- How to overhaul the bottom bracket on a BMX bike with a one piece crank set. I clean and lube everything. I could have replaced the bearings, but they looked like they were in good shape. The bike is a Trek Subvert 1.0.

RJ The Bike Guy just one question, how did you clean the bearings?
@@YourMom-kp8xs Often in mineral spirits, and with citrus degreaser and a scrub brush, or a combination of both.
Thanks bud, been slaving on my bike all day!
Doesn't matter how long since you posted this - you're ALWAYS my go-to guy for these videos when someone brings me some "new" bike problem to fix!!
Once again you've saved my bacon. Both my kids bikes needed BB overhaul with one piece cranksets. Now both are super smooth and wobble free. Many thanks as always RJ
THIS is the video I needed. I can't even bare to watch Park Tool videos with that old guys monotone voice and turns really simple procedures into sales videos for tools sold by Park Tools. No, I did not need the $30 - 15mm pedal wrench. I used my 15mm craftsman wrench and it worked just fine. I can't tolerate their videos anymore. Every. Single. Video. is a tutorial with them advertising the entire time. You think about it, Park Tool - like what do they actually do? It was smart. They made a bunch of tools for bicycles, then made tutorials on things people would know, all while advertising their tools. That's the real purpose of ParkTool's tutorial.
Thanks a ton RJ
It's been awhile since I've worked on a BMX bike (been working on mountain bikes and road bikes for past 7 years), and I love the old school style cranks! I don't feel like I'm going to snap them off when I'm cornering, or even at the dirt jumps!
So thank you much for the video... It was a great refresher!
Finally someone not doing this on a mountain bike.
My dad thought me this back when I was younger and i still keep taking apart old bikes to build nicer bikes
You’re on a roll for my bmx restoration! I took the crank arm off but decided not to pull the gear completely off, I guess there’s not real reason to if the whole things cleans up nice. Thanks for sharing! Bike shop got the races out for me and gave me new hardware for my 88 restoration, need to paint this weekend!
Fantastic video! Clear, concise commentary and zero waffle. Good camera work too. You gave me the confidence to order a new bearing set - good as new! Thanks, liked and subscribed.
Helped me a lot, no mechanics want to work on bmx bikes in Colorado so I’m learning all of it myself. Thank you !
so clear and simple, amazing, i have the same old system now i will take your video as a guideline to overhaul my bike's bottom bracket.
I'm so glad you make bike vids!
I found an old school 82’ SE Racing Mini-Ripper, 92’ Robinson Pro and a 82’ RaceInc RA5 in my father in law’s garage. With new (old but new) bottom brackets. Thank you for the video!
Brilliant tutorial RJ! All my questions answered. Thanks so much 😊
Cheers RJ, this helped me with my first rebuild of a Raleigh TAP .
To all those people with negative comments... Just because you have an opinion it doesn't mean its right..
Exactly what I needed for my kids 16 bike. Thanks!!
Thanks for this video it is always a great help to me! 💯
Thanks man you/ your videos are so helpful. Thanks to you and a couple of other people(mainly you) I was able to take apart my first bmx, custom paint it, and put it back together with very few problems
Same here, I converted the whole bike from an abandoned Walmart kids bike to a "pro" BMX bike you would find at any bike shop
[Blank ] how pro can it be? Being a Walmart bike. Even with nice parts those frames are garbage.
Thank you, very informative. Greetings from Oceanside, California
Super simple. I've never seen it done with official bike tools before. Great!
Thank you for this very useful information. I'm currently cleaning the bearings and replacing the chainring on my Dyno Roadmaster and this vidieo was very handy. Thanks!
Your definitely my favorite bikel mechanic to watch !!!the way that your tutorials go through everything makes it very simple at times laugh out loud but otherwise yeah you're my favorite
thanks man this sprocket matches with my bmx.Habe searched for lots of vids but this helped me alot...THANKS
Great video and description while fixing it. Thumbs up.
Thanks R J great video helped me put my bike back together
Thanks mate great video .! You just helped me put a crank together..!
The more I watch RJ the more I like your channel .
An American crankset another name for it is a one piece crank aka Ashtabula
It looks like the rear wheel of that BMX is a 48 spoke wheel.
You mentioned your talent is to disassemble and reassemble any mechanical systems but also the way you present the show ..
I'm an old school bike mechanic and I enjoy wheel building the most:-)
I would like to give you a heads up of good quality tools made by cyclus tools based in Germany..
I recently purchased a bottom bracket thread chasing tool for BSA 1.37 inches by 24 threads and facing tool all under 500 Canadian dollars about 400 USD.. Just for my home hobby shop:-) I also like Park Tool but there are other great European and Taiwanese toolmakers for bicycle mechs.
Thx
Damian.
damian33dc I too work on bmx bikes of all kinds I prefer headset and bb work the most tho
RJ your videos are great, respect due.
Thanks man this vid helped me as i am rebuilding a vintage BMX that was in pieces shows me I need some bike tools like yours though

Helpful video.. Thanks a million for sharing.
Great Video R.J.... Thank you.
Always a BIG help!
Thanks for info on counterclockwise to remove bearing nut holding the chain wheel. I would have thought that was clockwise to loosen.
Dude your like the dad i never had .....ineed some taperd bearings for an old school gt 20" help .. .thanks j debella
My nephew asked me for help on this exact issue today, it rained all day so we could not do it and got pushed for tomorrow, I had no idea of how to do it ... Now I do, Thank you.
Great video. I didn't know the crankset could be stripped to the bones like that!
That was really helpful. Thanks alot.
Thanks a lot, I clearly didn't know how to take out the big gear sheet like
Tnx for the video. Good job.
Cheers. Got it sorted out. Thank you 🙏 very much . Scott y
Great video, thank you!
Thank you very useful video
Best vid for me. Mine is a Diamondback Viper from 98
I've seen this style of crank on Apollo Mountain bikes (I think it's a UK only brand?) A friend mine kept killing bearings because he kept riding the bike with a loose crank, eventually it bent the crank and warped the bottom bracket barrel writing off the frame.
So if you notice an significant play in your bottom bracket get it fixed as soon as possible as it can damage the bottom bracket barrel/tube.
Groovy guy 🙋💯 thanks 👍
this guy is good hes helped me in fixing my mtb saved me money thanks rj from belfast northern ireland
still having trouble with fixing brakes iv doon it all but no so have to leave in shop
What is the issue with the brakes?
RJ The Bike Guy
hi rj they r real loose u can pull them right in. but iv doon the wee screws on each side of the brakes but no i think the barrel adjusters r broke on booth sides
Then you might need to just replace the brakes then.
RJ The Bike Guy
just got them fixed looked at more of ur vids ta rj
RJ The Bike Guy dude how did u get that bike I always wanted that when I was a kid
Very thorough. Legend
Thank you for the video.
I'd love to see a video of all the bikes you own; would be pretty interesting. We never see the fate of all the bikes you show haha :)
very nice job. thank you very helpful.
Thanks so much this video helped me so much!!!!
really nice video I really enjoy it
Omg thank you! For not even trying. A guy in my area was giving a free old bmx bike wich we had no idea what it was but it had a big T logo wich I remember seeing somewhere & looked like it had another letter behind it possibly. I searched for days & gave up & while watching this video for the second time I noticed that logo on the sprocket of ur bike & then BINGO!! TREK BMX!! Shitcheah!
cheers got crank to adjust bmx wondered how it came a part :)
thanks for the help saved my bmx
Excellent video! ....I would love to get rid of those cages and get the benefits of loose bearings. Those are 5/16inch bearings aren't they? I notice there are nine in cage. How many would you recommend I use when ditching the cages? Thank you for your time and kind attention. Cheers!
Useful... now to do it myself.
This made my day
Thanks. Seems simple enough. It helps being mechanically inclined for things like this. If I can work on cars then surely I can work on bikes!
This Sunday’s Morning Project!
lol good video.... helped me out... if I had tools like that I probably would've went a little quicker....
good vid helped me a lot tyty
thank you Bike guy RJ;
just want a durable bottom bracket for an all aluminium MTB!
Sweet... Good vid
same, Saved my latest Proyect. Thompson Bottom Bracket are just a Nightmare :P
Thank you great explanation! Could you replace the caged bearing sets with loose bearing so as to have More bearings carry the load per side? I understand it would be tricky NOT to have the loose bearings fall out as installing the crank but grease would hold them in place. Thank you.
Probably. I haven't done it on a one piece crank. I have done it on 3 piece cranks. ruclips.net/video/BNfRD4ETDL0/видео.html
thank u u saved me a lot of money
Many Thanks!
Is there a way to upgrade this setup to the modern ones or do I have to reuse all of my old parts. I was given a bike yesterday that uses this setup but it was disassembled probably 25 years ago so some parts are missing. Also much of the bike has been laying in a pile of bike parts to other bikes so I don't know exactly what is for what
Thanks for that
very helpful
Hi RJ The Bike Guy so good you teach nice video dont have dislike
this video save for MT my old rigid mountain bike, tho I have no any kind of wrench you got there sir. moreover here in small port town mostly bike shop/repair using a large pipe wrench as they got no specialized wrench. and to remove/reinstall every part that had hole on it or to cut off chain or remove/reinstall threaded rear cassette they using brute force. using a mallet/hammer and a dull chisel/ a dull nail. sound stupid, but it's works. so what dya think sir? should i adopt it too as 'How to MT Bikes in Hack/wrong way' ?
thanks :)
thanks so much
Thanks !
I hate how people hate on your videos you have helped me fully restore a J.C Higgins bike from 1953 cheers mate also my cousins mongoose bmx bike has rear v brakes and they stick bad could you do a video or comment on this with some tips to help thanks in advance
+Isaiah Lewis You need to isolate the issue. Is it the cable or the brakes themselves. Disconnect the cable from the brakes. Are the still stick? If not, replace the cable. If yes, then clean and lube brake pivot points.
Thanks man I got it fixed it was the cable
Cool!
I see a lot of these iny shop. 2 things. First, the keud washer on the non drive side has a tab that indexes in the keyway slot on the crank. They wear oit and turn. Not supposed to. 2nd, Every one Ive done required removing both cups. Crank would come out otherwise. But, if you are gona disassemble them, do it 100%. Oh, put the bearing ring in your palm and pit a dollop of grea on it and push/turn the bearing to force grease in the bearing. Ball side up in your palm.
Cool
When refurbishing one piece cranks on bmx bikes I always replace the bearing cups because most bmx bikes take alot of abuse and often times the bearing cups will be warped
Thanks bro
Just bought a mongoose mode 180 for $5, it’s in good condition and after removing all the stickers, reflectors, and breaks it looks like a real decent BMX bike, one disappointing thing is it has one price cranks but can’t complain for $5 but yeah need to tighten the bottom bracket.
5$ where the fuck did you get a 5$ bmx
BAsalcrOwn FTW on letgo, the guy didn’t want it, also I had to drive for 15 minutes there and back.
It work
Great video, love all of your videos but one question! Why put grease on the pedal/crank arm thread? Wouldn’t you wanna put anti seize lubricant or something of that fashion there instead?
In BMX grease prevents seizing and rust and is really cheap to get a lot
Tnx alot
It's always better to replace questionable parts. Sometimes though, a replacement either isn't in the budget or isn't readily available. Careful use of a center punch on a well supported washer can extrude the key far enough to restore the locking function.
Here!here! all video
Hey RJ, are you going to make follow up videos on fixing this bmx that would be awesome
Yeah, I hope to get a few more videos out of this bike. I am currently working on overhauling the rear hub.
Tanks bro..
Saved me, I was about to mess things up.
What kind of bottom brackets are compatible with the shell type shown in video??
Hello RJ. I would like to know how to replace the chain rings for this type of crank. My S crank has 2 chain rings inside of them.
Then it's different than this. I can't tell you without work on your crank.
If you watch it x2 speed it sounds like he is being threatened to fix the bike 1:17 lol
Fidel Ortega how did you figure this out
Thx this helped
Helped me build the confidence that I wasn't going to screw up something.
