  • Haematite ore is an oxide of iron. Iron in the ore can be determined using a standard solution of Potassium dichromate using potassium ferricyanide as an external indicator.
    Reagents required:
Standard Potassium dichromate solution: wighed salt of Potassium dichromate was taken in 250 ml volumetric flask and dissolved in distilled water and diluted to the mark, mixed and filled in the burette.
Ore solution was pipetted in a conical flask to which conc HCL (5-6 ml) was added and it was then heated on the hot plate before addition of Stanous chloride solution to it.The solution was added dropwise to the solution in hot condition till the yellow solution became colorless .
The flask was then cooled under tap water and a test tube of distilled water was added followed with the addition of Mercuric chlorideto (3-4 ml) reduce Fe(+3) to (+2)
The mercuric chloride removes stanous chloride by oxidising it into stannic chloride and itself gets reduced to mercurous chloride which is indicated by the formation of white silky precipitate.
The solution was then subjected to titration with Potassium dichromate filled in the burette. Indicator (potassium ferricyanide) was taken in the form of small drops on a butter paper.
After addition of small aliquots of potassium dichromate to the conical flask, solution in the flask was brought in contact with the indicator on the butter paper using a glass rod. Every time touching the rod with the indicator rod was washed in the water taken in a beaker before bringing it again in contact with the solution in the flask.
In the beginning the color of the indicator turned to blue as a result of formation of ferrous ferric cyanide, at the end point the color did not change to blue as all the ferrous in the conical flask was oxidised to ferric from ferrous.

Removal of stannous chloride is important as if it is not removed it will prevent the oxidation of Fe(ll) to Fe(lll) by potassium dichromate

For testing radioactivity in stones you can use Gamma- Ray spectrometry with HPGe detector.
