonstrated here more than compensates for the added bulk. I have more hours logged on that guitar than any of the other 13 I own it is slightly heavier than my strats, teles, and LPs but is far more comfortable to do long sessions standing and it produces a tone that you cannot find from other Fender shapes.
What is even more interesting is that the statement of tonal ability rings even more true when comparing the acoustasonic line of Fender. The Jazzmaster/Jaguar bodied acoustasonic has a far better tonal range than its Telecaster and Stratocaster siblings.
I think a H/S/H setup with a Freeway 5+5 switch in this bodystyle would be epic tonally. For what that Indio model costs you could mod the snot out of it and have a pretty insane axe for around 600 dollars. I might have to buy one strictly for a project guitar to test the theory Lol!.
After watching this review and Johnathan Koh's review of the JOYO UZI distotion pedal, I think I wil buy both and pair them together. Thanks Max! Your reviews are awesome!!
THAT is fantastic. Old school in the best way.
From Leo: Amazing timing, I bought a White one a week ago. It was pretty easy set it up, no shims or any other tricks needed. . The fret board has rounded edges and no fret sprout. I play clean 99% of the time so I really do not care for the ceramic pickup voicing, but I bought it because I have some Fender Jaguar pickups I will be installing soon. Tuners and bridge are ok, nothing special. When you buy a whole guitar with a decent neck for the less than a replacement body, how can you go wrong? I already have a couple of JazzMasters, so I am pretty happy with the shape. Even the gig bag is pretty good with padding all around. Monoprice gave good service.
Max you were flying on that guitar....thanks!
The Goldtop in my avatar is an Indio and it's the best guitar I've ever played. It was perfect when I got it and all I've done in 13 months is change strings and play it. It really is that great. I love it!
You rock it!
I am ordering one!
Thank you!
Give that boy the P-90's, sales will flourish. I'll buy one right away.
There is a version with ‘soapbar’ pickups but they don’t say P90. You could replace em with better pups though.
I bought one of these as a project guitar and I love it
At $149 that's pretty awesome! At $241 (the price I found on Amazon), I'd rather get the Squier Affinity Jazzmaster for 10 bucks more, but that one has two humbuckers. I have a Fender Blacktop Jazzmaster with the classic jazzmaster pickup on the neck and a humbucker on the bridge, and for me that's the best of both worlds.
You know I love the shape. The strat look is so common that your worn out on the band at the bet go. The jazz master look is refreshing to me. That big top horn creates a fine balance . It sounds good and seems to not buzz or mute. What kind of strings did you put on it? I can’t decide on the sunburst or white. I’m leaning more towards the white. I like the ivory knobs and switch. I may have missed some info. Anyway great video, informative and clean. I’ve seen many reviews of entry level guitars and I gotta say Indio and all the rest are pretty good except I don’t like squire. But it’s kinda like Honda. Versus Cadillac in the early days. Then lookout here came the cheap competition and blew domestic cars away. Same with any of the guitar brands they are all good at 1/3 the price. Fender, Gibson and the others better take notice I’d say .
Your playing is getting better
Conveniently just a few days before my birthday I was able to snatch the sunburst one for 100 bucks even. It arrived *before* my birthday and I love how it sounds. Since I mainly play metal I have things like schecters laying around, so having a guitar like this up my sleeve for when I want to play my favorite songs (such as dont fear the reaper) is absolutely perfect.
The only thing I'd complain about is that it can't hold tuning very well, but that's a very easy fix. Set up out of the box is questionable at best but again, that's a very easy fix and considering Monoprice is a big company that ships across the country it would be far more than unfair to neg points for the weird setup.
The Jazz Master Blaster blasted my ass back to the past when I used to skip class to smoke grass! You played it so fast! Way past the skills I've amassed. At last a classy Jazzmaster at a price I can't pass!
You're quite the wordsmith, mr shannon
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. That little dude in Tina Turner’s posse. 😁
That sounds beautiful...............wow..........
i really like the guitar......it launched tons of careers.....Johnny Marr.......Bernard Butler (Suede) etc
really funky.........
Thx
Great review, thanks
I like the shape. Sounds very good🎸🎸🎸
Man, can't we just get beyond Thunderdome?
Never!
checking out your solo instructional looks good
Max, you sound Mad. Welcome to Thunderdome!
Not shit! Energy!
Two guitars enter, one guitar leaves.
You are the king of guitar dude
great job max
Nice shreddly jam in the beginning dude
Can you work on some other riffs or solo formations on old school guitars ?
Metal is great. But some variety works well…..
Help us out.
thanks for doing this review - I've been looking at this guitar for a while now, I may have to sell some pedals and pick one up. I'm curious about the new Indio p90 LP style guitars too!
Ric Ocasek used to play a pink Jazzmaster. I thought it was the coolest guitar ever at the time. Nice video.
Thanks they are almost all sold out thanks a lot, we use eBay and Amazon for a reason, I'm going to order 20 off Monoprice thanks for the tip
Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. Not a fan of the jazz master style body. I love strats. BTW, wanted to thank you for your comments you have made about the AIO Wolf guitars. I picked up a LP in the black burst and love it. Keep doing what you do.
Love the Indios, BUT there are a few mods I always do to an Indio.
Some have a little fret sprout nothing bad ever, but I check the frets anyway. The pick-ups leave a bit to be desired, so I strip the strip mags off and replace them with alnico 5s. Then I rewax em. ( if you can't afford 6 cent magnets, 30 cents worth of wax, and a $1.00 sause pan from goodwill, then you probably couldn't afford $160 guitar in the first place)
Next, at some point, usually sooner than later the little cheap pots that come in Indios corrode up so badly they start making noise, so I up grade the wiring asap. The springs in the trem are always a little weak and make em hard to tune, and keep in tune so I just add an extra spring.( I find "parts casters" on the internet for little to nothing, or sometimes the pawn shops will have an old "hanger queen" that's been dropped too many times in the bargain bin). The strings that come on Indios are supposed to be DeAdario 10s but I'm not sure, we change out for Ball 8s or 9s just because that's our style and my little rock stars play more when their fingers don't hurt, lol. For me half the fun of Indios is: you're in em low, at a price you can afford the mods and turn em into a real player over time.
This has everything I want. Jazzmaster body, HSS config, ceramic pups (I know it's not "premium" but you can get some awesome post-punk cleans and solid high-gain tones if you dial them in right) and of course the price point. Ordered.
Really love this guitar design, been dying for a jazzmaster with a strat setup that isn’t ludicrously expensive, but the pickups on this seem just a little bit too bright for me, could be the amp though, ironically still sounds better then some squiers I’ve hear though lol
I wish my experience was like yours. Mine had fret ends so awful they cut my hands, they were leveled well though. I had to dress both sides of every fret. Also I find the pickups are best described as "mud buckers". The tuners are okish. It is a cool upgrade platform though with a cool vibe. A fret dress, set of Duncan's, locking tuners, strap locks, and new string trees later I'm suprised its actually a viable gigging backup or one off tuning guitar. Even seems to stay in tune when pounding on the vib arm. But after a good setup.
Mad max beyond Thunder Dome!
I like ur playing...its very very good \m/
I might strip it and use it for a modding platform. I don't like the color but the shape is really cool. Thanks.
*THUNDERDOME!*
TWO GUITARS ENTER; ONE GUITAR LEAVES!
Unfortunately, we do need another hero to show us life beyond the Thunderdome - a hero like Guitar Max.
The one on the Amazon website that is more money has P90 pickups and has the classic JM bridge. They are different models. Amazon sells both of the models though.
i'd love to see you do a guitar collection video
Seems at excellent product considering the price... good looking too!
That sounds great
Nice looking guitar Max. I have a Tahoma jazz master you should check out. It was only $240. Nice heavy body with a mode dial. Made on Brazil i think.. they have higher price guitars as well.. Some of their guitars can't be shipped to America because if exotic wood regulations. You should check it out.
I like the Triumph album in the background
Mad Guitar Max - Beyond Thunderdome.
Yes!
The Monoprice 5 and 15 watt amps are top notch. If these guitars are of similar quality I would think it would quite good.
I was just playing my Indio Retro Classic (TL style axe) when your video popped up in my feed. It happens to have a sunburst finish as well, how cool is that? I bought this with the intention to use it as modding platform, but so far I have only installed a new pickguard and string trees as everything else works great. And that gig bag, man... these should be a standard in more expensive categories. Overall, these Indio guitars are pretty good and now I want this new one. Monoprice is really making some noise these days!
Late to the party but hey, the film is Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
Never played a Jazzmaster of any kind but I do like the shape. Might have to check this one out. I like the idea of smaller frets.
Hey brotha ty for the killer videos there are so many guitars I want to buy that I have shown I ordered a indio so20 white one off reverb couldn't find it alot of places
1:00 FENDER jazz masters never had p90s, at least not normally, as P90s are GIBSON pickups.
yes, that is correct, Jazzmaster pickups are wide, flat single coils where the p-90 are a lot thicker and not as wide. They are similar, and a lot of people really don't know the difference. They both are capable of some great tones.
Great video. I agree with the citizens of Barter Town, you could make a rake with 2 strings sound great and pierce my ear drums.
I'll say it once again MAX could make a 2×4 with strings sound awesome
First - props for the Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome reference. Australia thanks you. The JM body is my all time fave. I have a vintage modified JM that is my favourite guitar to play. If you haven't played an offset body guitar, DO YA'SELF A FAVOUR! (Another Australianism - also the correct way to spell favour.)
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome heh heh. I actually had a Harley Benton JA-60 with the Wilkinson P-90 pups, & at around $125 it was the best guitar for the money I’d ever come across, it played & sounded great. I sold it to guitarist in my son’s band, cuz he desperately needed an axe ASAP on the cheap. Was glad to help him out, but I’ve regretted it ever since! Especially since they switched to Roswell pickups & ya can’t have them shipped to the states cuz of CITES restrictions or something. This guitar looks great, but like you I don’t like those trem bridges, but unlike you, I’d prefer P-90s on a guitar like that
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome!
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome 🐇
From one Max to another..
Mad Max Beyond the Thunerdome"
Ehhhh!
Hi Max - This is 100% off topic, but I was thinking about that double-necked guitar you bought that turned out not to be so good. Here’s an idea. I know that on your channel you don’t usually do mods that are as extensive as that one requires. What if you teamed up with another RUclips channel that does do more mods - like Darrell Braun - and the two of you collaborate on the guitar? It is a DOUBLE-NECK after all, so two heads are better than one!
You could work together to scope out the new specs. Having different paying styles, you might come up with something really unique. And you could even do a combined video at the end where the two of you alternate playing tracks that combine the top and lower necks! Like on one take, Darrell (or whoever you collaborate with) is playing the 12 string neck as a backing track, and recorded alongside that is you playing lead on the 6 string neck! And then mid-song, you guys could switch!
It could be complicated and a lot of work but if you had the right partner, it could be a really cool finished guitar and video. But who would get to keep the guitar? Maybe your have to cut it in two at the end. Heck, it already has separate electronics :)
HAHA...Love the MadMax Beyond Thunderdome reference lol...Master runs Barter Town. lol, I do love the Jazzmaster look.
Right no!
@@GuitarMAXMusic Yes sir!
@@GuitarMAXMusic Last of the V8 Interceptors!!!
I had a couple of Monoprice/Indio guitars. They make good guitars.
They call it a Jazzmaster you're holding, but it's a Jaguar ...
Been looking at one of these for a while. Really don't need another guitar, but love the body style. Was it "The Last Dragon"?
just watching this. super late. But, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is the movie you reference! Great movie, and great review.
Have you heard of Fazley Guitars, they do brand new electric guitars from £66 upwards to around £159, they do a Jazzmaster with triple p90 style pickups for £105. And a set neck Les Paul style for £122, they also do an SG style, Rickenbacker style, 335 style
I have a few Indios and the only issue is the fret ends are sharp. But for the money, it is hard to complain about it.
I like big frets and I cannot lie. I appreciate the Mad Max reference from this guy!
Mad max beyond thunderdome
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Pretty sweet guitar for the money.
While the bridge sounds a bit muddy to me.. but for $150 you really can’t complain. That’s such a great value for a guitar.
Interesting guitar Max.
Mad Max beyond the thunder dome. I just watch an amazing documentary about mad max. Did you know Mel Gibson wasnt even an actor. He gave his friend a ride to the audition. And he was in a bar fight the night before and was pretty banged up. And the director knew he found his max! How cool is that ?
Used your affiliate link to buy one. Hope I can make it sound as good as you did! 😁
Is the pickguard close enough to the Fender Jazzmaster shape and layout that you could swap it out with a standard one?
From Leo: No, not even close. The body is also not routed for the upper controls used on a real Jazzmaster. and the selector switch layout is different.
Damn. I want this!
Do you have a Jaguar or Jazzmaster to compare it to? I am wondering if the pickguard from a Jaguar would line up since the bodies are apparently identical
