High school shop teacher here. I show your video every year when we learn the jointer. Your injury does not go unnoticed. This content is helping to inform the next generation of woodworkers on the true consequences and why we put safety first. Thank you for sharing and posting.
Awesome. Took wood shop in high school and the teacher was over my shoulder when I was using the chop saw to make some cuts. Out of nowhere we heard a weird sound coming from the plainer. We both look over and see one of my classmates holding his hand in the air and was just in shock. He was taken to the ER and ended up being fine with only one finger getting damaged. Just goes to show that no matter what you’re doing always be alert and know where your hands are when working with any machinery. I’ll always remember that moment and will probably never forget the sound that came from that machine.
I broke my arm recently while building my first spec house. Your ability to continue on without complaining or feeling sorry yourself has really helped me carry on.
Jamie, you may not read this as this video is quite old now and I have only recently found you guys on RUclips, but I just wanted to say you are awesome and an inspiration. I am sure there are daily reminders for you regarding difficulties, but after watching your more recent videos prior to finding out how you lost some of your digits on here, so glad you are the kind of man that doesn’t let an incident like this hold you back in life. I also lost a finger in the exact same way (luckily only one right hand middle finger) when I was 5 years old… I snuck into my fathers shop while he was working, guard wasn’t on, he had his back turned, I touched the machine, my finger was gone, his heart was broken. Please have a lock on your door to your shop…. Kids will be kids. Love the channel, keep up the good work!!!
Man, you're such a decent and humble human being. A real inspiration. Stay strong... but if there's the odd day you want to cry or scream or shout "Why me". Do just that. It's perfectly normal
Man oh man Jamie, you're positivity and faith is just inspiring to me. Totally aside from all the great work you do and the injury and everything else, You just seem like such a good person! Nothing can stop you!
I was shocked when I first saw the video that said you were in an accident. If anything this video has made me rethink all the things I’m doing during construction that I could be much safer doing. Like every day at work since your accident I’ve been being super conscious of what I could be doing to make sure I’m safe. So thank you for sharing. I know if you could see into the future that you’d see you’ve prevented 100’s of injuries from people watching this and being extra careful on the job. I’m glad you still have some of your fingers, your hand, your forearm and your bicep left. And with your work ethic I’m sure you will be just as efficient as you were. Thanks again for sharing
You have caused me to be MUCH more aware of how I work with my tools. I mean you really made a difference in how I use my workshop. Thank you so much for sharing and I wish you the best of luck in healing.
This is gnarly bro. Just a reminder this can happen to anyone. Even people with experience who practice a safe work ethic . You and your brother are inspirational.
As a builder myself in WNC, I know that your time is valuable, and how you have been sharing your’s lately for all of us in the building industry is a treasure. The best is yet to come.
Now I understand at least one reason you probably read a lot of the comments, even when this channel has grown so large. You are such an amazing and positive person and I'm glad you didn't take this as a negative.
I’m just amazed at how you are handling this. I know in private you have your moments. You are an inspiration to me and so many others. I continue to pray for you and your sweet family and your quick recovery.
Jamie, I know that this video is a few years old and you seem to have adjusted well to the loss of your fingers. For some reason, this particular video is very touching to me. Thank you for sharing your journey through this event with your youtube followers. I think it is amazing that you are willing to let us into your life and share your fears and vulnerabilities with all of us. You are very brave, and a good example of how we should all face our own fears. BTW, I love your and your brother's channel and binge-watch each of the projects, and even though I don't comment often, I really enjoy the content, humor, and banter between the crew. God Bless.
I love watching your how to videos. You are a true professional with a gift to help us learn with out talking down!! I will not bore you with my hand injury stores. You hand will get so much better, just not as fast as you think it should. I still pray for you. It’s hard but count you blessings in life. You can still and will do better than most.
Jamie, I feel your pain. I cut my thumb off with a circular saw while on top of a roof cutting a joist back that was sticking out. The saw binded and kicked back and I had no choice but to stop the saw from hitting me in the stomach with my hand. It happened so fast, I had no time to think. I grew up in a family of house framing contractors and worked on a job site since I was 10 years old and have always been so careful and smart around power tools. Accidents happen to everyone, no matter of skill level or expertise. With all that said, I remember and still cringe ten years later of them removing the gauze and wrapping around my hand because it was so damn painful. I am praying for you and hope you continue to heal quickly and get back to normalcy with work and family life.
damn, that Is tough, sorry to hear that. One of the first things I learned was to stand beside the blade, no matter what the tool is, except for a few exceptions
These comments are amazing. A truly great community. I’m just a DIY guy whose biggest projects have been a fence and a small building in my yard, but I’ve been careless with my tools at times. You’ve done me a great service by reaching out and making this series of videos showing the possible consequences of my actions. I wish you the speediest of recoveries and I’ll keep learning from you and your channel as long as you keep posting. It doesn’t seem that you need anyone to tell you to stay strong, so I’ll just say I look forward to your next video.
Hi Jaime, best wishes for your recovery. Bravery is an often used word, but your ability to face and share your experience strikes me as really brave. I have just started a new career as a carpenter, I’ve been on site for 7-8 weeks. Your story has been a moving and timely reminder to a newbe of the potential dangers of the job. Thank you for sharing your experience and I wish you all the best for the future. Simon.
Been watching the channel for a couple months now ... always wondered about the accident/what happened and now I know. I feel SO fortunate that my construction accident was pretty superficial: Skill Saw to 3x fingers ... but no tendons/ligaments or bone. 20 years later I still have some nerve damage, but MAN was I lucky. I know these vids were uploaded years ago ... but I'm glad/happy that it didn't stop you from doing what you obviously love. Cheers!
Jamie, I know you kept talking about being scared, but I always tell my kid you can't be brave without fear. After all bravery is just overcoming fear, and you sure did that! I am fairly new to the channel and had to come back and watch these to see what happened. The only way I was able to watch these is the knowledge that you pull though it all.
An injury like yours makes me hope that one day saw stop technology will integrate with all shop tools for a. Much safer work environment creating a new standard much love I’m a welder and steel labor buy trade good luck brother
I been wanting to get into woodworking for a few years now but never had the space to do it. I recently moved and after I watched your video on how to operate a speed square I decided that was it. Since then I’ve bought some hand tools and built a work bench to start this adventure. Thank you for gettin me goin.
Ya man that's exactly what mine looks like from what I can tell. Its a horrible thing. I hate to say that. But I promise you will be ok. Its been 5 long years for me. I am a tile setter by trade. And it's kinda hard to figure what you can and cant do. You will make it man. I'm sorry it happen. I feel for you. But I promise you will push thru and before to long you will not even pay attention to it and life will go on. Take care my friend
I went to PA. To spread my dad's ashes. My uncle asked if I wanted to come up a couple days early and lay a hardwood floor. Of course I said sure. Well I laid 500 feet in a day. And was cutting the "T" off the back of a threshold with a table saw. I cut 5'11" and when I flipped it over to cut the last inch there was a knot as soon as I touched the blade it grabbed and flipped my and right on top of the blade. Wasn't my saw had no guard on it. And that was history. Sucks
OMG Jaime, that was difficult to watch!! They all were difficult to watch !! After your accident I thought about giving up my woodworking hobby because if can happen to a professional it can happen to anyone. You and your family are in my prayers my brother!!! You are a hero for putting these videos out because it just may save someone somewhere!!!
I haven't been in my shop since learning of his accident. Wanted to get in yesterday. I couldn't. Wanted to get in today. I couldn't, but I will be back in there. Can't fear the machines. Have to respect them tho.
You are an absolute rockstar! You did so great with your first look/bandage change. Attitude is half the battle, and you have one of the best ones I’ve ever seen. Your positivity is an inspiration to all of us. 💜 Sarah
Jaime - You are a man of courage and fortitude. I'm a recent subscriber who's been thoroughly enjoying your construction videos. I'd noticed your prosthesis but you handle your work so expertly that I'd never thought too much of it. Then I stumbled on your story and... what a revelation! So much I could say Jaime but I'm sure it's much the same as so many have expressed from their hearts. Bother, you are Blessed in so Many Ways but I just want to let you know I wish you, your beautiful family and your business the very best and know also that there's a bunch of folks STILL praying for you. God is Good - Take your strength from Him. Bless You
From one amputee to another...You are a BADASS! It just gets better. That's all I can say. Doesn't seem like it now but it does! And I have the same jointer with the helical cutter head and you made me VERY aware of it's potential to hurt me!
Praying for you brotha! I'm a carpenter from Portland OR who watches your videos and really enjoys your videos! It's amazing how strong you are and inspiring how you're dealing with this. Really cant wait for the video of you back at it cause I know it coming. :)
Glad to see you doing well Jaime. I'm currently self building a new house in Oregon and love all the videos you guys post. They remind me of the way I was taught to build by my dad. The recent videos have been a huge reminder to me that things can happen to anyone and to be extra aware while building since it's not my day job anymore. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
Thank you for posting, I know what you're feeling I chopped off my left thumb with a saw but thanks to God they were able to put it back. Yes it has changed my life on how I use my tools now. Please keep on bringing any videos and my prayers are for the perkins family.
Thanks for the video Jamie. Thank God and the doctors for taking care of you during this ruff time. We’re all praying for you and your family. Keep up the good spirits buddy.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING!!! I am very sorry that this happened! I can't wait to see the speedy recovery and to watch your quick abilitys to adapt to the situation. After watching this I will be more conciousness on the job. It's only been 9 years in the tile trade but I have noticed I am not paying as much attention when running skill saws, table saws, my grinder, my wet saw. Safety is very important and I will remember what you have said and use that information to help everyone I can. Safety safety safety !
You're more than a carpenter and woodworker... you're an artist. I wish I had a quarter of your knowledge of woodworking. You will be ok, you'll be back creating masterpieces in no time.
Watching this after i've watched some of the newer videos. So glad this didn't ground you down. Gut punch for sure but the craftsmanship i've seen you do despite made me rethink everything i thought i knew about american houses. Thanks for sharing
Hoping for the best for you ! We have been talking about your accident the last week or so and have been preaching safety to all my guys and how quickly the "will never" can happen. Thank you for sharing and can say that those that don't even know your name or what you do feel your pain and pray for you.
Can’t believe how you’re handling this, such an inspiration. From a fellow diy’er who works with tools frequently I can’t imagine the horror of an injury like that and you not only owned it but you’re teaching others from your experience... what a boss!! Take care and best of luck
We just recently started watching the Perkins brothers and from Canada my husband and I love watching your videos, very informative, entertaining, right on for putting in your big boy pants all the best to both of you and your families
Keep the smiles buddy. Thanks for documenting this and using it to help teach others. We all feel for you. P.s. red clearance lights of a semi truck trailer work great for that. Not blinding bright while you're working but enough to get your attention. Plus they mount in a grommet that would probably fit nicely in a piece of PVC pipe.
I cut the tip of my thumb off a day after I saw your video and I thought I was safe...you are an inspiration truly your attitude and outlook is amazing
It was hard to click "like" but I did to show my support. Years ago, I shattered my left leg. It was in a metal cage from my hip to my ankle for a year. I'll never forget the first time we took it off. It gets better, brother.
Keep your spirits up, brother. Your attitude is very inspiring. You will still have tomorrow and you are obviously making your way full speed towards it. I'm sure you are helping people with similar experiences and with that said, I thankfully have never been seriously injured by any of my machines but you are still inspiring me to move forward and get over my personal hurdles. Good for you and thank you truly. You have helped me in ways you will never know.
We are in this together, brother. So much love and prayers your way. My husband has done construction all his life. We appreciate you sharing this path.
Jamie, you’re an inspiration to us all! I’ve been a woodworker for over 30 years now. Thank you for your courage and willingness to share your experience as well as the reminder to always practice safety. Praying for your recovery brother. God bless!
I feel such empathy for you. You put on a "brave face" in these videos, but I know that as a fellow tradesman, the loss of the use of one hand is a tremendously difficult prospect. I pray for you, that your recovery will be swift, and that your life adjustments will be as well. God's blessings be with you.
I’m going through a lot in life right now. Find myself up mindlessly on RUclips all night. Found your channel and I’m so glad. Trying to be optimistic like you man.
Hey Jaime. Just saw the latest video you posted. Your a brave man looking at your injury. Love your family posts. I’m here in Canada aprox 1hr east of Vancouver BC my family send much life and god’s healing. Love you guys. So so so sorry you got hurt.
Jaime, thank you for being open and honest with us on RUclips and possibly the world. Recovery will take awhile, but with your positive attitude and grounded faith, it'll be a testimony that points to God Almighty for the great people He has put into your life this season. Best to you!!
My wife recently decided she wanted me to build her a kitchen & dining table. I’ve been make repetitious cuts and your accident has given me that constant reminder to not let my attention slip or let my guard down. Can’t thank you enough for not only that but staying so positive through a life changing event!
I am extremely thankful and impressed with your openness and vulnerability with sharing your traumatic experience with us. As a fellow carpenter, I appreciated that you use your accident to help remind your fellow craftmans to always stay mindful. I've really enjoyed your videos and look forward to all you will make in the future and see you continue to inspire. I pain for you having to go through this and hope you continue to heal with continued grave and poise. Best, Brian
Love you, Jamie, my man. I had a table saw accident about 2 years ago to where I lost just a little bone. Can't imagine the pain and mental pain as well.
Keep your head up fella. I'm a framer out in Cali. You guys are my favorite craftsmen!!! Of course "the universe" has ways to tell us to slow down and pay attention. Keep your head up bro. Can't wait for you to get back in the field. God bless.
Keep at it buddy, I fought a circular saw when I was 9 years old. Doc put hand back. Works well now 60 years later. I learnt a hard lesson. Keep smiling, cause we need more videos. Best wishes Phil.
You're doing so well with this. So, sorry about your accident. I've had my share of mishaps in my shop but nothing so serious as yours. Your way of dealing with such a life-changing injury is inspiring. I think you're going to be surprised at how much you will be able to accomplish in spite of this tragedy, and continue to inspire others.
Hi Jamie, I have never commented on here before but felt for you at this trying time. Only recently found your site and have been really enjoying the films, the Stabila level unboxing !! I am a 53 year old carpenter/joiner in the UK and have been really lucky to have not received any serious injury in my 37 years. I hope you heal fully mentally and physically and carry on with your rewarding work. you guys seem so nice i would have loved to work with you had i been a lot younger and not thousands of miles away!! Take care and keep pounding those nail! Gareth Pursey, oxfordshire, UK.
God bless you young man.i have watched your channel for awhile. Praying for you young man.I pray that you will recover and heal properly. You are a very brave man.
Literally makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck every time I watch one of your videos. Good luck with your recovery Jamie you seem to have some great support around you. Fellow carpenter in the UK x
Prayers from my family to yours during this time of need. May the blessings of God shine down on you and your family during this traumatic experience. One thing that impresses me is the way you carry yourself and the heart felt humbleness in the way you speak about this experience to others. While still being the teacher in a sense and encouraging others to be safe and careful while working with power machinery. Is there no safety guard on the plainer. I think there should be one. A guard the comes down and only the wood being plained can push it out of the way. I love y’all’s videos. I have seen them all and have learned a ton. This gives me the encouragement and the ability to build my own house. Stay strong my man. Keep the faith. You got this Jamie. We are all in your corner.
I love "building" with Perkins Builder Brothers. The first videos I saw you already had your prosthetic and I just assumed you were born with short fingers, but then I found out your accident happened while the channel was active and went back to view this series. Thank you for sharing your courage honestly. ("Put on my big boy pants" is exactly what it is, and it's OK to need a whole separate pair of pants!) You and your crew are some real class acts, taking care of one another!
Get well soon. We are all pulling for you. Thanks to you and the comments from others about adding an in line "On Light" great idea. I my add to all my dangerous equipment.
Love you dude, you’re impacting me for sure I always leave the guards off my saws. It’s a crazy thing I think our brains won’t allow us to fully understand how material our bodies are. Seeing is believing. Thank you so much for sharing this and I’m praying for your recovery and your navigation through the future as you figure things out. ❤️
My father almost lost an eye working and i can imagine how hard it is this proces of recovery for you. I wish you the best, you and your brother both are a model for us. We send you a big hug from Chile.
High school shop teacher here. I show your video every year when we learn the jointer. Your injury does not go unnoticed. This content is helping to inform the next generation of woodworkers on the true consequences and why we put safety first. Thank you for sharing and posting.
That's a great way to teach them and allso let Jamie's lesson not be in vein.❤

Glad to see you are doing much better. I Look forward to the day you are back on the job shooting videos.

Bless your heart Jamie. Recover well. Lots of love, prayers and thoughts from New Zealand 🙏

You’ve got your thumb! Makes all the difference. Prayers for your healing & adaptation regime. God bless! 🙏🏻
Take care buddy. I’ll keep you and your family in my prayers.
You my friend are from The School of Greatness. An optimist. I hope you realize how much you ignite inspiration. Stay motivated!
Glad you are up and about, and have help at home .
Keep the thankful attitude and move forward. You built to do so.
Wow, what a positive attitude for such a life changing accident. So sorry about what happened...Keep up the awesome work you do!
Keep in good faith brother! Thanks for the update.
Your a brave man. Keep healing and staying positive!!!

Best,
Brian
Stay strong dude!
I am morally torn giving a thumbs up to this video. Glad to see you're healing. Carry on Jaime. You'll get through this
You're doing so well with this. So, sorry about your accident. I've had my share of mishaps in my shop but nothing so serious as yours. Your way of dealing with such a life-changing injury is inspiring. I think you're going to be surprised at how much you will be able to accomplish in spite of this tragedy, and continue to inspire others.

Wow ,this brings it all back, the day hey took my bandages off. Thank you Jamie for sharing.
