I saw BYD buses here in Alberta, Canada several years ago. They apparently performed very well in our cold climate on short to medium length runs. Eventually, it was decided to purchase a fleet of EV buses from a US company that were complete trash. The company soon went out of business and the buses are collecting dust. It is quite likely that they were purchased due to US political pressure.
This is the main problem for wide adoption in Canada... distance. The SYD U9 would barely get me to the closest actual city at 225 KM away. Canada has a very robust car manufacturing, design, and parts industry that can be heavily subsidized. As a Canadian I welcome BYD because the car industry in North America has been gouging and needs some competition to kick them in the ass.
Agreed! I don’t mind supporting made in America but not by being forced to spend 70k on a car. I’m still waiting on a 300 mile $25k EV and if they don’t deliver, I’ll just buy another Honda/foreign ICE vehicle.
Canadian here...and I'm tired of price gouging on pickups. A half-ton truck that used to cost us $45k just 5 short years ago, now starts at $75k. HD models that used to top out around $80k, but now start around $90k. The Chevy Bolt is one of the cheapest EVs, and it starts at $38k...for a subcompact car. The Blazer EV is $65k+, and the base Silverado EV 1WT starts at $80k at the dealerships that I've checked. Even with a 100% tariff, it would be cheaper to buy from a company like BYD. We've spent billions of tax dollars to prop up automakers and protect jobs, only to have them lay off those workers, and give their execs bonuses with the bailout money. It's time for those companies to pay the piper for not keeping up their end of the bargain at the expense of their workforce, who are also taxpayers, and the rest of Canadians who are being price gouged at every turn when they need reliable and affordable transportation. Maybe BYD can set up shop here and create good paying jobs for those who lost theirs at the hands of North American automakers. As a pro-labor guy, I would welcome BYD opening up facilities here to build and assemble. Canadians get much needed competition in the auto sector to usher in affordability, and new job opportunities open up for people who were abandoned by, or find themselves forced to stay at, current companies. The companies like to blame labor for the need to jack prices, but the record profits year over year tell a very different story. Those workers are the backbone of those companies, and are not being treated and compensated properly. Perhaps BYD can force them to take care of their workforce at the risk of losing top talent to them. When workers win, the economy wins. When people can afford reliable vehicles, they will buy them. Everyone's tired of the poor value for dollar and awful reliability of domestic vehicles due to poor design and engineering. It's not the assembly work in question, it's the cost cutting in design that creates inherent flaws in components. So yeah, bring on BYD, Geely, and anyone else who will put foot to ass on vehicle prices and quality here. I'd love to get a Shark, or some other EV truck that could rival or beat the current offerings here at a lower price...especially if it can be built and/or assembled here.
It would be a win win for BYD and Canadian consumers but Canada would be put over Uncle Sam’s knee and given a major spanking . Mexico has already been warned
Try to get a Tesla fixed. Especially if they have been in an accident. I am not a fan of dealers, but Tesla's model has lots of problems, chiefly lack of spare and replacement parts.
SAM .. I hope you are right..I can't wait this will wake up the CANADIAN industries ..The prices of vehicles in Canada are OUTRAGEOUS as a MIDDLE class income can't afford to purchase a NEW vehicle ..
Same almost everywhere because consumers don’t really care where the cars are made as long as it fit the budget of more 90% low income population. Price is skyrocket on everything the last few years people can’t afford to pay $10k or $20k more for a car
Don't worry Sam. I have a brain. I bought a BYD Atto 3 back in 2022 - ordered January 2022 - because of you. You put me on to the Atto 3. Yes, we did have a few glitches with software, one being catastrophic as it bricked the car! But to blame you? How 2024 and how ridiculous. We've been so happy with our BYD apart from the one serious software problem which was immediately put right. Well done and thank you so much for this hot tip over two years ago.
That might change in the future when Canada imposes 100% tariffs on Chinese assembled EVs. The good news is, future Teslas will probably come from US factories.
Actually most Teslas sold in Canada come from Fremont, California. I think there has been some supply or delivery problems which is why some Teslas were Chinese made. Now with the possibility of Chinese Tariffs, unless they are exempted your Tesla might come from Europe? India? Canada?
Sam, the American opposition to everything Chinese is about power politics. The US sees itself in decline economically and politically and sees China as the risting power. Anything that benefits China is seen as harming the US. You can debate the rationality of this attitude, but that's basically what's happening. China is also scapegoated for supposedly "causing" American industrial decline. Again, an entirely irrational posiiton - the US was in industrial decline long before the "China shock" - but that is the easy narrative that Americans of both major political parties tell their people.
Unfortunately, China is "hitting a wall" (almost literally!) as an economic power due to the negative demographics of that country, a fallout from the "one child per family" policy. Companies in China are finding it increasingly difficult to fill out their work force becuase of the increaseing lack of young workers.
As an American; I have no opposition to anything Chinese. The only reason we’re forced to these tariffs is cause Michigan is a swing state and will be a political nightmare to either party “looking” weak on supporting American made cars. Which again I don’t care, I like most Americans drive Hondas & Toyota's.
China is willing to provide enormous state subsidies to the tech it intends to dominate in global markets ... just for the auto batteries alone they provide an average of $4000.00 per vehicle. I have no idea what the average Chinese auto plant worker makes but I bet its nowhere north of $44/hr (avg.) US workers make. In effect opening auto markets to China is a way to import unemployment.
@@sammavitae114 bro get out of here. Every country including US doing the same thing. That 7,500 credit for US made batteries, Tesla paying little to no taxes, etc

We’re kind of in a sticky situation right now as the government is trying to join in with the US to put a tariff and we need to stop the Chinese tariffs from coming to Canada because we need affordable EVs and currently there expensive
As a Chinese Canadian, and early adoptor of EVs (since 2017), I welcome this news. It's brilliant move by BYD to start limited import use as Uber vehicles to show people how great their cars are, and dispell the myth of Chinese EV fire risks. Then slowly, people will demand them, and democratically elected government has to bend to people's will.
I'm not about to drop over 50K CDN for an EV in Canada. Prices need to come down under 20K CDN. If BYD can deliver, I will consider this when my ICE car is ready to be crushed. Added Updated Oct 29 2024: If the Canadian government puts tariffs on Chinese EV's , they are not serious about climate change. Makes you wonder about the current carbon tax we have now.
The cheapest gas "cars" (there's only a couple) start @ 23K CAD, so asking for an EV today for under 20K is a bit unrealistic. Much akin to demanding 1000 Km range from an EV when there's nothing in the ICE market that will deliver that.
@@daemoncan2364 Just because they charge you more here for an EV than an ICE doesn't mean EVs have to be more expensive than an ICE. This is why we need competition.
I live in Canada, really pissed off by the f*ing government. Raise thousands of carbon taxes with the excuse of environment protections. Okay we try to switch to the EVs but how many choices available which are "affordable". How much for a Tesla 3? CAD$60,000+. I believe the cheapest EV is Hyundai Kona but still costs almost $60K on the road and most of the reasonable family sizes EVs are closer to $100K, plus $4K for insurances. Tell me how many Canadians can afford? Bear in mind, the average price for ICE vehicles is around $50K.
And in the rest of Canada including the rural areas when consumers realize that battery problems are a thing of the past and EV superiority will only continue to improve.

I’m Canadian and I’m excited for the possibility of buying a BYD I’m just not sure how they will come because Canada is sure to follow America 100% tax so they will have to build a plant here. Canada is the ninth largest automotive market in the world so it would be worth building a factory here. Trump has already said he would be happy to invite any China car company to build a factory in America so it’s coming at some point.
Having owned new Lexus’ in the mid to late 90s and one Acura new in 2001, then to a Bangle BMW 5er from 2004 and a new BMW every three years thereafter. Traded a G81 BMW for a BYd Seal Performance and astonished at the performance, build quality, reliability, and overall refinement and power. Couldn’t come close to the power for anything even double the price. While it won’t drive like a BMW, nothing does, it’s amazing for the cost. Looking at the new midlife cycle Seal “7” with its new interior and also the Sealion 7, Seal SUV and BYD Shark. And if Yangwang comes here the U8 will be in our garage. The Chinese improvements are so great it’s just unbelievable. Look at the Koreans, took them a better part of 3 decades to improve to where they are now. It took BYD 3 years and they are now surpassing the Koreans in all aspects. China is a force to be reckoned with. They will take over the auto industry and send some legacy manufacturers into oblivion.
I'm so tired of the sentiment in Canada about EVs. I look around and see the same old cars on the roads. The prices have been too high for the average driver. That's why you don't see many new cars on the roads. We need to do better. Canadians are hard working people and I know we can do better. I hope BYD and others make it to Canada to stir up the auto industry.
On August 27, the Canadian government announced a 100% tariff on Chinese made EVs. Now, if BYD made EVs in Mexico or Canada, it could avoid the tariffs, but it would require more than final assembly, but 70% North American components.
As Canadian, we allows way other products from China without special laws. Than mean other enterprises and domains faced the music against China with limited specifics laws. I welcome them if they can put pressure on existing manufacturers to provide more affordable products.
You said Canada and Mexico aren't very far from each other. They're over 4300 km away as the crow flies, much farther if you're measuring from an auto factory to an end consumer. Canada and Mexico are separated by more than the length of the Australian mainland measured east to west). I'd call that pretty far away, actually.
I've been long waiting for the Chinese EVs to be acailable in Canada. Too bad, if Canadian government increases the tarrif, this only means I as a customer has to spend more money. What's the point to apply the tarrif as Canada doesn't even have any own brand? 😢😢
As for BYD in Canada I would worry about after sale service since BYD have no dealers in CANADA , price is not everything , initial quality , reliability , service is also important.
I don’t think you need to worry about it…BYD will definitely have a good support network in place when they launch… it’s the 🇨🇳 way for overseas foreign buyers.

My family bought Volkswagens when they were new, Datsons when they were new, Hondas when they were new, Kia’s when they were new, so I don’t understand the pushback against Chinese vehicles. OTA updates are very reliable as the update is downloaded to the EV then checked for errors before the update of the flash memory in the vehicle is done. The only possibilities of a bricked car is a power failure or failed hardware in which case the EV wouldn't have been operational anyway.

There is a rumor that Stellantis will sell Dodge and Chrysler to BYD (potentially more brands). BYD Execs were recently in Auburn Hills, MI. Realistically, BYD, like Fiat before it, would likely not have to pay much (or anything) for these brands, but would end up taking on a lot in legacy liabilities if they took them over. While Chrysler and Dodge wrap themselves in the American flag, most of their remaining models are made in Canada. If BYD doesn't buy the brands, they could alternatively buy the manufacturing facilities in Canada from Stellantis.

Unfortunately the Canadian government piggyback on uncle joe and his twin's national security things of spying washing machine and party balloons 🎈 .

As for your comment about the Canadian auto industry "apparently thats a thing" shows your ignorance regarding the nation you chose to make a video about.
Cheers
An actual Canadian living in Canada
I am in the USA. I cry every night because I cannot trade my 2024 Bentley Continental GT Speed for a BYD Dolphin or MG electric. Damn USA trade policies!!
I will gladly do a swap for my MG!
@@TerryHickey-xt4mfwe Canadians are just so very kind.😅
BYD got $3.7B in subsidies from China and sells over 3M cars a year. Vinfast was approved for $1.2B in subsidies in the US and they maybe sell 30-40K cars a year worldwide. And yet the US has the nerve to complain about Chinese subsidies!
Because Vinfast was going to produce batteries in the US. China can also build factories in the US and get subsidies. Why dont they?
@@PelleGITCATL did do that in partnership with ford. There was a huge political hubbub about it. Suggest you do some reading before opening your trap
@@PelleGITHow they are produce batteries in the US? They even hasn't got an own battery plant in Vietnam. Currently, they use batteries from Catl, Gotion and Samsung
Vinfast is a Vietnamese company receiving US subsidies to build vehicles to be sold in the US.
China is directly subsidizing vehicles for export. Not to mention, they are indirectly subsidizing their vehicles through currency devaluation. The RMB should be at least three times its current value. That means that the people of china should be able to import significantly more than they currently do and the cost of goods from china should be significantly higher as well.
@@jessedavisson701 Vinfast makes 30-40K cars a year and gets approved for $1.2B in subsidies. The big players such as Ford, GM, and Toyota get FAR more money in subsidies than that. China subsidizes auto production, of which less than 20% are exported. How is that different from US subsidies? The US exports over 2M cars a year from the US.
The RMB is trading at 7.16 to 1 USD. Are you actually claiming that the rate should be 2.39 RMB to 1 USD??? That's just absurd nonsense.
The US also has tricks to directly subsidize their exports. The US charges profits made by US companies outside the US at about half the rate of profits made in the US. That is a MASSIVE export subsidy. Tax rates in US are 21% vs tax rates for profits outside the US of 10.5%. That's 105M of export subsidies for each $1B in profits for US exporters!
Do u guys know if microcloud hologram still in business with BYD? Would be really interesting to know🙏 apriciate all answers 🔥
my tesla is incredible. american brand . 100 percent made and 70 percent parts sourced in the states as well. in 15 years when i need to replace it , its gonna be a tesla again
In Canada most Teslaas come from China I believe
@@3184Patrick they make great cars in that plant
Good for Canadians
I'd like to see Magna build some Stellantis EVs that we can't get in USA.
As a U.S. citizen could I buy a BYD EV in Canada and drive it home? I will never buy a Tesla.
Not too impressed with BYD, but would definitely look at Geely EV’s
GM left Europe and Australia, and Ford left Brazil, I think if this trend continues they will become irrelevant, is better for the Chinese to sell their things here, maybe make them build a factory to employ American workers, than to protect your industry, that way there is completion and your product get better.
