Been binge watching this channel recently. Not gonna lie, kind of making me want to quit my desk job and get into trades. Should probably start as a hobbyist though. All these tools aren't cheap 😂
I heard and saw the results of a "it's diesel so you don't need to worry about purging it", it was a Cat 777 tank, he was lucky that he got a few feet cut before it blew, still made everything round and therefore scrapped the tank, but didn't kill anyone.
Greg, my friend has a son who wants to be an apprentice.....he has tools and will travel.... I can give him good references,,,,he is only 70 years old.....but loves what you do......Paul
The fumes are what kill us , usually I will remove the caps on any fuel or hydraulic tank and if possible, I’ll leave them sit outside a day to help fume off whatever is in there, hydraulic and diesel tanks. Don’t typically explode from welding, but they can !we measure the oxygen level in the tank , no oxygen no boom. Gasoline tanks are to be treated differently ,gasoline fumes for quite some time. Sometimes I will stick the exhaust from a vacuum cleaner in a gas tank and let it run for two or three hours, and then I will probably put argon in it before I weld it, that’s how I was taught to do it, and I’ve never had a problem, never put water in a tank, thinking it can’t blow up, by putting water in the tank, you can condense the fumes to a small area and create a bomb, fuel tanks are dangerous, and not for everybody to weld on.
Peterbilt tank doesn’t need purging, your repair needs 3/16 “ plate matching where it’s cracked going down about 6” by 10” wide . Take fittings out before welding they can galled themselves when you take them out to redope . The reason weld broke was the Equiflow pipes going into tank move with the slosh of fuel, been bad set up from begging, worse since PacCar bought them out .. When tank crakes by seam drill ends grind crack weld grind flat take 3/16” 3003 Aluminum bend to shape 12” length at least 2” wider on each end of crack clamp in and weld .
Yea I just open them up too and refuse gas tank repairs but diesel like this is good quick cash usually. Fixed more tanks than I can remember. The oxygen monitor always a good idea. Whatever floats your boat and doesn’t blow you out the water!
I'm impressed how well your dogs are used to all sorts of shop noises! Grinders make a, well, grinding noise even to me, and dog ears are much more sensitive to high-pitched noise.
Был у нас пес, ноль реакции на шум. Но когда брали гриндер "болгарка", он сразу убегал из цеха, не любил искры. Сразу вставал, бежал к двери, бил ее лапой и на улицу. А на шум ему было наплевать
here in the northeast it's common for them to corrode holes where they mount, the repair is to 'band' the tank with a 5 or 6 inch wide strip around the circumference. As long as the vessel is 'open'-fuel cap off, plugs out-there is no need to purge them. All they do is smoke a little at best, diesel is pretty inert.
I see your two helpers on the floor there slack assin! Nice job 👍. I could tell you some stories of fuel.gas. tanks that went boom and propelled themselves across the floor 😄😃
What my dad did was run a car exhaust pipe in there and let the carbon monoxide fill it up and then he would weld it but again that was years ago love your videos be safe and have a great day Sam
Wouldn't the diamond wheel get gummed up with aluminum? Love the videos btw they're always entertaining and informative Edit: Nvm yeah it's the safer option
Great work! So If the tanks is purged with argon, the tiny bit of diesel on the tank walls cannot ignite due to no oxygen, making it safe to weld without having to wash out the tank?
I had to purge a 10,000 gallon gasoline tank to saw a hole big enough to shovle out the sludge. We used CO.2 I ran 2 200cu ft tanks then a 150 tank then sweated my but off
Question< someone brought me the same tank. Saddle wore on the tank and cracked horizontal three inches under the seam ,crack was 10 inches long and had fuel leak though it. I told him it was unrepairable . Your thoughts? Only thing that came to mind was a 14 X 14 patch? thanks
Did you ever try using nitrogen? I was gonna try it on my 6.0 ford oil pan. I used vacuum instead and it worked. I had cut out the bottom of may pan was cracked made a new pc to put in. I’ve been getting quite a few dump truck oil tanks like that due to cracks. Don’t wanna get nabbed by DOT. I’ve been slacking in my video making department with all my repairs lately.
Let me guess...it's out of a KW. At my last job every single truck we had developed cracks there. The company that repaired them for us would cut the end off and weld in a bracket to stabilize the standpipe to keep it from doing it again.
34 years ago a local diesel mechanic welded on a steel fuel tank. Blew the walls out of a 40by 40 steel building. The mechanic die 4 days later from his injuries.
What about a water tank?? Me and my better half had a job this weekend and it was our first tank. Not only did the weld crack, we had no idea about a possible explosion!?! Please help!!!
@@OFW I’m guessing the same couldn’t be done due to contamination of the weld on aluminum tanks? What’s the basic method? Lay a couple cold tacks to encapsulate the contamination until the leak stops, then clean and run hotter passes on top to seal it up?
@@ttargetss it could be done with fuel coming out. The weld most likely wouldn’t be as good. this is a better option and since the tank was already removed and drained for me this made the most sense.

So your "test" for argon... yes a flame will go out in argon, but what if the tank WASN'T fully purged yet... putting a flame to gasoline vapours coming out of a tank that may not have been purged of oxygen may not have been the best approach...
Love you stacks of coins. Aluminum can be difficult but you make it look absolutely beautiful and easy. Love his channel Greg.

You can get a Lincoln tombstone stick welder for 100$ used. I would recommend if you’re considering it

Thanks for showing/explaining the purge technique. Just curious how long that took to purge.
Probably about 5 minutes. But I let it go for 15 minutes.

I use Dry Ice (carbon dioxide) , much cheaper than Argon and I can get it at my local Publix super market.

Correct.
Executado com excelência 🙌🏼🙏🏼👏🏼💐🇧🇷🎖️🔑🎷🔥✅☕
Nice work. Can the purge like that also be used on a gasoline tank that is steel or aluminum?
Probably, but I will not ever weld on gasoline or propane tanks. It’s not worth the risk.

Do you think the original weld was too hot-leaving that line where the crack was? Nice bullet proof repair brother!
Could be. They seem to flex in that area too.
Well, if you do the flame test to early it might do exactly what you try to prevent...💥
Not with diesel.

If it was wore thin I would weld the crack then plate over that. Then pressure check it.
You should add what you charge your customers. that would be something no other channel does.
I thought about that, but out of respect for my customers I do not want to share prices.
🎉
Coffees on!! ;-)!!!
why dont you ever wipe the aluminum with IPA or some sort of fast dry anti oil such as acetone?
I usually use acetone.
Good job! What is the price range?I have the same issue with my fuel tank and just want to have an idea so I don’t get ripped off! Thanks.
I think I charged about $300

Ambidextrously good move.
Technically any gas that is inert and heavier than oxygen would work.

Could you fill the tank 3/4 full of water and use less gas? P.S. I'm not a welder.

Welding on a water tank? Should be no issues unless water is getting into your weld. Then it might affect the weld but it won’t explode.
😎👍😎
Didn’t you weld a fuel tank leak on a grader that was full and soaking the area even as you were welding?
Yes. On a scraper.
