You are doing great but the pigs need more of a shelter. They need a small enclosure without holes in it. Maybe you could temporarily build a small enclosure in your big barn. They need hay to burrow in to keep warm on cold days and nights. Thank you for sharing your journey.
We built a really nice goat house with pallets but we put a tin roof, door etc. So it's closed up except for the door big enough for them to walk in. The pallets my husband can get at work are incredibly nice. They are actually made with boards like decking and they're huge. The house is about 5ft tall. He can also get boards that are thinner and the perfect width to cover the cracks in the pallets. We've actually used them to make raised garden beds, a hay feeder and a covering for the minerals for the goats. All completely free!😁😆 I've seen people on FB marketplace trying to sell very simple 3 sided shelters for goats for $350! We could make a killing but the house is so sturdy it would be impossible to move. Sorry for the long comment!
While you are still learning about your animals, a vet visit can be so helpful for your animal and learn some valuable information going forward. So happy he is doing better!
Having farm animals is like having kids...They get sick , that's why you should always have a quarantine pen you take the chance of the rest of them catching it. Change in weather is usually when they can get sick the most. Straw for bedding is the worst cuz it gets damp and holds bacteria they should be on pine shavings and in a barn or a shelter that has like a dog house opening, calf huts work really good. And you should have a halter on that bull calf already. I mean all of this in the nicest way, I'm not criticizing , I am not scolding , I've been on a farm my whole life the older that calf gets without being properly handled is going to be coming back at you in just a few months
We have goats and for them it's recommended to use straw for the bedding in winter because it keeps them warmer. And you use a layering method instead of cleaning it all out and starting over. It keeps them further from the ground and parasites aren't a problem in winter. We use shavings during other seasons though.
@@kimberlyearly8918 yes agreed goats can do very well with straw,as do some other farm animals, we always do shavings with pigs and chickens less dust and respiratory issues 🙂
@@janetschie5835 My daughter has chickens and she uses shavings. I'd rather use them. I like them better than straw.
Seems the cows are “dogs” to them. Never seen anything like it in my life.
Carefulness and caution when a farm animal falls sick. One can turn into multiple sick quickly.! Think about establishing a good relationship with a vet that does farm visits. Some illnesses can pass to small children and pets just by contact. Ringworm, flu swine and bird, even farm animals vaccine routines. Farm life is busy but has amazing rewards!
I can't believe how grown and smart Cassidy has gotten!!!! What a beauty!!
My prayers for the sweet pig don't take this the wrong way but please pray about it you guy's are in over your head 3 kids and all these animals you can't keep up you are struggling! Your animals need proper shelter I hope the best for you all but from what I see and I have been here from day one you are making life do hard for yourself and the family I wish you the best and praying for you 🙏 God does not want his followers to suffer!
You'all need a proper shelter for these animals in winter. Baby calf, pigs, cow all need more than a tarp slung over a fence. Time to build a barn!
They have a barn.
@@heehaw8401 yes, and they don't use it to shelter the animals in their care.
I don’t understand that at all.
@@heehaw8401 lots I don't understand but realize these people are not farmers and she is trying to turn nursing knowledge into being her own vet. All for views.
I'm a nurse and I also grew up on a farm. My father did a lot of his 'vet' work himself, but he also had a diploma in animal husbandry. He did his own IVs and antibiotics (when necessary to save a life). The current vogue of no antibiotics, even when an animal is near death is just foolhardy.
Do you all have a farm vet that comes to the farm? When the animals are this sick they need to see a vet and get the appropriate medication. It would save the animal a lot of unnecessary stress and you all a lot of unnecessary stress.
The pig definitely should have received antibiotic shot with first high temperature. Not good to wait & see with animals.
The problem is that a farm call is very expensive. We live 2 miles from our vet and the cost is $150. For the vet to show up at the farm. That isn’t to look at an animal or anything.
Animals sometimes require seeing a vet. Large animal vets many times have to come to the farm, if you can’t afford vet bills for large animals you shouldn’t have them.
@@theelusive11 responsible pet owners take on the financial burden ,you want animals you pay for that. I just spent 1400$for a tumor removal for my 11yr old dog who has terminal cancer. Wasn't an ideal situation but I agreed when I got an animal to take care of it's well being that includes all medical bills. I did what was right for my animal
Well she apparently talked to the vet who told her it was probably viral and that the antibiotic likely wouldn’t help. She had the antibiotic, she just didn’t want to give it to him. If it was me, Idc if we know or not, I’m giving it to him asap because if it is bacterial the sooner you start it the better. Also not sure why the sick pig was kept w the other bigs. Bacterial or viral, the other pigs can catch it.
Do you guys know what you are doing? Get a shelter/barn before winter!!! First thing! Would you sleep outside in the winter?
Not these two. They just race at a million miles an hour and jump in with both feet no thinking or planning.
Glad to hear piggy is better. Baby calf is adorable running and jumping around. God Bless your beautiful family.
So happy that Freddie is okay!! Little Cassidy talking just melts my heart!!!!
Did you consult vet regarding pig illness? Should you quarantine from other pigs? I know essential oils are great for humans but pigs? Why don't you get a vet to come there?? I don't understand.
@Janet Robichaud obviously they consulted with a vet since they got an antibiotic.
@@dearleah7116 a proper vet will always want to see an animal. No proper vet will give a diagnoses over a phone
@@alimay1807 I agree. I haven’t watched this family in a long time because Alex loves to be the center of attention. She loves the camera way too much.
They both seem to be ignoring the children. I heard one of them saying mama over and over again. It’s not safe to let the girls run free unsupervised on the property.
Should have had proper housing and shelter in place before that animals ever came.
@Claudia Rinehart well since you're not satisfied with how they're doing things, why don't you go put up proper housing and shelter for them.
Happy to hear Freddie made it through and is feeling great.
Ya'll are truly the best. You're such an inspiration to me I don't deal with infertility but I've dealt with some pretty hard stuff and you guys have helped me through a lot of it. Thank you for your playlist off spotify it is a blessing more than you'll ever know. May God bless you richly
I am glad your pig made it and I understand your ideology about being holistic. But this is one thing I have notices over the last 30 years with the crunchy-granola and holistic crowd - many wait too late to utilize the tools - like pharmaceuticals and modern medicine. I am guilty of this myself - and let me say, I have regret. Also you need to read up on what "antibiotic" free actually means. There is a huge difference in giving animals medication when warranted and needed and prophylacticly.
YES!!! “Antibiotic free” does not mean to never treat the animal when they are sick 🤦🏼♀️
Yes exactly. I thought that was a strange thing to say
Omg how scary! Ik the comments might eat me up for saying this butttt, please invest in a proper barn for the pigs and cows. Your choice to "homestead off grid" shouldn't mean compromising their life, safety,or comfort. Winter won't be promising....
Farm animals have to have the proper shelter, you’re correct. ❤️
Farm animals survive with lots less. He probably caught something that is around.
@@marciatroesch6556 We’re just talking about shelter and upcoming winter, which in Tennessee can be brutal. That’s it. Nothing about the pigs illness. 🙄🙄🙄🙄
I agree. Farm animals need space, a decent barn and plenty room to roam . They have plenty of land they need to use it. A deck is not a proper shelter for anything.
I am reminded of the "horse before the cart"...we always had a shelter/barn ready for the animal before they came home. And we're proactive treating them with prebiotic/probiotics against shipping fever/pneumonia.
Praying for their animals. Praying for the family's safety on their journey with animals.
This is why we don’t treat illnesses with essential oils and shoving garlic into places garlic shouldn’t be.
@Kristina Nyholm if you think you can do better, by all means, go do better. Doubt you'd do better than them.
That pig needs a vet and meds. Not essential oils. Yikes. And when an animal gets sick like this and you have no idea why, the first thing you always do is quarantine them from the other animals. I know you all are learning but I really hope it’s not at the expense of these animals.
👏👏👏
100% agree
They did contact a vet and gave him meds.
@@breabeyrouti7834 they waited it out for meds , could have been under control sooner. they got lucky he didn't die. Those meds should have been given sooner
Essential oils…Dear Jesus. A farmer would laugh his rear end off at that.
I feel bad that the animals don’t have a barn to go into to seek shelter. It was rough watching this poor pig suffer and using peppermint oil instead of having a vet come do a full exam. Give those animals a barn and bedding and food troughs. 😢I would never buy an animal without first making sure I had all of the appropriate accommodations for them.
Pigs don’t need barns to live happy lives.
@@Starry_Night_Homestead they may not need a barn, but they need adequate shelter. Something to protect them once frigid cold hits, but also to protect against harsh winds/storms.
People comment who clearly don’t have farm animals lmao
@@shannonjdobson not sure which way that comment is directed. But as someone who lives in and grew up in a large farming community, I’ve only ever seen one farm wo shelter for their animals. This farm was shut down due to neglect. Several of the animals died during a brutal winter.
Ours has shelter, straw, and a heat lamp🤷🏻♀️
Happy for the little guy. You are great animal advocates. I know you all love your precious animals!! God Bless
You are going to turn around and it will be winter. You need to build a barn and shelters for all the animals now. Not later, now. It takes time. Build good quality shelters. Glad your pig recovered. Go visit The Gentle Barn of Tennessee! They know about farm animals.
So happy piggy made it through!!!
Why would you not give him the medicine straight away! Poor thing

I have a massively swollen and sore lymph node that I'm trying to get to drain after having strep throat at our house. I'd love your chunchy tips for it! So glad your pig is doing better!
Chiropractor. Look up drainage tone or lymph tone homeopathic drops. Lymphatic drainage videos on RUclips to do yourself. Iodine ointment on the lymph nodes.
Go to the doctor!
@@clouseau1kailie already went to the doctor for the strep and got antibiotics. The lymph node still will not go down. I'm not going to pay for yet another doctors visit and risk getting sick again by going there for them to tell me there's nothing they can do to fix a swollen lymph node. Thanks anyway though
I wish the antibiotics were given sooner. 😔 The poor 😢 🐖 Pigs fever was 103 for way too long. I had friends who had 🚜 farms. They would have given meds sooner, to prevent 108 🤒 fever from happening. I am sorry your pig was sick. However, I would have given meds sooner.
101-103 is normal for a pig
Pigs loveeeeee to wollow!! It helps them cool down when they get hot and it helps keep their skin from burning! I’d make a wollow for them! They love love love them! The pigs where I work are always in a wollow! I hope little man pulls through!!!!
Please listen to the comments about a good shelter and a good vet. I lived on a small farm all my life and I never let an animal suffer. I even took one of our chickens in for foot surgery.Treat the animals as if they are your children and you wont go wrong. You would take a child to a DR if they struggled like that pig did right? Sorry I think I need to unsub until you can get it together.
Fyi the standard temperature is measured at 5ft off of the ground. As a result the temp on the ground very well is colder than the temp on the news. Food for thought
Eustachian tube stroke for congestion. Your tapping reminded me of the maneuver that I use for head congestion. Hold your breath and stroke the path of the tube behind the ear lobe or the anterior SCM "cleft" to the collar bones. Swallow, then you can breath. It's a sort of vacuum effect I think. Modify depth and speed so it works for you. Bilaterally helps me well when I'm really congested. As a CLT just a soft gentle reminder; lymphatic are very close to the skin so treat them gently 😊
So glad Freddie is doing better you got this Alex ❤😊
I don’t know much about farming, admittedly. What I do know comes from spending summers as a kid at my grandpas farm. But, don’t you guys get pretty decent winters there? Should the pigs/cows/chickens have an enclosed shelter, like a leakproof barn for not just the cold, but storms? I don’t think it would have to be a huge barn w the numbers you have, but maybe something to look into (and to film for future videos??) As soon as possible, before temps drop.
Winters are cold in Tennessee. Frigid.
They have a barn but don't want to use it.🤔
@@kimberlyearly8918 No they don’t.

I would have to get a vet .....
They did talk to a vet and I see animals all the time with no shelter they are doing good that how they got the meds and they do have shelters and canopy’s can be made like the have
The vet prescribed the antibiotic, but also told her it was probably viral and the antibiotic wouldn’t help. So then Alex hesitated too long to give it to him.
@Rae Knock did you not watch the video? They did get a vet.
@@KariN-or3sc if the vet said they probably wouldn't help then why would Alex just go ahead and give the pig antibiotics? Antibiotics are not good for people or animals.
When milking, you might try a loose hobble tie for either 1 or both rear feet, so she learns not to kick. Then, you are able to milk her out without worrying about her knocking the pail over. It would create less stress on you and momma. After a bit, you won't have to use it at all or just little occasional reminders.
Hey you all, sorry to hear, sending healing and comforting prayers.
On another note, you guys need an udderly ez cow milker. It’s is so much more comfortable to her that stripping her every time. It’s quicker and it will definitely save on your back also the girls can get involved to help. Just so many good things about it!
Why if you have purchased animals you don't have property enclosures? The pig pen looks like you slapped together some junk from the yard
Renae you are so beautiful and you’re better than trying to put others down.
@@PhilandAlex, it was certainly poorly phrased and I can appreciate your response. I commend the vulnerability it takes to welcome viewers into a new phase of your lives, particularly one entered into with largely no experience. But, the salient point in her comment, to me, was not at all misguided. You can see it echoed in many other comments as well - not having the proper infrastructure (including a vet) for animals before bringing them into your environment puts them at risk and could at best be viewed as poor planning and at worst as negligence. I wish you luck as you work to create long term solutions.

In B.C., we didn't have rain for 3 months- just started again this week!
I wouldn't worry so much about him being Sterile. Just let him live, give him the Antibiotics!!!!!!
The sterility comes from having a fever, not the meds. She was hesitant to give meds because she was taking a “holistic” approach and putting freaking essential oils on the pig. The vet also told her if it was viral the antibiotic wouldn’t work. Which may be true, but that doesn’t mean you wait until the pig almost dies to give the antibiotic. The antibiotic has almost zero risk to the pig, esp when compared to whatever illness he had. This video infuriated me.
@Linda Pulizzi you weren't there so you don't know what's best.
We raised some turkeys and let me say. They shipped us 20 of those babies and not one died. I just got to we’re I would bring it in the house a nurse it back to health. I got goats in April and when they were a few months old one of them got diarrhea and it absolutely terrified me. All I knew was that goats can go downhill pretty fast. I was so scared I asked my husband if he could check on her before he went to work so I wouldn't have to be the one to find. I dreamed all night that she died! I got up and saw her on top of their house and I let out the biggest breath. I know it's a lot less severe than the pig but at the time I was just as worried.
My little potbelly pig lived in our house and had his own little doggie bed.
What does pepperminy oil on the spine do? Is there science behind that? Never heard of it.

Have you guys heard of Q fever? Not sure how much the USA gets Q fever but in Australia everyone who works with pigs is highly recommended to get vaxinated. Also it can affect cows apparently. Are you guys vaxinated against Q fever?
They’ve obviously been in contact with a vet or they wouldn’t have the antibiotics available, right? And they mentioned they quarantined him. Do you guys not watch the whole video?
Well here’s the thing….we did. And what what we saw, was that Alex had the antibiotics but didn’t want to give it to him. She was taking a “holistic” approach and putting freaking essential oils on a pig who was dangerously Ill. Secondly, they may have said they quarantined him, but he wasn’t quarantined in the video. They showed him in the pen w the others throughout the video. So while they may hv Quarantined him briefly and I missed it, they did not quarantine him for the duration of the illness and eventual treatment.
