Jaime and Erik built our house. They are the most professional, honest, and genuine people you’ll ever met. The best contractors you’ll ever find. The most talented carpenters you’ll ever hire. There is no way this accident will stop or change any of that. This accident is so devastating and frightening. Jaime, if anybody will come back stronger, more determined, and on top IT IS YOU!

I have never commented on anything before but I feel I might have something of value to say. I got hit in the knee with a stump grinder a little over two years ago. Pulled out my knee cap, broke my femur, and ripped the tendon. Almost lost my leg above the knee. It too was a really preventable accident. But these things happen even to the best of us. Having gone through that I’d say most important thing is to not let the negative thoughts win. I thought I was stupid for standing where I was when I got hit and that I would never work again and that my wife wouldn’t love me if I couldn’t do things. There were times I thought my life was over. But it wasn’t. It wasn’t easy and it was incredibly painful for two years and even now I still get some pain sometimes. I was given very bad reports by the doctors saying I would never be able to bend my knee again and my leg got infected and they had to operate a second time to clean up the infection. So many bad things happened and each time I had to fight out of the dark thoughts and through the pain. But I’m fully functional now. I do physical work for a living too. My knee works about 90% and I can do whatever I want. Just stay strong and work hard. Stay positive and work through the pain. It will be ok. Even if it seems like it won’t. The only way it won’t be ok is if you give up. I love your videos, have watched every single one. Donated some money and bought a shirt. Hope to see you back in the videos soon Jamie!

After 40 years of working with woodworking machinery, I never imagined that this could happen with a jointer. I have an obviously bad habit of running both the jointer and the planer at the same time while processing stock. Now that you've shared your story, I will not do it again. It takes half a second to turn the machine on or off during use. It will obviously take you many months or dare I say years to recover from your injury. Thank you for sharing your story through the pain. It shall not go unheard, or unheeded. I gave what I could to your GoFundMe, but if I can, I will give more next month. Take care, and heal up fast, Jaime. We are all right there with you!

I knicked my right ring finger pulling a board on backside of my table saw.
The nerve damage cause what some people call numbness. I actually considering it static noise of the nerve. You eventually stop noticing it all the time and only notice it sometimes. But it will never go away.
      My injury was small.
I can only imagine what Jaime it anyone who has suffered a worse injury goes through.
Since then, I've limited my use of the table saw, and have been very aware of my hands and fingers around blades. I'm looking for a new table saw with the safety guards. But I mostly design my projects so I don't need the table saw.

They say that every safety rule and procedure is written in someone else's blood. True statement. At least your still around to tell of the dangers of a jointer. I've had stuff happen to me that I never saw coming. Everything is fine till it isn't and the utter shock of it blows your mind for a few minutes. Shock is a killer. It's crazy and surreal. Lol. You will be fine tho. And as much as someone may disagree you are lucky that's all you lost.

I am 13 and I like doing a lot of woodworking and carpentry and I always get told by my parents to take all the safety precautions and even though I am not working with a jointer, any power tools can be dangerous if you even lose concentration for one second. So as Jamie always says be very careful and always be safe!

I am a “weekend woodworker”, a hobbyist, and am still nervous around power tools although I use them for building my projects. Hang tough brother. I am a year and two days off of a ladder accident (after 21+ years on ladders daily). I post only to encourage you to get back to work ASAP. I had to ride in a wheelchair and advise on building process to my son and father, but was crawling around the jobsite within a few weeks. I am still at maybe 70%, but staying active through the pain has really helped to stave off the negativity that comes with these ordeals. Sounds like you have good folks around you. Let them help. I know that is not the nature of those in this profession, but let them. They want to, and you need them to. Godspeed friend.

Jaime, I just watched you video about losing your fingers. I have just found the Perkins Build Borthers video's in the last week or so (06/06/2023). In several of the videos I noticed you had lost your finger and had wondered how. I got my left hand caught in my table saw in 2011 while making a drawer bottom for several drawers I was making. The drawer bottom was just a bit to wide so I moved to the table saw to trim 1 blade clef of the bottom and did not remove my gloove and the middle finger of my left hand caught the blade and pulled my hand down into the blade.
Thankfully I had lowed the blade to just enought clearance and it just cut my fingers up but not off. I index finger to the brunt fo the cut and is stiff from the 2nd knuckle. I want to thank you for sharing your story. I aslo want you to know I completely enjoy watching your RUclips channel. The builds are amazing. Thanks again and be safe!!

I’ve left the jointer on soo many times, with the vacuum running and my ears on.
Same jointer too. This has always been my biggest fear. Luckily we have the shield on ours. Still something I shouldn’t be doing. But when you are going from the jointer to the planer, and trying to knock the work out. Things get forgotten. Not until you turn everything off, do I notice that I left the jointer on
    Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Seeing this now is great. I became a fan of the channel recently. That horrible accident didn't slow you down in the long run. You persevered. Good on you. God works in mysterious ways for mysterious reasons. I have a big big big tragedy that happened to me, but I'm back living my life at 97% just like you. We both left a little bit on the field. Don't question fate or the plan. 😇👍🙏

Jamie as someone who was born with only the use of one hand. I got to say you are a inspiration. I was born with a bad case of erbs palsy. I have little to no use from the elbow down. At 30 years old I work in hotel maintenance solo at a 108 room hotel. I do anything from electrical, plumbing, drywall, and carpentry. Once again you sir are a inspiration

Thank you for sharing, Jaime. I have had bad dreams about my hand slipping off of a board that I was running through the jointer. Hearing you describe your accident made the hair on my neck stand up. I applaud your attitude to face your situation and admit the mistake but not beat yourself up. You have paid a high price and we all will learn from you. God bless you and your family.

We're sorry to hear about your accident Jamie. We hope you have a speedy recovery, and don't let it stop you from doing what you love! A few years ago Dave (from our channel) had a similar incident happen to a boss of his working on a table saw just a few feet away from him, and that man lived, ate, and slept safety. This hits very close to home, and we wish you all the best!

I’ve seen Jamie’s hand in a few videos and wondered what happened.
Never would have guessed it only happened a short time ago.
Incredible recovery and just getting back to work. Some people would have had the same injury and gone on disability for the rest of their lives. ❤️ you guys even more.

I’m surprised that most woodworking equipment doesn’t have some kinda indicator light on it. It gets so loud in a shop that you can’t hear individual pieces of equipment running. Some kinda indicator light would be nice.

    That's brutal bro!
Accidents happen man, I once borrowed a drop saw that was already set up by another contractor to cut some skirting boards I'd missed the day before. The bench collapsed midway thru me beginning a cut and nearly cut my hand off. The blade come to rest in the back of my hand. I had my saw in my toolbox just didn't want to lose 10 mins setting it up. It was regrettably avoidable but it happened. I think my pride took a beating that day too. Keep your head up your a legend in the building game, rest up and do your best to recover.

I am an older single woman and always try to do my home repairs/updates myself. Yesterday I was looking for a video to help me finish out my window jam and trim when I came across your how to video. I was so impressed with how you explained what you were doing, why you did it that way, and then showed each step. Out of all the videos I watched, yours is the one I used. Today, I wanted to look at more of your how to videos and found out about your accident! I used to be married to a carpenter and know how dangerous all the tools can be. He cut his thumb off when he was 19 years old with a circular saw. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family during this time. I will keep you in my prayers and know that God will carry you through this. Joshua 1:9 "...Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."

I’m not in the habit of commenting, but I really enjoy your channel. We built a new house in 2018. During the construction of our home one of the crew cut their thumb off with a chop saw. We were shocked and saddened that someone was hurt building our house, but the gentleman was resilient and back on the job quickly. I wish you and your family the very best in your recovery.
