You’re on a roll for my bmx restoration! I took the crank arm off but decided not to pull the gear completely off, I guess there’s not real reason to if the whole things cleans up nice. Thanks for sharing! Bike shop got the races out for me and gave me new hardware for my 88 restoration, need to paint this weekend!
Thank you for this very useful information. I'm currently cleaning the bearings and replacing the chainring on my Dyno Roadmaster and this vidieo was very handy. Thanks!
I've seen this style of crank on Apollo Mountain bikes (I think it's a UK only brand?) A friend mine kept killing bearings because he kept riding the bike with a loose crank, eventually it bent the crank and warped the bottom bracket barrel writing off the frame. So if you notice an significant play in your bottom bracket get it fixed as soon as possible as it can damage the bottom bracket barrel/tube.
Excellent video! ....I would love to get rid of those cages and get the benefits of loose bearings. Those are 5/16inch bearings aren't they? I notice there are nine in cage. How many would you recommend I use when ditching the cages? Thank you for your time and kind attention. Cheers!

Just bought a mongoose mode 180 for $5, it’s in good condition and after removing all the stickers, reflectors, and breaks it looks like a real decent BMX bike, one disappointing thing is it has one price cranks but can’t complain for $5 but yeah need to tighten the bottom bracket.
When refurbishing one piece cranks on bmx bikes I always replace the bearing cups because most bmx bikes take alot of abuse and often times the bearing cups will be warped
I hate how people hate on your videos you have helped me fully restore a J.C Higgins bike from 1953 cheers mate also my cousins mongoose bmx bike has rear v brakes and they stick bad could you do a video or comment on this with some tips to help thanks in advance
+Isaiah Lewis You need to isolate the issue. Is it the cable or the brakes themselves. Disconnect the cable from the brakes. Are the still stick? If not, replace the cable. If yes, then clean and lube brake pivot points.
Great video, love all of your videos but one question! Why put grease on the pedal/crank arm thread? Wouldn’t you wanna put anti seize lubricant or something of that fashion there instead?
I see a lot of these iny shop. 2 things. First, the keud washer on the non drive side has a tab that indexes in the keyway slot on the crank. They wear oit and turn. Not supposed to. 2nd, Every one Ive done required removing both cups. Crank would come out otherwise. But, if you are gona disassemble them, do it 100%. Oh, put the bearing ring in your palm and pit a dollop of grea on it and push/turn the bearing to force grease in the bearing. Ball side up in your palm.
Omg thank you! For not even trying. A guy in my area was giving a free old bmx bike wich we had no idea what it was but it had a big T logo wich I remember seeing somewhere & looked like it had another letter behind it possibly. I searched for days & gave up & while watching this video for the second time I noticed that logo on the sprocket of ur bike & then BINGO!! TREK BMX!! Shitcheah!
It's always better to replace questionable parts. Sometimes though, a replacement either isn't in the budget or isn't readily available. Careful use of a center punch on a well supported washer can extrude the key far enough to restore the locking function.
this video save for MT my old rigid mountain bike, tho I have no any kind of wrench you got there sir. moreover here in small port town mostly bike shop/repair using a large pipe wrench as they got no specialized wrench. and to remove/reinstall every part that had hole on it or to cut off chain or remove/reinstall threaded rear cassette they using brute force. using a mallet/hammer and a dull chisel/ a dull nail. sound stupid, but it's works. so what dya think sir? should i adopt it too as 'How to MT Bikes in Hack/wrong way' ? thanks :)
Thank you great explanation! Could you replace the caged bearing sets with loose bearing so as to have More bearings carry the load per side? I understand it would be tricky NOT to have the loose bearings fall out as installing the crank but grease would hold them in place. Thank you.
I recently purchased a 1983 Predator team 24 frame and fork and am now trying to piece this together. The bottom bracket is for a one piece crank. The crank is 175 mm. Wich you gave us a solution for thiese bottom bracket style becoming loose overtime i have a entry level indoor bike with the same type and it always get loose even with 2 consecutive nuts
Hi RJ - I'm doing a bottom bracket overhaul (in Spain) on a Polish Romet Mistral from the 80s which has cups like on here. I knocked the cups out to clean everything. Can you tell me the best way to re-insert the cups so they are solid please? Thanks - I love your vids and your style mate!
Put a thin coating of grease on them to help them slide in. Put a piece of wood over them, and tap them in with a mallet. Make sure they go in straight.
Is there a way to upgrade this setup to the modern ones or do I have to reuse all of my old parts. I was given a bike yesterday that uses this setup but it was disassembled probably 25 years ago so some parts are missing. Also much of the bike has been laying in a pile of bike parts to other bikes so I don't know exactly what is for what
I finally landed a 1983 Schwinn Predator team 24 that I am looking to build. I am having the hardest time with the bottom bracket. Are all one piece cranks the same size in this era or what do I need to be looking for? I am only finding 44 or 40 tooth sprockets, does one tooth make a real big difference? Any help out in the you tube world? Thanks and great video.
+kirtan samadhi Sure, you can replace the parts. But unless there is a problem with them, why? The cups are pressed in and can be removed and replaced.
cups is already rusty and i don't know if i can removed it i haven't try it yet to dismantle my bike, i got a mongoose sniper, same one piece crank like your bike.
Thanks for the video! Questions....what if the bearing cups on the frame doesn't hold the bearings in place anymore? Does that mean the entire frame is no good?
@@RJTheBikeGuy Thanks for the response, after further inspection, my bearing cups were shot. Popped them out and slapped on a new set....we're rolling again. 😁
