    I work in an environment where I have to walk around all day with managers, leads and cameras breathing down my neck at any given moment. It'd be literally impossible for me to lug around a steam deck or switch. But I cannot begin to tell you how many hours I've been able to sneak behind their backs with the MM+. I feel like a kid again, playing my gameboy under my desk in class. The portability of this thing is unmatched, save for the RG35XX.
    I also get many compliments when popping this thing out of my pocket. This thing is just super sexy to look at, compared to more bulky, switch-like devices.
    Also, I've never met anyone in this retro handheld community that HASNT modded their device to hell and back, so the buttons comfort issue is completely fixable and irrelevant. Mine in its current modded state is very comfortable.
    TLDR I feel like the whole point of buying devices in this scene is to clock more hours on old games we love. The MM+ does exactly thay, and exactly what it sets out to accomplish. It just doesn't fit your lifestyle.

  • @coltsrnumerouno
    @coltsrnumerouno 9 месяцев назад +9

    I think for me, what I enjoy about the MM+ and other systems of its size is the smaller screen.
    My Steam Deck is great for emulating GameCube/PS2 and what have you, but those games feel more natural to me on a bigger screen.
    For older games that are pixel based, I feel that they look so much better on a screen that is designed around the original aspect ratio that they were designed in.
    Like yes, you can play these older games in a windowed mode to make them the correct ratio, but it still just doesn't look right to me. Devices like the MM+, Analoge Pocket, 35xx etc just really captures the right feel to me as well as really makes those pixels and their colors pop.
    For these specific eras of gaming, I think this is what I absolutely wanted.
    Great review though and happy to hear a review from someone on the other side of the fence. What's even crazier, is that this isn't even their smallest version. The regular MM is so much smaller.

    A few things for anyone interested in the Miyoo Mini Plus to consider:
    -The SD card that comes with the system is very bad (cheaply made, unreliable). You can get a much better one for like 10-15 bucks.
    -There's a great community-made operating system for the Mini called Onion OS. It adds a ton of cool features and is super customizable.
    -The shoulder buttons will suck no matter what you do, but there are 3d printed replacements you can get that make them a little better.
    -If you can't buy the Miyoo Mini Plus, there's another system called the Anbernic RG35XX that uses the same processor with a nearly-identical design that tends to be much more frequently stocked.
    I bought the regular Miyoo Mini back when it was available, and don't regret it. It's a great system for the price, but don't pay any crazy aftermarket prices for it. The handheld market is tremendously competitive, and there's always alternatives for everything.

      What is so bad about the SD card? I don't exactly "follow" the community on these handhelds, so im surprised to see this. Did people have a lot of failing / corrupted cards or something? I installed Onion OS, loaded up the roms i wanted, and i've been playing games with mine for a year (regular mini, obviously). Never had any issues with the SD card.

    • @Channel2S
      @Channel2S 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@ZenzDeluxe The QC on the stock cards is very poor as they pretty much just include the cheapest card they can get their hands on. Many, many people have issues with their device that can be traced back to a faulty/unreliable card, so its common practice to replace it with one from a reputable brand as soon as you get it in hand.

    @TXFDA Год назад +6

    I don't think it's particularly overhyped. I think it's a victim of the time. At the time when they original Miyoo Mini came out, it was dope. Fairly cheap, played up to PS1, small enough to shove in a pocket. And, it worked well for what it was expected to do. The issue with the Plus, isn't that it's "overhyped", it's that it's carrying the hype over from the original Miyoo Mini, but at this point in time, other companies have already made similar if not better devices. The Anbernic RG35XX is essentially a Miyoo Mini clone but a bit bigger. And that came out WELL before the Miyoo Mini Plus released. So by the time the Plus came out, we already had a near-identical alternative. And now, we have other budget handhelds kicking around. I mean hell, $99 gets you the new Retroid Pocket 2S that can do everything a Miyoo can, but also has 2 hall effect sticks, a touch screen running Android, and two Analogue triggers. But can also play MORE, like Dreamcast, Atomiswave, Naomi, and N64.
    Me, I don't have a Miyoo yet. But I've been doing research. Probably ordering one today. I already have a Retroid Pocket 2+, and, I like it. But I'm not the biggest fan of the D-Pad placement, and definitely not a huge fan of it using Android. It comes off feeling like I'm emulating on a super old low-end phone with a controller attachment. It feels like I'm opening files on a phone as opposed to playing games on a game console.
    So for me, I'm going into the Miyoo expecting it to run up to PS1, and no Dreamcast or N64. Along with it being a vertical handheld, which I want for the nostalgia mainly. I'm expecting it to feel at least somewhat cramped due to the vertical design, but, I can still play on my GBA SP just fine, so I'm not super worried about that. I think at this point, I'm knowledgeable enough about the Miyoo Mini Plus to say I'm making an informed purchase. Buy it, immediately install OnionOS to get rid of the not-very-good stock OS. I gotta copy some Retroarch stuff over like my overlays/borders and such. I'm gonna get a new Micro SD card with it and set that up with my own roms and OnionOS, as opposed to using their no-name SD card and potentially janky and bloated rom lists. I haven't looked into OnionOS itself, but from the comments I've heard in videos, it seems easy to install (just copy and extract it to the root of the SD card and plug it in). It also seems like OnionOS is updating fairly often to take advantage of the Wifi that the Plus has now, for things like a Real Time Clock and RetroAchievements.
    So yeah, TLDR: I don't think the Miyoo's overhyped. I think it's hyped enough if you know what you're getting and aren't expecting it to do more than it's meant to. It's overhyped as hell if you buy one, expecting it to run N64, PSP, Dreamcast, DS, and anything more powerful. But I think the hype is justified if you're buying it specifically for 8-16 bit games, PS1, and maybe some Arcade games. It's built well, does what it claims to do, well, and is still small enough to not be an issue in your pocket. Plus even the shoulder buttons are purposely made flat on the back so there's nothing jutting out to get caught on a pocket or bag (unlike the RG35XX).

      This is a brilliant breakdown and very comparable to a lot of what ive seen and read about it via other reviewers. I ordered one from Banggood UK for £57 with a 128gb sd and honestly i am really looking forward to it, i was always a SEGA kid growing up so the whole Nintendo, GB, GBA era kinda flew past me. I also keen to catch up and re-play some old PS1 games like MGS, Gran Turismo and the older final fantasy games. I travel from Scotland to England to visit family every so often and as i commute on the train, im sure this will eat up the time which is exactly why i want it. I went for the transparent purple colour, although after seeing it in some videos i actually now prefer the transparent black with the skittle buttons but to be honest out of the four colours, no matter which one i ordered id still want another colour because they look so cool!

    I got mine a few days ago. I did a lot of comparing to real world items to get an idea of the size before deciding to pull the trigger on it.
    Honestly, my biggest motivating factor in choosing this over another model was its "pocketability". Sure, I have my modded switch, my steam deck, my modded game boys, modded PSP, modded Vita... I really like tinkering with handhelds haha
    But none of those things really and truly fit comfortably in a pocket, and that's what I was buying for. So all in all, I really enjoy it for what it is- a way to play lightweight titles or old RPGs while waiting for the bus, on a coffee break at work, etc, in a package that is typically too cumbersome for those particular times and places.
