Diy filters is like a whole other hobby of mine, so fun.
I usally use a fine clean sand as my top filter...and i found the filtered water is so clear.
Not a bad build. I would replace the bioballs with lava rock. More surface area. Just rinse the lava rocks well.

Pumps probably running dry if you don't have enough water getting to it fast enough holes need to be bigger
I use the DIY trash can pond filter by SC fishkeeping, works well but yours is hidden!! Wow

You pump is going to choke soon and die with all the pressure you have created all around it. Not a good DIY plan
