only 69 out of 195 countries allow for a psn account. helldivers was sold in 190 countries and people played from those countries with no issues for months. on june 4th players from all but 69 countries will lose the ability to play helldivers 2 because of sony's greed.
For all of those saying to "Just make a PSN account bro." If you've been playing Helldivers 2 and do not live in one of these listed countries you cannot make a PSN account. Choosing a country you do not live in is a violation of Sony's TOS and could lead to account termination. - Pirate Software

Country I live in swithed to Euro on 1st of January 2023. Playstation store had our old currency on store 'till 13th of Semptember! That's just one of many issues with Sony
I have an old psn account but no way I am connecting it to my steam just to play a game I only have on steam. If they do push this through I'll be done with the game. I mean that is srsly messed up. If it was a sony game made by sony then it might be annoying but okay that's no different then COD nowadays. But to demand ppl sign up so you can collect their data and report them over wrong think?
I'll agree that is a problem. I'm sure they'll need to reverse the policy. Sony just has no idea how to handle a game with this many players and this many countries. Some exec was just like, "I can't see my Sony numbers make them join" but didn't actually think about the ramifications of that.
While it really means nothing to me in the personal sense, there are so many Helldivers who live in countries that cannot legally get a PSN account.

It's only due to technical issues at launch that they suspended it...

If your country says its illegal to jaywalk but nothing happens when you do until one day some cop fines you for doing it you cant really say yeah you changed the rules so i dont want to pay the fine... In this case you can just stop playing the game the refunds should go to ppl from countries where PSN accounts arent allowed
For Everyone wanting the most important answer to all this : CM team revealed that the Helldiver IP (game rights and everything related) is actually owned by Sony and NOT ArrowHead, meaning they can, if they want, make every decision possible without consulting AH before, since they own the game rights, licence, etc.
Making mandatory to have the PSN account linked is nothing for safety, but just to technically having more people in their system and bump their numbers of players, accounts, data etc.
Fun fact : on their own website, Sony actually says that having a PSN account is NOT an obligation to play those games, but they make it an obligation for Helldivers 2 ? Make it make sense

Real talk: they didn’t expect HD2 to be huge so they didn’t require the account. Now that it’s blown up the corporate greed and entitlement has popped off. If they’d known how big the game was going to get they’d have required it from the beginning.
If you always just assume that major corporations are run by undead ghouls who feed on human suffering and then predict their behavior accordingly you’ll usually be right.
You've got it backwards, they required it initially but suspended that requirement when it got super popular because their servers couldn't keep up with all the new players trying to get on HD2.
Requiring the link still sucks but this is jot the reason.

@@munchkingod6 It is Sony, yes. But regardless, this was briefly required on day 1 and they suspended it because the PSN site was being overrun. I remember getting a bunch of timeouts while trying to recover my old PSN account before I realized the game would just let me in without it.

I was in a mission with a random. I accidentally killed him and apologized. He waited until a funny, calm moment and punched me off a cliff. It was completely unexpected but I thought it was hilarious. We spent the rest of the mission sneakily punching each other. I loved it, but I know some people would hate it.
Would Sony automatically ban us both? We had fun, even though what we did could easily be seen as "griefing."

I accidentally killed someone one game, and I wanted to make it up with a hug at the end. He stared at me, shook his head, and fires an airbrush at his feet deleting both of us. Sacrificing a mission success for a funny laugh is the reason this game is awesome.
I play pc for a reason. Steam is a separate platform for a reason. I don’t play console because I built my pc to play higher graphics games and different games they don’t have at all. It’s such a sad waist to see what will happen from all this just because of corporate garbage. Miss the old days of gaming when games were for fun not data and cash grabs.

While this came down from Sony, Arrowhead really looks bad to the Steam players now. More so after the CEO's (in)famous reply about how AH and not Sony has control over Hell Divers 2. Shame as it was going really well there for a few months, ignoring the (game) bugs.

That's a weird thing to say since Sony literally owns the Helldivers IP so Sony can do what they want with Helldivers and has the majority power to do it unless they made some kind of agreement which is impossible since Sony would still have a major say being the owner of the IP .-.

Sony hired arrowhead in 2014 to make helldivers, and SIGNED a very specefic contract about the helldivers ip in where arrowhead gets to make all creative decisions and changes to said IP. This is a server thing, which is the one thing Sony provides as part of the deal, so its under thier power.
Dropped this game a month ago from their shitty updates making the game unplayable. Now seeing it requires a pan account I'm gonna try to get a refund. AH and Sony failed this game tbh

Sony sees the massive player numbers on steam and thinks about padding their shitty PSN user numbers to look better to the investors. If PSN was the requirement from the start, which it was, the game shouldn't be available in those country to begin with. I fucking hate the corporate idiots who can't see past the short term gains and ruin it.

My negative review has 416.7 hours at the time of review which was also the time of uninstall. This is not a coincidence that it came right after the patent for their biometric reading AI bully hunter program. I'm done trying to enjoy the game in spite of the developers and publisher. I got my moneys worth and I'm fine with moving on.

I submit a refunding request with 200 hours + pf gaming. I know they will not refund me. Now, it's not about winning or loosing, it's about PUNCHING those cheap bastard back.

Even after 14 days/2 hours you can refund a game on Steam using the very same mechanism. You just have to explain why you still demand a refund and if it's plausible/understandable, they often do indeed grant the request. Like in this case, if you live in a country PSN doesn't support, you're very likely to get a refund IMO.
I tried to refund Star Wars Battlefront Classic because their Splitscreen functionality has been broken since launch. I played for about three hours one day trying to get it to work via Remote Play.
They denied my refund. GL getting refunds.
Sony pretty much voided the requirement to have a PSN account linked by putting in a 'skip' button that you only need to press once when you first launch the Steam version. Also, Steam's equally at fault here, the blurbs warning players that the game itself will require a third party account are placed below the buy button and require the user to actively scroll down and hunt them down and there is no warning shown during the buy process for the game that it will require a third party account. Steam really needs to place those warnings front and center above the buy buttons to ensure that their user base sees them before they buy into the game.

Technically yeah, i think Steam allows refunds of games that revoke your access if you do not create a third party account, in this case, create and link PSN account. Though i dont think it can be done through automated refunds system but rather through steam support.

I know it's not relevant to the topic but i was able to refund Cyberpunk 2077 after 8 hours of playtime by sending screenshots of it literally crashing my whole pc and restarting it to Steam Support. So maybe if we find a correct rule about access to games it can be done but it's highly unlikely. Let's wait and see if Pirate Software gets his refund

The issue with vpns is that some anti cheat software will not let you run the game with a VPN on.
Problem is that there is always the risk of a ban since their ToS is quite explicit when it comes to this.

I'm torn, I want it known that I believe in Arrowhead that they can make this game better and don't want to tarnish that but I also want Sony to know this is not okay. I may change my review to negative in solidarity to those that can't play because of this change by Sony specifically.
Leave a negative review, as in click the negative button, but in the description, make it known the recent desicions of Sony are why you are leaving a negative review, not bc of the game itself.

Helldivers had a good run, I guess. It was a lot of fun.
Kernel level anticheat and now Sony Ai software. I'm starting to feel like there is no difference between China and the rest of the world. Scratch that China was just the first to do it.
Many governments and businesses love communism at the end of the day. It serves to benefit them, after all, so it makes sense. It's too bad it has to slowly creep its way into simple hobbies like gaming.
Sony is in California now they've basically always pushed this.
The difference is china's ideas. They think controlling welfare and economy by brute force works out in the long run. (SPOILER ALERT, it dosent) They are paying the price for it now in terms of infrastructure collapse and having more males than females on a large scale due to thier flip floping family law for the past 30 years.
The rest of the world is smart enough to know diffrent ways of manipulation that are far more effective at getting people to do what you want them to do. It might be slower and take more time,but it works. But all of it is becoming an increasingly transparent house of cards that's going to lead to a crash or another ,more worldwide great depression.

I made my decision to buy the game based on all the user content on RUclips. So I hopped on steam, scrolled down and bought the game. I guess its my fault I didn't see that single line of text on the side of the page that said the game was going to get taken from me in two months. Literally the first instance of the PSN account being required that I've seen was last night with that update notice. Wasn't in the EULA, not referenced at all in-game. Just 5 seconds as a side blurb on the purchase page between other same-color notifications.
Fuck Sony.

I pre-ordered the game knowing fully well it required a psn account, and had a morally ambiguous anti-cheat.
While I absolutely despise these requirements, this is 50% your own fault.
I don't play Helldivers 2, but I can understand how that would happen. I just went to the product page in my steam client and I need to browse down, beyond the add to cart button and also all the update notes to find the note of needing a third-party account on the right. The account note doesn't really stand out from the other notes either, it's all written low contrast yellow on yellow and it's mostly the white eula link standing out. You can buy the product without seeing the area of the page with the account requirement.
Meanwhile the correct place (if you actually want customers to be aware) to notify for that is instead occupied by a warning saying that only jp users get japanese voices and interface. The area above the add to cart button.
@@nope-qi8zx Well if he is in one of the 121 countries that Helldivers 2 was sold in but that don't also have PSN access then it is 100% Arrowhead and Sony's fault, which from the OP it does sound to be the case.

The symbolism on some of the early level cape cosmetics all makes sense now.
The best guess we have so far is that Sony is doing this for two reasons. The first one is pretty obvious based on what they said, which is they want the ability to bad people directly, rather than having to rely on Steam. The second reason is a little less obvious until someone says it out loud to you. They want the metrics on how many people are signed up to PSN. By doing this, they potentially add literally millions of people to the PSN, which would look absolutely incredible in terms of corporate performance metrics for their investors. Apparently they don't care about long-term profits, and only want short-term metrics. I bet they wouldn't have ever bothered to try to get people to sign up for PSN if the game performed within regular metrics. When it popped off, they saw the potential to milk this game from every orifice.

I was more interested in saying why Sony is pushing for it now. You'd assume that they'd at least make sure that all the bugs with crosssplay, the friend's list, and most other issues were resolved before going forward with the PSN account requirement. I'm pretty sure that the success of the game, and the end of the fiscal quarter is making Sony want to get their numbers nice and pretty, so they're going to push this through at an accelerated pace. If the number of purchases for Helldivers 2 was not as spectacular, I'd bet that they would have waited for these fixes, and may not have even bothered if the number of active players fell below a certain point by the time it was fixed.

I linked my steam account to my PSN Day 1 because the whole damn reason I bought the game was to play with friends on PS5 but we never could due with the friends list and what not. I bought the Super Citizen version late February 2024 and I rarely pay that much for a digital license for a game. I have over 160 hours in the game if this change is not reverted... I'm going to request a refund for the game out of principle as what about the people who can't create PSN accounts? That's messed up man, messed up.
as someone on ps5, this doesn’t affect me, (and not too worried about data leaks since i only use gift cards to buy stuff, no debit card on my account) but this does suck for people in countries who don’t have psn. they just need to make it so the account linking is only for cross play and that’s it, or at least grandfather in the people who have already purchased the game.

I'm pretty sure this could very well become a legal issue for them. They cannot revoke your access to the game after you bought it by adding new terms that you have to accept in order to keep playing. Where I live I can link my account to PSN but I really wont. After 300 hours I'm a bit bored of the game anyway.

Great video, really cleared things up for me. I thought at first that it was just that you could not use Sony's online service in those countries. The fact that you CAN make an account in those countries but CAN'T make one without breaking their terms of service and risking your account getting banned is completely neglectful and ruthless.
That is what I don't understand. Never have I experienced having to submit to another platform's concerns. If Sony is having security issues, they could force (I believe these things usually are optional but advertised security measures) their customers to go through two-factor accounts, link accounts across platforms, etc.
Never has it been a concern of another platform consumers (steam users in this case) to partake in security measures by another platform. That is an issue governed through developers to implement correct usages of API keys, and fulfilling a certain code security measurement when their code is inspected.
The only instances I have experienced linking across platforms (optional linking) are for rewards or benefits such as ease of account creation/login, unified game account progression across platforms, etc.

Fun fact, not sure if this has been realized but Sony changed their FAQ to reflect that some games may require account linking, according to the wayback machine, as late as March 29th it said it was optional
The funny thing is, there is no way to tell if you already linked the PSN and Steam account. Neither in my Steam Account, nor in the PSN Account i have.

The problem was that the PSN link page only appeared once for me and you get the option to SKIP.
I live in a country that is unsupported by PSN so I cannot even create a PSN account without submitting false information.
So when I saw the SKIP option 3 months ago, I did SKIP. And I have been playing ever since with 265 hours under my Steam account, without being prompted to link to a PSN account, giving me the illusion it was never a hard requirement.
Until now.
They probably want to roll this out before they add the pride capes and armors.

It is very possible. People have gotten their email accounts breached due to PSN.

I do have a PSN account, it was for my Vita years back. Not that it matters right now because Sony's network server is borked right now, won't connect. Never mind I just found out apparently I changed my password in February. The link was in my Spam folder. Yeah my account got hacked they probably did things that got them banned. So PSN banned my account with their sub-par support in trying to get that unbanned it probably won't happen so goodbye Helldivers 2.

Another old-timer! Yes indeed, ever since Verant Interactive/989 Studios sold EverQuest to Sony, the game did nothing but go downhill, and FAST.
After they'd succeeded in destroying the profitability of their purchase, they then abandoned it and it got sold through a chain of even less worthy entities until now it's only on life support. The most popular servers are those that restart with Classic EQ and, once they get up to the Planes of Power expansion, the player base drops off a cliff until the next TLP opens; all so we can have a hit off that precious nostalgia hookah pipe.
I started in 1999 with my twin brother, and though he's since passed away, I still play to this day just for the memories; but make no mistake, the heart quit beating in that game back in the early 2000s.

One additional weird aspect to this, with regards to certain countries not being able to sign up for PSN, is that Sony's TOS, as it works in practice, might technically violate EU law here?
The EU has a legal principle of "content portability", which basically states that if someone buys online content in one member state, they should not be limited from using it in other member states, and the product they have access to there should be the same. It's primarily applied to streaming services and books and such, but also applies to digital games.
So, basically, if someone buys Helldivers in Germany and signs up for PSN, then they should be able to move to Lithuania and keep playing their game. But Sony's TOS seems to imply that, since you can't register a PSN account from Lithuania, and you can't move your account, then they would legally claim the right to ban you from the game in this case.
In practice though, I am 99% sure that Sony just expects people to lie about their country at sign-up, and that they will not ban people over it (unless you're doing something genuinely disruptive or buying stuff with the wrong region's prices on the Playstation Store, or whatever). I knew a guy from the baltics, and gamers there have basically done this since forever (Since Sony sells PlayStation consoles there - officially, from their own branded stores, not through shady resellers either - And you have needed to register a PSN account to use one of these since the PS3).
But the fact that they technically could ban you for it, they haven't fixed this weird legal clusterfuck over the last decades, and that they're basically nudging people to break the terms they're agreeing to, even just to agree to them in the first place, is... weird.

If you got it on Steam, the 14 days/2 hours refund time is for AUTOMATIC refunds. You can still get a refund through Steam Support after the automatic refund window has passed. Open a ticket and explain the situation to them in a professional manner (this means not emotionally charged) and why you're refunding the game. You'd be eligible for a refund more times than not.

This isn't even cooperate greed, it's just idiotic. You alienate about 25% of your player base and expect to profit from that, the math just doesn't add up. Hopefully they realize this but I fear it's already too late and a lot of players won't come back to this game even if they roll back the psn account bs.
I remember a million years ago when Skyrim came out the first time, I was baffled that I had to make a Steam account to play the game, Angry even.
The real take away from this is, i feel bad for the people who can't play anymore.
The required additions needed to make an account outside the states is also nuts. Worth looking into. Sony wants the data. They're just jerks.
The requirement to link accounts was there from the very start, but it was skippable at launch and most people did just that. There was no mention of any technical issues or a grace period, though.
The biggest issue however is the fact that PSN accounts are not available in many countries. People could still buy it on Steam though. If a PSN account is required but not available to those concerned, why was the game still being sold there? Unless the remove that requirement for the countries that are affected by this problem, HD2 will lose a large amount of players on June 4th.
Just changed my review to negative even though I have my account linked, hopefully sony can be convinced to stop with this bs.

Earth Defense Force 6 will be out in July. It’s where Helldiver 2 got their inspiration from. It’s also way more bombastic than Helldiver 2.

"Divers were looking for an excuse to quit" You honestly really hit the nail on the head and it just shows how this basically happened at the worst possible time. If it had been implemented from the start it would have been annoying and might've put a damper on the game's prospects, but it would just be how it is. If it was happening now and Arrowhead was flying high with a great reputation, the ire would still be there but mostly aimed at Sony. Instead, Arrowhead is already under a lot of flak for their last few balance changes and then Sony comes in like a pre-patch Scorcher Hulk to just incinerate the momentum the game was enjoying.
It's really just a bummer though since I was really enjoying this game warts and all, and it was a rare game where I actually had a decently consistent friend group to play with. But now one of my friends who lives in Vietnam won't even be able to play it without making a fake PSN account and the other said he's pretty much done with it after this PSN change. So thanks for the extra patrols Arrowhead, I guess I'll be experiencing them more often now since Sony's tomfoolery is basically making it so I'll be playing by myself.
