If you compare the pitstops you also have to include the 5,6s pitstop of George Russell. Because of that, Lando came in front. So a lil bit of pitstop luck

The 6 turn, nearly 2 sector, battle between George and Lando was worth 3 stars all by itself.

The problem is that everyone wants to vote for the underdog. Lando might have been the fastest, but he's not the three-time world champion. So in people's minds, even if Max drove better, Lando is the "challenger" who by even threatening Max at all deserves to be driver of the day because he's the one making F1 interesting right now, taking the fight to Max.
I'm not saying it's right, but I don't think it's blind fanboyism. 2023 being so dominant really didn't help either so people just kinda think "Max in P1, business as usual" and don't really care how he got there or how impressive his drive actually was.
Driver of the day means less than nothing. It's just some add on to give the "social media" people something to shout about

Also, I don’t think Lewis is referring to being sabotaged, so the fans need to calm down. I think he is stating the obvious, as he is leaving the team, the team will not be developing the car around him as much any more and more around Russell, hence why Lewis thinks Russell will now have the upperhand. People need to apply logic, but sadly for many fans that does not exist.

Apparently it's coming from somewhere outside the team and the police are involved. As Toto put it (paraphrasing obviously), there would be no benefit to the team to hobble one of the drivers, they're both needed to score high points.
Problem is that Lewis has done statements like "the new parts are not on my car" and later we found out he was given the option but he didn't want the new parts because if he damaged them he wouldn't have a spare.
And those kinds of narratives where he's is implicitly saying the team is favoring Russel, while he chose it himself, isn't going to help the TeamLH bandwagon see logic.
The beauty of this situation is that we do not need to speculate at all 😊. Lewis Hamilton does not need to talk 🤐. George Russell does not need to talk 🤫. Toto Wolff does not need to talk 👄🚫. . .
First qualifying session next year, we'll see what's up 🧐.
I had no idea of these conspiracies with LH lol My favourite driver but I just genuinely believed he was just on a bad run of being in poor form. Nothing more nothing less.
From what I interpreted from Lewis's quali comments were that Merc weren't going to follow his advice on which way to develop the car. Which makes sense given that he's out of the team. So the car will become more and more suited to George, as he's the team's future. And it's 100% the right thing to do.
But a small portion of delusional vocal Lewis fans took the statement severely out of the context and spun a conspiracy theory with it.
It's similar to Alonso Lewis in, 2007, when Alonso fans were screaming sabotage. If you have a big enough fan base, there will be a few bad eggs that make the entire fanbase seem like biased idiots.

19:50 I don't think Mercedes is sabotaging Lewis but rather shifting focus to Russell when it comes to future development on the car. Russell is the future. Remember what Albon said about the Redbull and Max, "Max likes a pointy car and you just have to follow and get used to that". Essentially they are bringing updates based on data and feedback of the number 1 driver.

Before watching, I checked the thumbnail's question and then went back to check the 2021, 2020, 2019 and 2018 Spanish Grands Prix ... and I have to respond: "Nothing that didn't happen to Ricciardo, Gasly and Albon to an equal or lesser degree."
The thing is, Red Bull is a car capable of winning both championships. Back then, they were 3rd most of the time and could never challenge for championships.
Now they should win both but probably won’t because of Perez.
Perez is underperforming.
Max and Daniel were very close in 2018. Daniel had a ton of bad reliability luck in races and a handful of poor team decisions in quali that hurt him.
Now, Max is clearly the better driver, but the team did not lose out on points often because of poor performance by Daniel like they have with Sergio.
Love Perez and was excited to see him land that seat for 2021, but there is no reason they should have given him a 2 year extension.
There is barely a reason to keep him til the end of the season right now.
Why is everyone saying Norris had tyre advantage on softs at the end. Max pitted for a brand new set and 3 laps later Norris pitted for a scrubbed set with 3 laps life in them. They literally had the same age of tyres at the end

For this race Perez is finishing that much behind Max is not surprising, he started P11 and finished P8. In Spain you lose so much time and tire life overtaking. Oscar started P10 and finished P7 in a car that was arguably quicker this weekend.
Oscar finished 30 seconds ahead of Pérez and he almost caught Sainz

Pérez also had a 3-stop race and all his soft tyres were used, nothing fresh left. bad (slow) pitstops also cost him time. He/we/they will have wanted more from him but I'm not sure if it was possible considering everything. at least he broke the spell of early elimination in Q and the spell of dnf via crash.. oh well, just wanting to stay hopeful and optimistic.
9th fastest car with nowhere near enough load, old rear wing, etc but daniel ricciardo managed to overtake 3 cars and in the end became the only driver with negative tyre degradation, that too on two different compounds. drivers can do it if they put effort into it like oscar piastri managed his tyres well when it's been one of his biggest criticisms

This race was specifically ruled that if you take that outside path, it will not be considered leaving the track and gaining an advantage even if you overtake someone.
Lol people just don't want to call it as it is because it'll make Lando look "bad" but McLaren has had the fastest car over the last few races, Lando simply just makes too many mistakes, the ONLY reason why the RB is still winning is because of Max. Any other "top tier" driver driving that car and that RB may consistently finish 3rd or 4th and occasionally win. It's not as bad as Perez makes it seem but it's not nearly as good as Max is making it seem. Without Max it would be extremely clear that McLaren is the fastest car right now.
Ye if rb where not that much better the year before people would call max the goat of f1 for having pretty much the second at best car and still leading by that much. Lando gets out qualified so many times by over 0.2 sec even tho piastri isn't the best qualifier he can easily handle lando most of the time showing how much lando is missing out.

It's also funny how he never get penalized for clear incidents because F1 wants him to desperately win and challenge Max for the championship.
1. Jump start in Jeddah - Not called cause "sensor" wasn't working. Slam dunk penalty case to anyone with working eyeballs.
2. Cuts 1st corner in Canada, forcing Russell who was ahead of him off the racing line, making Russell lose 1.5s and closing the gap to him at the same time - No investigation.
3. Forces Max completely off the track like he isn't even there at the start of the race in Spain - No investigation.

The Canada incident literally got investigated but they didnt penalise Norris bcs he didnt gain any lasting advantage from it.

Sainz literally overtook off track in Spain, yet he didnt get a penalty, Alonso got 3 penalty points for ruining his Chinese Sprint, yet Carlos got 1 for ruining Piastri's race in Miami.
Max LITERALLY raced so obviously dirty in the final three rounds of 2021, yet they did not penalise all of his incidents, only some.
They have always been like this, idk why people act like the swedish FIA are somehow either anti-Max or British bias, they have the same inconsistency for the entire grid. Magnussen is a ley example of that, he has done so much shit and they arent giving him penalty points anymore bcs they dont want to give him a race ban...

Leclerc hit Sainz forcing him off the track, and Sainz then followed the correct rejoin procedure, which is why he kept the position.

Plz watch the race, when Carlos bumped in Charles, Charles was steering towards right side to avoid bumping into Carlos, 55 bumped, damaged charles FW, he ran wide n rejoined the race, if that was with someone else that was a slam dunked penalty. Ferrari is being Ferrari in not being assertive

From what I remember, 3 times McLaren strat team has asked Lando what the strategy should be and all three times it hasn’t panned out the best way. Last time in Canada, yesterday in Spain and the all famous Russian GP

This time it was not the strategy. My opinion is it was the right strategy this time. Maybe couldve pitted 2laps earlier on the first stint. But that start worked out for them.

Max had old tires at the start and Lando had new. That start was the difference
The thing is there's a team difference also in this equation. Red Bull are very assertive in their decisions, and they're made almost esclusively by the pit wall. McLaren are always asking Lando what he thinks, and he doesn't see the whole picture of the race. Red Bull strategy team are more professional.

I think George should get points in driver ratings for his amazing overtake at the start and the multi turn battle he had with Lando. George is a master of entertainment.

i think the 'Driver of the day award' is also more of an opportunity for us fans to get more moment of the driver we want to hear from.

It would be a legal nightmare for a team to sabotage a driver. Teams have shareholders/investors, and as companies they have a legal obligation to maximize profits for their shareholders/investors. If they sabotage a driver and lose prize money in the constructor's championship, they would 100% be sued to hell.
Best they could do is favor one over the other. Realistically stone information on development might be withheld from Hamilton but not likely with nefarious intent.
Toto pointed out that they want both drivers getting the most points possible for the sake of the team. It's all BS!

Barrichello, Massa, Bottas and Perez were also sabotaged quite frequently. Team orders to hand over wins are clear cut sabotage.
And yet its happened in the past and surely in the future. F1 has a notorious history of unsavoury goings on. Is what it is.
It’s not really a legal nightmare for the team. At least from the fiduciary POV you reference. Dubious actions made by teams is something that has happened in the past. Never has it been handled as a fiduciary breach at least in this sense. It’s far fetched as an argument, and it can be reasonably be argued that their actions were focused on long term value with a short term cost, whether successful or not. Employees may lose their jobs. Drivers might have some employment related claim (imo dubious but I’ve read some opinions where EU law might consider a case)
The big liability for a team would be if the FIA determines that the team is in breach of the regulations and penalized the team, and bans/fines the team or personnel for a period of time. Both of which have happened. It hasn’t happened because the team play favourites.
Teams could also be in hot water with sponsors if there’s any sort of morality clauses designed to protect the brands that sponsor them.
The other factor, most or all of these teams are not publicly traded. They have a handful of shareholders. Which can include public corps, but they are still private corps, with only a few shareholders to represent. And a parent company is a shareholder. Not a fiduciary. At worst it’s an underperforming asset. But it still probably fell within their operating requirements. It still made money, just not as much. Or it provided non cash value. I.e marketing value.
Georges move on the outside of t1 on the start was nutty he did it so well. Just snuck by max and lando.

McLaren had a much faster car, according to himself. Max is just brilliant. You can't defeat Max in just a better car, you need a much better car than Max to defeat him
@@Amory98 That isn't really true... This race could have very easily proved that statement wrong had lando not been behind George for 5 laps and had better pit stops. He finished 2.5 seconds from max and was held back for a solid 4 seconds

@@Eric-rf1is Mate the logic is fine, if you re read what I said you would notice I didn't say he would have 100% beaten max, it is a what if statement... I said it could have easily been proven wrong meaning it was possible... My point was Lando would have and did have pace to catch and rival that of Max given the gap wasn't extended, kinda clear.....Obvious Max was preserving tires but that isn't relevant as my 'what if' statement is reducing the gap by a few seconds meaning he would have had to push a fair amount.. Not hard.
You missed the elephant in the room. Lando couldn't pass lowly Russell early in the race. Max passed Russel easily.
Because, for the 100th time, McLaren do not have the pace earlier in stints on heavy fuel. This has been the case every single weekend lol
The McLaren seems to struggle more in dirty air than the Red Bull, but Perez says he was cooking his tires in dirty air as well.
That said, Perez still made up 3 places whereas Piastri only made up 2 places relative to their respective starts despite Perez’s strategy being inferior to Piastri’s.
Credit to Piastri, though, he’d still have a lead on Perez even if Perez hadn’t run a three-stopper.
Russell had a slipstream from Max that helped along the straight even though Russell did not have DRS.
The Red Bull is still the best car.

Is this not exactly what we have seen since Gasly was there? I don't think Perez, Gasly, or Albon was bad: rather the car is not as good as Max makes it look.
@@SuperPassionflowerBased on free practice, the current RB loses a lot of front downforce during the corners causing a lot of understeer on exit. To resolve this, RB will be needing to put a lot of front wing on the car making it very oversteer-y. Checo obviously isn’t liking this so either his setup is similar to Max, or he’s dialling out the front wing which is making it just understeer throughout the corner and unable to rotate through the corners, losing Checo massive time.
@@cg_2k72 yes exactly the problem that has its effect and affect on Checo's performance and that make it quite a struggle to find the best balance to suit him better. makes good sense how you describe it. Max and Checo are so different in their driving style and preferences. All those comments made all over saying Checo is crap etc etc, that's total rubbish and undeserved. He's a good driver capable of doing amazing things, but where Max had a love-relation with RB19 and to a lesser degree with RB20 now it shows issues... Checo has had a struggling "relationship" with the cars.
The amount of Checo copium is crazy. He has barely deserved that seat since he joined. He got the seat cus of $$$ and has kept it because of it too. All this cry-babyness about the car being the 'problem' just does not stand anymore, and hasn't for over 2 years.
You should know Race Director's Notes allow using *the escape at turn 1 that Sainz used* as long as you rejoin to the left of the bullard without penalty

I heard them say in the broadcast that if a driver correctly took the runoff section and correctly joined the track, it was acceptable and not gaining a place while leaving the track. 31:26
Correct. It seemed odd, but I guess the race director had assessed that it wasn't an advantage to go out there. Maybe between the kerb and it being dirty that there was no time savings and a risky purposeful maneuver.
What everyone should remember at the end of race talks with the drivers, let alone the radio calls in-race, is that despite years of experience (including as far back as karting), they're all still hyped up with adrenaline. It takes a fair time for it all to go away. They may not even admit it to themselves, but I've been watching F1 and countless other forms of 2 & 4-wheel racing for over 50 years, and I can spot a still-buzzing driver a mile away. This is why I don't take any bitching too seriously at that point.
Also it doesn't help driver relationships when the media (I'm talking about the big names that the drivers are likely to pay attention to) pick up tiny things and blow them all out of proportion, and then keep on at them at every opportunity. I'd rather see the clean, fun competition on the track that I'm sure the drivers would prefer.
Checo is failing purely based on what Albon said about RB's this time of the year - the car is on the sharpest of knife edges as they've developed the car by mid year, and checo cant adapt. Every single driver at RB except Ricciardo had the same isssue every year
I think that if Red Bull had done George's strategy, he would have gotten second yesterday. His tyres were fine (as per his radio) and they still pitted him for hards. And then the slow pitstops on top of that...
It seems they had agreed on the tyre strategy before the race and then didn't want to be flexible when he made that move

Regarding the Sainz overtake from OB: According to the Sky Broadcast the Stewards direction this weekend was that as long as you took the run off and went around the bollard it didn't matter if you overtook someone, because it was considered a longer distance. So, that's why there was no penalty.

I think re: Perez it might be something along the lines of what Albon has said in a few interviews: that Max asks for upgrades in the car that suit is driving style and the team just goes along with that without regard for the teammate. Maybe the initial car suits both equally and then is made more in line with Max’s style to the detriment of Checo. If there isn’t a genuine car-related reason then actually wtf is going on

Lando had NO choice but to back out of the sandwich the 63 had put him in. It was an excellent 19 point saving decision.😇
Carlos is a very talented driver, but it sure feels like he's become quite the complainer whenever he gets into it with someone and it doesn't go his way. His complaint about Hamilton "bumping" him was just a milder version of his complaint about Piastri supposedly illegally overtaking him earlier in the season (I forget which race) and trying to negotiate by effectively saying "just give me the place back and I won't get you in trouble." It's a somewhat classless stain that Sainz can really do without. It certainly doesn't endear him to me.

It wasn't Piastri overtaking him, it was him overtaking Piastri at Miami where he took a penalty for the exact same crime.
Either just slag Sainz off or get your facts right, but at least choose one.
Now just go back to last year Spanish GP. Lap 56 like almost EXACTLY same situation happened between Yuki and Zhou even the same corner only difference is that Zhou took escape route so they wont collide and Sainz didnt and they collide and Yuki got penalty for it but Lewis didnt. If they want to be consistent then Lewis should get penalty same as Yuki did.
@@marekbuhla6729 learn the rules, Hamilton's tyre was beside the seat position of Carlos, that means now you have to leave space for the driver behind, Carlos didn't and hit Hamilton. Carlos had the space, there was loads of it,but he chose to squeeze Hamilton and the stewards followed the rules and didn't give out a penalty. Again, read the rules.
Most drivers do that tho. To try and make the stewards decision be towards their side
People are on Perez for not being able to pass. But Lando and Russell situation proves it was difficult to pass.
We had a large number of overtakes, but that’s because we had unequal cars and unequal strategies. If cars were fairly equal, it WAS tough to pass.

Off topic BUT I think fastest pitstop during the race should go for 1 constructors point. It would be an incentive for lower teams to get points and it makes pitstops even more fun/exciting.
Just an award at the end of the year feels like an injustice to the pit crew 🤷♀
They just altered the rules last seasons to slow down the pitstops for 'safety' reasons.
Adding an incentive to speed it up again for some 'non-race related' point seems a bit counterproductive.

The mechanics can't start moving their tools before the car is fully stopped or something like that.
Before Red Bull was doing 1,96 sec pitstops and Mercedes claimed it was 'unsafe' ...and FIA suddenly dropped a new rule in order to slow the pitstops down.
The maximum drive thru speeds alter every race because some tracks have very crowded or small pitlanes and others have wide and roomy pitlanes. And those rules have been around for a while.
So the pitstops are about a second slower since...
but that could just have a backmarker team like sauber just keep doing pitstops because they're not getting anywhere in the race, and they'll get points for nothing
and pit crew is as much involved in a win or a loss as the drivers or the engineers or the mechanics. so their reward for good pitstop is their driver winning or getting points, or undercutting another for a better position etc.
Just want to point out something about DOTD. A few people use it to boost their fantasy teams. I always give Lando the 2x DRS because there is a good chance he will win it and that's a solid 20 points for me.

Checo's problem: Adaptability. It's his main issue, no doubt. When the car had been upgraded a little bit, the characteristics of the car would change a little bit and he can't adapt it. Easy. In his previous experience, he stayed in the mid field team and they didn't often upgrade the car. Also, he dnf too much and made a huge loss under budget cap. He can't take more risk to push the car.
Tbh, if lando pitted a lap after Russell, then he would've made an overcut because merc did a +5 seconds pit stop (also undercutting max).
Is hamilton being sabotaged - no. Has Mercedes focus changed given that Lewis is leaving - possibly. And Prezez I suspect its a similar situation. Perez had some bad races a couple of years ago so red bull, knowing that Max is going to destroy everyone, are focusing more on Max because its virtually guaranteed max points. The unfortunate downside is it makes Perez look worse.

mclaren have had the fastest car for like 4 races already. i really think that driver of the day shouldnt be given to those on the podium. dotd is suppose to lift out a driver that did well but isnt in the spotlight. those on the podium got their reward, its the podium they got.
To weigh in on the Perez situation, he did not start the year well, he was 4 seconds ahead of Sainz, whilst Max was 22 seconds out in the lead. Jeddah was ok but was only 9 secs ahead of Leclerc. Australia was the first major warning. Max was pulling away from sainz with an effective handbrake before he dnfed whilst perez finished in 5th waaaaaay off the lead, and mind you, the redbull was still the clear fastest car at the time. To make it worse, he says max wouldnt have won even without his issue, which let's be honest is not true in the slightest. His only good race of the year was suzuka where he actually managed to qualify close to max, but after that in china, Max pulled 1.5 secs per lap in the lead in 3 different stints (sprint, 1st stint and final stint of the main race) whilst checo finished 3rd in both races behind a merc which was a tractor and a mclaren which still hadnt gotten its major upgrade. Miami, he nearly takes max out in turn 1 and since then hes just spiralling out of control. The only possible reason he got an extension is because apparently redbull make more from his sponsorships than they would from from winning the constructors vs 3rd or 4th, which is wild. Plus with every team catching up, a little extra wind tunnel time wouldnt hurt ig.

yeah cuz he had a 7 second pit stop and had to push to defend way earlier than he should have he lost 6 seconds in pits today after that first pit if he had a normal pit he would have been right behind max on warm tires

For everyone yelling about Russell's tire management, here's what actually happened. Tires were fine, Hamilton was about 0.05 - 0.1s faster on equal mediums, Russell lost \~4 seconds on the slow stop, and the team just chose to go to plan B with Russell because of that.

In terms of the Perez fall off thing all it is is that the car is not as dominant as it was early on in the season (e.g. Bahrain) so now we're seeing how he stacks up with a car that is relatively in line with other teams.
I dont think the McLaren are the fastest car. And I dont think they "should've" won.
But they are pretty much equal with Red Bull (and better in cooler conditions), so I think they very much COULD have won, but I dont think they SHOULD have bcs at the end if the day it was Lando driving a car to its limit, and Max driving his car to its limit. They both did fantastic and both deserve full credit.

He didnt need to push as hard and was able to be careful. Lando NEVER let up JUST in case Max slipped up.. If Lando would have been closer, Max would've picked up the pace..

Regarding Perez. Last year and this year as well, the competition got closer with the first few upgrades. Difference now is, while last year they simply closed the gap a bit, this year McLaren at the least have overtaken RedBull. This screws Perez massively who can't outdrive the car like Verstappen is doing, so he looks much MUCH worse.
As the most privileged driver ever, Lewis is unrivaled at playing the victim.
WIth the sainz Hamilton situation they did touch and there was some carbon send flying.
Albon explained in an interview exactly why Max's teammates get worse over the year. They keep tuning the car more and more to his preferences that makes it harder and harder for a driver to keep up with if they aren't on the same level as him, which noone is.

No. It isn't that they tune the car to Max's preferences. Newey explained in an interview that the engineers try to build the car that will go the fastest and introduce upgrades that will add more pace. Which generally makes the car more pointy as Alex Albon explained in that interview. And he also said that Max Verstappen has an unnatural ability to drag pointy cars around a race track that most other drivers will struggle with. The more stable the car, the slower it is and vice versa.
Drivers like Senna, Michael, Max and others have the ability to drive unstable cars that can go fast if they are able to handle them, while other not as great drivers can't and require the rear ends to be more stable, thereby compromising performance and speed.

They try to build the fastest cars that become more and more difficult to drive and Verstappen has the ability to adjust but his teammates can't as the season progresses and more upgrades come in.
