Been hearing this for a decade now
I think once you hit 1000km of range it's time to dial it back to reduce battery. Personally I would be happy with a 500mi range EV that weighs less and charges in 10 minutes. Even 400mi of real-world range is fine by me, but I wouldn't say no to 500mi. We'll get there someday.
Probably sooner than we think, the Chinese already have their 'gold' battery that's at 1000k of range, about 600 miles so probably over 500 miles of real world range. I genuinely believe at that point its game over for the old legacy cars

Our Chinese Tesla Model YLR is just excellent, two and a half years on and I still have the silly smile on my face and not one single issue. being an septuagenarian I've had 'one or two cars' over these many years but nothing even touches this beauty, it's just learned to to park like a pro this week !
Not sure we'll see that much range like 1,000km widely offered in mainstream cars, because it's not really necessary, and it would inflate the cost without really adding. I live in the Western US and really a highway range of 400 mi / 700km would be about the target IMO. I mean that is a good 6 to 7 hrs on the road and well beyond we what most people ever drive, beyond once or twice a year. Right now I have an EV with a range of about 235 miles, it does pretty much everything I need it to do, I'm not aching for more range but yes I would gladly pay for a model with 350 or 400 mile range, to make longer trips more attractive and to give me some buffer. I mean yes a few car models will offer special high-capacity batteries as an option probably, but not mainstream. Now pickup trucks and people who tow trailers, that is a completely different story. And motorcycles where ev batteries today are just not at all up to the task, today they go like 100mi. Certainly aircraft . . . Much more energy dense batteries will open up a lot of these other uses.

One other huge benefit with SSBs - safety. They are way less likely to catch fire if compromised.
Light is right. A roadster doesn't need long range (or ridiculous doors) but a smaller, lighter battery.

depends where you live. In Shanghai I have a dozen brands with top EVs I'd never switch back to ICE for. Left a stinky gasoline Porsche behind today, with my Nio family car. Was kinda fun good feeling
There was an EU report on solid state in 2018 which said they were 10 years away from commercialisation (2028) so 2026 is a bit faster than predicted - by 2030 they'll be in loads of vehicles.

The big issue in the states is that when they develop something new, they throw it out to the public guinea pigs and wait for all the complaints and disasters to return instead of doing their due diligence in R&D! But in the meantime, they've taken care of their upfront money!

Breakthroughs generally come in small steps. Comparing batteries of 5 years past, we do have breakthrough albeit small steps like safety, energy density.

Honestly, 600km range with full charge in 10 min covers 99% of the consumer demand. This is almost here, with lighter batteries to boot.

Ok, so they're heading in the right direction. Range has to go up a little bit, while prices have to fall quite a lot. When 30.000 $/€ cars have an effective range of 800 km and can recharge in 10 minutes, you know its definitely game over for the ICE cars. Lets see if that happens in the next 2-3 years...
How is it over for ICE exactly?
- After 3 years the EV is basically worthless.
- 10 min charge is not a 1min fill up.
- EV spontaneously combust
- Good luck in a crash in an EV
- ICE can be 40 years old they work. EV lifespan is 3 years yet they are 30.000k minimum for a tiny car with rubbish range.

@@TerbrugZondolop Lol where did you get 3 years? Scott Kimmels? Where I live theres BYD taxi from 2016 who still have juice in its battery and have not yet spontaneously combust while I personally saw 3 car burn in just 5 years.
Also You can charge everywhere and as individual you can also produce your own electricity compared to gasoline that require government intervention.

These are fantastic videos - I see hundreds of fully automated machines assembling everything and some 3 or 6 semi-skilled workers helping a bit. The future is here: machines and electricity do the job, people enjoy their free time with family leisurely, study, engage in arts and sports and philosophical talk. The only bit missing is governments taxing machines and giving that money to workers who don´t want to work 45 years in a row - but only 20 or who don´t aim for a luxurious lifestyle but for some work-life balance. Something, somewhere is going wrong on the whole social component. Huge range finally sounds great - it will make another generation of existing EVs obsolete.

Batteries tend to be modular. Why couldn't a new solid state battery pack be installable in an 'older' EV? (even 'if' the battery is worth most of the car)

One of the current problems is EV resale value. With such a rapid pace of innovation EV's that sold 5 years ago are obsolete today and those selling today will be obsolete in 5 years creating low resale value, driving down prices.
I soory you made a comment about Toyota promising solid state batteries 2014. Dismissing they as a contender in the race to manufacture and bring to market. They are currently building a massive plant in N. Carolina in the USA. They have over 27,000 patents in regards to EV batteries. They will be a leading contender.

Elon has said that 300 mile range is all that most people want to buy so its likely the battery pack will get smaller and cheaper rather than the range getting longer except maybe as an option.

It never ceases to amaze at China speed in whatever sector the apply themselves. No wonder the EV market is dominated by China, no one else can keep up and compete. This is like 5G in the US. China is already moving on to 6G and the US is still digesting 5G. It appears the EV market is the same. I doubt any western company can compete. The EU tariffs are supposed to delay the eventual and give time to catch up. It's new battery giant., Northvolt, that was poised to compete with China has gone belly up. Now it is a matter of time as the EU gets flooded with Chinese hybrids and as soon as Chinese EV factories gain traction with new factories in the EU, legacy automakers will have a difficult time competing.

I will wait until they tell us the real KWH/KG and how big KG the battery really is. The marketing blurb is suitably vague saying up to 80% more energy density than something they haven't put number on. Lets remember biodiesel has an energy density of 10 kwh/kg and the best current Lithium tech is 0.4 kwh/kg. Even +80% 0.72 kwh/kg would be an improvment but since liquid fuel has 15x the energy density of batteries, I don't think ICE will disappear ever.

Batteries with 300whkg or higher energy density will transform small EVs.the new Renault 5 for instance could get well over 300 mile range and faster charging from the same physical size battery pack. Whilst full solid state could give small EVs 400mile plus or big battery size and weight savings. Imagine 300mile plus range and super fast charging in the new Hyundai Inster.

no. swapping components will give insurers nightmares bc there is no way to ensure the safety of switched batteries. There will also be proprietry technology involved to stop non original parts being used. Apple on wheels. Digital Rights Management will ring fence products and consumers.
Face it, with the exception of China itself, EV sales are flatlining. First, the US, and then the EU to follow and will both enact tariffs that level the playing field.

It would suit me if they had a realistic range of 250-300 miles and the car was lighter rather than just giving it maximum range at the same sort of weight as the older battery.
As far as I know, at least three battery manufacturers have announced plans to start production of semi-solid batteries in 2025. A 1000 km range plus a solar roof is good enough to charge the car once a month or even less frequently.
You were not good in maths at school, right? There no way you can charge a 70 kWh battery car with a solar roof in a decent amount of time (unless you live in a castle and have a square kilometer of solar panels.... - come on, do your homework before writing.)

If you have a battery with a 1000 km range and drive about 30 km per day (on average for workdays and weekends), you would need to fully charge it roughly once a month, right? Current technology already allows for solar surfaces capable of covering a daily range of 20-25 km. In this case, you would only need to recharge your car every 3 to 6 months.
By the way, that's 3rd-grade math.
Or could you have 30% smaller battery if a smaller lighter car was what you were looking for ?

There will be upgrades needed, as is always the case with the grid. But new technologies, such as utility scale batteries will help immensely with the transition, as peak loads (i.e., everyone trying to charge at once) will be greatly reduced.
Note that the average passenger EV uses only about 6kWh per day. That's only about half of what the average domestic hot water tank needs per day...
Note that removing the extraction, transport, refining, distribution, and dispensing of fossil fuels will *actually* save more electricity, by a significant margin, than if every vehicle was an EV, including land, aviation, and water.

In the USA, around 4,000TWh of electricity is generated annually.
Of that, about 25% is used on fossil fuel processing - yes, there is that much electricity used. From extraction, transport, refining, distribution and dispensing.
Switching to 100% EV would actually save electricity. And that doesn't even consider the fact that a lot of indirect fossil fuel processing industries would be shut down. For example, fuel transport trucks would no longer be needed, and thus no longer maintained or manufactured.
Electrical distribution will have some challenges in areas, due to rapid changes in demand. This can be alleviated with utility scale batteries to average out the peak demands in many cases.
Forget the million mile battery warranty bump the time up to 15-20yrs and 300K miles.
I wish it would matter about power density. These manufacturers won’t increase mileage. They will just put in smaller batteries into cars, keep prices the same and pocket the extra profit. You know that’s what they are going to do. I wish they would increase range to 450 miles average and make longer range cars 500. But you know they won’t.

Sodium ion battery pack prices will be less than $20 per kmh. within 4 years. With those prices, EVs in the US will cost less than $13k. Solid state-based battery packs can then serve the higher end of the market.
Sodium ion batteries last half as long as lithium ion batteries and have 30% lower energy density, which means hauling more weight around. I don't think heavier cars/short life batteries are going to cut it.

My car lease is up this year. I was going to make the switch to an EV and specifically one of the new offerings coming out of China. My big concern now is that in 5y time when my new lease is up how outdated 2025 EVs are going to be and how is this going to impact the resale value. I guess worse case scenario with a lease is I can just hand it back if the resale value is lower than the balloon payment.

Sam, why don’t you give some numbers? You quote percentages, but a percentage of what? The MG you say might get 30% more range; so what is that? Doesn’t it have some drawbacks? Energy lost during charging? Internal resistance of the cells? The expected life? Solid state batteries have been promised for a long time. I won’t hold my breaths.
When it goes for 500 miles and takes 20 minutes to charge, I'll buy one. But I have some doubt that will happen in my lifetime.
This whole chat reminds me of people banging on about graphene, and how it will change the world. It never does, it's always a few years away.
I thought EV range had to be much higher than 200 miles, but it turns out that I don’t feel so drained at the end of a 500 mile drive in an EV compared to a fossil car. I’ve put it down to the 20min leg stretch every 2hrs.
@danhough7574 it's not so much that people want to drive 500 miles in one sitting. But there isn't always a convenient period of 5 hours to recharge within each 100 mile trip. It has no flexibility.

I find EV’s are more flexible because I can fill up at home. Ok, so not so flexible if you don’t have home charging, but a lot could do home charging and they’re missing out on cheaper travel. Induction charging is coming which will means this holy grail battery is not needed for most.

They pollute more over the life of the car all things considered compared to same size gas car and hybrid.
Even vw admitted it takes at least 40000 miles for a new ev say a golf to equal the carbon footprint of a gas car even longer for a hybrid ..then yes they do pull ahead, until the hard to recycle battery needs replacing, then they fall behind again.
And if you are using public or Tesla chargers those mainly use coal gas etc for power
If you have solar at home that can definitely help evs ahead.
We need to tell the whole truth the destruction of land and mining that uses tons of gas oil and carbon to find and mine heavy metals which the earth produces less of them coal gas oil which is constantly being renewed and found and can be mined with less of an impact greenwise the heavy metals lithium cobalt etc.
BEV are not 0 emission vehicles.
Sure nothing out the tailpipe evs pollute going in gas going out.

Should not EV manufacturers be reducing the size of their battery packs, reducing the power of the vehicles and increacing the availiability of charging stations given that the power density and charging speed of batteries is improving?
Who really needs an EV that can accelerste from 0-60 in less than 8 seconds and run for more than 300 miles on a single charge?
These things are primarily intended to be a replacement for ICE vehicles.
other sources say that in 2025 this technology will only be officially presented and production will take place in 2026/27 at the earliest, so now we can only speculate...

New type of batteries with higher energy density improves range !? I don’t see how this could be. Unless the battery capacity in the car in terms of KwH increases. With the same battery capacity in KWh, irrespective of the type of battery, the range would be the about same. Higher energy battery car may improve the range slightly bcos of lighter weight.

It's always important when arguing with ICE-heads about the advantages of EVs that EVs are changing rapidly. Many if not most issues that are cited as problems are already being worked on and will likely be resolved in a few years. Range, charge time, weight, sourcing chemicals for the batteries, battery recycling...all of these will likely be non-issues in ten years. They're still cars, though, and public transit should be massively improved rather than just giving everyone an EV. But if there's a car on the road in 2050, it needs to be electric.
Battery lifespan is a big deal as once battery is past warranty, Tesla and other companies will not repair them, yet they are repairable.
Micro-crystall batteries have been charged and discharged and tested for the last 6 years.
Not too keen on faster charging as our Tesla already charges quite fast, faster than I can eat my lunch anyway !
They should have waited for this technology before they jammed this down our throats and fucked everything up.
