It only feels affordable / cheap because we convert from SGD to MYR. My Malaysian relatives have said they actually think Singapore food is much more affordable. Example at a hawker; your salary is SGD2000 but a bowl of laksa only cost you $5~6, but if salary is MYR2000 and a bowl of laksa can cost up to RM9~12, that's expensive in the long run. 😥 (this just a comparison and my opinion using food, please don't come at me about other things like rental/petrol)
Exactly my point!! Johor prices increase a lot, local food is now 50-60% of SG prices despite the exchange rate. Exchange rate doesn't depict an accurate picture of the real purchasing power. Johoreans who dont work in SG are the ones suffering.
petrol is actually more expensive in MY compared to SG, when looking at the 97 and above grades. can't compare 95 and below because those are heavily subsidized by the MY govt.
Laksa is rm9? Woah at Selangor more specific in Shah Alam laksa are usually rm5-7 and rm9 if they are from a well known restaurant. Pretty expensive imo

Yes, you should compare how much the locals can get with RM100 and S$100 in Malaysia and Singapore respectively. We can probably get more out of $100 compared to RM100 for food in the respective countries. In Singapore cars and housing is expensive but transport and food is still quite affordable. Cannot use tourist $ to compare 😃
Johor prices are increasing to a point where typical local food now cost around 50-60% of what ull pay in SG, despite the exchange rate. Mainly due to pandemic & more Johoreans who work in SG, thus pushing inflation rate when they spend their income back home.

Actually if you are earning ringgit,their inflations is actually much higher. Even their subsidise petrol,is consider high for locals. See their a cup of coffee or tea price. You hardly get a 4 ringgit noodless or rice in their coffeeshop.
Notice a lot of Hipster cafes in Melaka when we were there a week ago.... Next time try their pork satay.....the marinade is savory instead of sweet...only can find in Melaka

RM 9 for a chendo is overly expensive. Should be around RM5~RM6 only in KL. Also you miss the portuguese food only in Malacca. Tourist area are famous for it markup price.

Things are way more expensive in Msia if we don't convert. I will always think of what SGD1 can buy vs RM1...Singaporeans and other tourists with stronger currencies will always say it's cheap..but it is expensive for the locals. Walking around their malls you see the displayed salaries of their restaurants hiring...you can roughly see their salary range vs SG.

Malaysia are no longer cheap anymore,just saw a video about durian in Malaysia is selling 98MYR per/kg= SGD 30++ by HK RUclipsr, the same type of durian at my house just selling SGD 15 per/kg, and don’t forget Singapore durian was imported from Malaysia yet cheaper.

Contrary to popular belief, Johor food is slightly worse than SG except Ramly burgers, students/working adults in Johor coming from other states like Negeri Sembilan where REAL Msia food is made, will agree. Any kedai mamak, the curry is often diluted. U want ur roti canai to come with meat? You pay extra which cost 2-3x the canai. In SG, you get the meat automatically for free upon request. Dont bother comparing mamak food, except for Nasi Kandar which is good. Seafood? Great atmosphere, fresh, but literally only Yeos seafood is good. Even if there's hawker centers, most of the owners arent even doing the cooking. Malay food spammed with so much salt especially the ones at coffee shop & bazaar. But the food court food especially hotplate etc has been great. Btw my review is only for indian n malay food. Johor is a great place to shop n relax. But food? Go to Negeri Sembilan.
But for Chinese food, you can go to any random chicken rice, char kway teow or wanton mee stall in JB and it will at least taste decent. In SG, you'll have to make the extra effort to travel and queue just to get an OK meal. And let's be real, nobody's going to JB for Indian or Malay food. Most of my Malaysian friends told me that if you compare apples to apples, Malaysia is more expensive. However, if you do a currency conversion, Singaporeans will all say that things in Malaysia's always cheaper. I don't think it's right to compare the 2 countries based on currency.

Malaysia is overated. It's nice if you're looking for a cheap getaway but try living there for an extended period of time. You get sick of it real fast. Everything is so far away and inconvenient. You'll definitely need a car to move around.
Hands down Malaysia wins: Better food, more diversity and at way more affordable prices. Plus the ambience, so many places, modern to vintage to instagramable to anything. I am a Dutch expat residing in KL with my Singaporean wife and the family comes over almost every 2 weekends to enjoy the food and shopping here. I never go to Singapore in return, why would I?
Frankly, there r v few places which t truly v low-cost now. Was just watching a RUclipsr 痒痒’s videos about his trips to Kazhakstan and Uzbekistan ~ the prices are on par with SG. Truly low-cost would be those village/countryside places but, they may not hv the mod cons Singaporeans are used to. We just have to accept that inflation has this global price-levelling effect.
Please let me recommend you Sou Omakase at Gardens Mall, Mid Valley if you haven’t yet tried. You will be shocked at their standard and price tags with your Sing dollar.

Malaysia is overated. It's nice if you're looking for a cheap getaway but try living there for an extended period of time. You get sick of it real fast. Everything is so far away and inconvenient. You'll definitely need a car to move around.
Hands down Malaysia wins: Better food, more diversity and at way more affordable prices. Plus the ambience, so many places, modern to vintage to instagramable to anything. I am a Dutch expat residing in KL with my Singaporean wife and the family comes over almost every 2 weekends to enjoy the food and shopping here. I never go to Singapore in return, why would I?

Frankly, there r v few places which t truly v low-cost now. Was just watching a RUclipsr 痒痒’s videos about his trips to Kazhakstan and Uzbekistan ~ the prices are on par with SG. Truly low-cost would be those village/countryside places but, they may not hv the mod cons Singaporeans are used to. We just have to accept that inflation has this global price-levelling effect.

Please let me recommend you Sou Omakase at Gardens Mall, Mid Valley if you haven’t yet tried. You will be shocked at their standard and price tags with your Sing dollar.

honestly the challenge should be MYR 100.00 not Sgd100.00 due to the exchange rates . You can definitely stretch further due to that. If I take MYR100.00 to eat how you had eat in Malaysia it will not be possible. That is how I see it.

Also it is tiring to hear the fishing village narrative, when Malacca Sultanate had a period of Golden Age thus attracting the Europeans conquest.
