Exactly what I was going to comment. A guy at a fancy outdoor pond/koi store told me exactly that, plus uv filter is golden. I haven't changed the uv bulb in a couple years, ouch. I've found recently changing the pond filter (55 gal drum) a couple times the last 3 weeks, has the water crystal clear.
I'd direct you toward considering the actual path that the water must flow. Water is coming in from the walls of the bucket, so your layers should be concentric, not horizontally layered. Your water enters directly into your bioballs and leaves, not moving much through any other media at all. It will always follow the path of least resistance.
🤔 the sponge was actually better. It trapped much and housed beneficial bacteria. This new filter should have at least 6” of sponge in it. This design is rent so good. Too much bypass and little mechanical or bacterial filtration.
Diy filters is like a whole other hobby of mine, so fun.
Not a bad build. I would replace the bioballs with lava rock. More surface area. Just rinse the lava rocks well.

I usally use a fine clean sand as my top filter...and i found the filtered water is so clear.
Whats the pump you used? I have a harbor freight near me and i need to pick one up
Good work
Dang, i need one of those
Pumps probably running dry if you don't have enough water getting to it fast enough holes need to be bigger

I use the DIY trash can pond filter by SC fishkeeping, works well but yours is hidden!! Wow
Bog filter.
I like it Picasso
You pump is going to choke soon and die with all the pressure you have created all around it. Not a good DIY plan
still working great, this vids from 2 years ago. :)
