  • This video shows how I made the drive spur for my drill powered lathe. It is not a build video of the lathe itself, but you can find a link to that video by Patrick Sullivan below. Although not identical, I used his video as primary inspiration and guide to building my drill powered lathe and added a few tweaks here and there that I think enhance the design. It's a great video and a great design. However, even after making the drive spur the way he suggested in his video, as well as a few other attempts to replicate designs in other videos, and after they didn't really work well at all, I came up with this method. It's so much easier and more effective, or at least I thought it was. I wish I had thought of it earlier before trying all the other drive spurs. After searching the internet and RUclips I found that there weren't many or any videos for that matter specifically about making the drive spur. So once I nailed down this final concept that worked better than anything I'd tried, I had to pass it along.

Although almost any drill will work just fine, I thought that a drill with a speed locking trigger and adjustable speed dial on the trigger added more versatility to the lathe. The link to the drill I used is here:

I saw your carbide tip tool build and thought it was awesome, I'm going to try that. I was impressed with the stability of your 'drill lathe' I needed a bearing in front of the chuck to prevent it from wobbling all over the place.
I do think this is not a great build, I had looked at this idea and dismissed it as not having enough spinning resistance. I think you can find others who have used a 3/8th's inch coupling nut and a 3/8th's inch bolt that give very similar amount of spinning resistance as most standard lathe spurs. Indeed if you wanted you could even do this with a removable 3/8" 24unf or 1/2" 20unf and remove your chuck and use them directly off the power output of the drill. Very similar to a standard lathe.
Just some thoughts, I like tinkering with these small odds and ends. Wish the bearings in my cheapy drill were anywhere near as good as that drill!

Spot on dude. in the process of making a drill powered lathe and have been thinking of using a stud connector. I'll be asking some of the joiners at work if they have an old hole saw knocking about. Subscribed.

Allofus Moreofus , thanks. If you don’t have access to one and want to spend as little as possible you can likely find some at thrift/yard sales or even discount tool stores for next to nothing. Thanks for the comment and subscription.

Also, great video, I'd like to see a photo (or another video) on the jig you built for it

CL WoodWorks , I haven’t made any hugs for it. Just the lathe itself. I didn’t make a build video of the lathe because I so closely copied Patrick Sullivan’s design and I doubt I could do a better build video than he did. If I’m misunderstanding what you’re referring to please refresh my memory.

I will be making other videos that include the use of this lathe, like when I make my carbide tipped lathe tools and when I turn my custom
Chisel handles. I can provide a brief rundown of it in one of those.

Hey Adam, didn't you have a video on your cross cut sled? I am building a new one and wanted to copy yours.

CL WoodWorks , I don’t have a build video on the sled itself. I have footage for the modular spline jig that I attach to the sled, but need to get that finished and edited before I can post. I’m hoping sometime this week I can get that done.

Why not just use the existing teeth and just cut down the drill bit
