- I Wanna be in the Cavalry - Corb Lund (Cover) by Seth Staton Watkins
When I first posted my quick one minute TikTok of this song, I had no idea it would be so popular. Corb Lund deserves all the credit for this one, but I couldn't refuse the clamor to make a full cover. So here it is! I hope you like it!
The somber end reminded me of the scene featured in the video from the 2011 film "War Horse" and I think it is a fitting addition to this video (better then looking at my face the whole time!). The gallant solider, riding high on his steed into battle is a image we see time and time again in epic display on the big screen and I think this song only elevates the emotion of such a scene. Brave soldiers all, lost but not forgotten. And I know I'm late, but happy Memorial Day weekend as well.
If you like the video, feel free to leave a like, comment, and subscribe for more!

My Great Grandfather was in the US Cavalry in Nicaragua from 1930-1934 and he said there was something about a Cavalry attack that made everything around you stop as if the world had come to a halt except for you and your mount and the troopers around you.
I can imagine. 10,000 odd dudes on horses screaming their lungs out and firing pistols.
By cavalry do u mean tank divisions? Cuz i thought most cavalry unit got dispersed after ww1
@@timmycho3191 no he was in horse mounted Cavalry, in Nicaragua all Cavalry units were horse mounted because tanks were too slow and cumbersome for the jungles and mountains of Central America. The US officially removed horses from "Cavalry" service in two acts of military order once in 1937 and again in 1942.

I love how this song fits both a Southern U.S. accent and an Irish/Scottish accent. The song was written like an old fashioned western song but at the same time, sounds so good when put into a shanty type format, like this gentleman has done.
When you think about it the majority of southerners originated mostly from those areas so the southern accent & alot of the stories & stuff evolved & mixed from there through the generations. Its amazing how much has both changed & stayed the same
Becuse the southern accent is mostly Scottish and Irish decent. They came in New York yes! But alot of Irish and Scottish went south. There's a town in south Carolina that still speaks a very rare dialect of Scottish there's only like 20 of them left.
@@OoMistiqueoO Thats because Country and it descendants are forms of Folk music, it's American Folk music when you get down to brass tacks
And Corb’s Canadian accent.
I heard a linguistic professor say that if you want to hear the actual accent of upper class British people from the 18/1900s that the area I'm from south western NC and North Western SC is about as close as you can get. The people here are ll decended from English/Irish/Scottish along with the fact that the area was so isolated that the accent pretty much didn't change for hundreds of years.
On a side note, English people doi g the southern accents in movies always seems to work very well, and southern people doing the English accent, because of the similarities.
I have to admit I was not expecting a cover of this but I approve heartily

Just in case you want to sing along!!
I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
I wanna good steed under me like my forefathers before
I wanna good mount when the bugle sounds and I hear the cannons' roar
I wanna be in the cavalry if they send me off to war
I wanna horse in the volunteer force that's riding forth at dawn
Please save for me some gallantry that will echo when I'm gone
I beg of you sarge let me lead the charge when the battle lines are drawn
Lemme at least leave a good hoof beat they'll remember loud and long
I'd not a good foot soldier make, I'd be sour and slow at march
And I'd be sick on a navy ship, and the sea would leave me parched
But I'll be first in line if they'll let me ride, by god, you'll see my starch
Lope back o'er the heath with the laurel wreath underneath that vict'ry arch
Let me earn my spurs in the battle's blur where the day is lost or won
I'll wield my lance as the ponies dance and the blackguards fire their guns
A sabre keen, and a saddle carbine and an army Remington
Where the hot lead screams with the cold, cold steel let me be a cav'lryman
Let 'em play their flutes and stirrup my boots and place them back to front
For I won't be back on the rider-less black (jack) and I'm finished in my hunt
I wanna be in the cavalry if I must go off to war
I wanna be in the cavalry, but I won't ride home no more
Thank you!!!

Thanks
This was the song that made me find him, and honestly. I'm glad to find him, cause his voice is soo good!
Right!!!!

You are the only band I've found that has covered this song this well. I have known the song for years - I served 25 years as a US Army Cavalry officer. My son loves this tune and remembers it from his earliest years. Thank you for a superb rendition. Consider doing the reprise, from the same album. It really puts it in context.
Definitely!
ok the music is obviously great, but.... I've been thinking about this scene in War Horse, and while I understand what the film makers were trying to show the audience with the cavalry charge being decimated by machine gun fire, the Germans would never have had that many machine guns lined up in one spot that early in the war. The "War of Movement" of the Summer and Fall of 1914 lasted a good bit of time, but receives almost no scholarly or popular attention when it comes to studies of The Great War
I find it fascinating that the cavalry charge died as a concept time and time again. Longbows killed the cavalry, the advent of firearms killed cavalry charges the advent of pike-squares killed the cavalry charge, the advent of non-plug bayonets killed the cavalry charge and so did machine-guns, tanks and so on and so on. Horse cavalry might be dead now but air-born cavalry in helicopters, as well as mechanized cavalry are still real. We still have our armored knights standing on the defense or charging though the enemy line, we have our cavalry raids and our fighting dragoons.
The form changes but the spirit does not.
ruclips.net/video/BiMUOuYUy1w/видео.html if you haven't heard it before, Corb sung about this idea on the same album. Great song
I'm not a historian but my understanding is that the cavalry has pretty much always been good at skirmishing and exploitation (like the raid on the camp in the video). however, the heavy cavalry charging into the main lines has only been viable on occasion depending on how the technologies stack up on the battlefield.
But wait... some policemen still ride horses so it's not completely gone?
Cavalry was always supposed to be an exploitation weapon. All it takes is a bunch of people stood close together with pointy sticks to see off a cavalry charge.

I was a Cavalry Scout for 9 years. The first time I heard this song was as a drunk 20-year old at my first regimental ball, and I thought it was the best song I'd ever heard. The second time I heard it was at 0430 on a December morning standing in formation in running shorts waiting for a squadron run. I did not enjoy it the second time. This reminds me of the first time I heard it.

I think it was an italian cavalry unit that charged russian lines in WW2. A German officer watched it and after the cavalry won went to the italians and said "That was very brave ... but we don´t do this anymore. Please, never do this again!"

As a veteran myself I feel this greatly encaptures the spirit of young men going to war. Full of hope and desire to prove themselves and be the best, and as the song goes on and becomes more somber, in my mind represents the loss of innocence as those young men no romanticize war but realize the somber nature of it all
Well said, thank you

Its interesting that Cavalry was one of the most important branches in a states military for centuries. Cavalery led charges and breeched enemy lines and a Cavalry charge could break the enemy formation. But with the advancement in firearm technology in the 19th Century Cavalry lost its use more and more. With the invention of the Maxim Gun the Days of cavalry charges were over.
We still charge today, you just need to do it at the right time.
