Is there any way to do a pre-heat with a kiln that is not electronic? I have an old Cress FTX911M (doll kiln) with a sitter that has just a thumbwheel and a timer (LT-3K). I am wondering if just setting the timer to 1 hour might give it a similar pre-heat effect.

I used to have L&L kilns with limit timers. Preheating can even start on low with the kiln lid cracked open to allow steam to come out. One to two hours. Then close the lid and follow stepped increases with the dial settings.

I used to throw smooth stone all the time..?

I disagree with your assessment of Tucker’s Smooth Stone. It is not as moist as BMix and doesn’t break down into a sloppy mess when turning on the wheel. I use Tucker’s Clay exclusively - smooth raku, smooth stone, CCSS and Red Stone…all great clays.
