In the hunt for Japanese ingredients, my very good friend Miki takes me to J-Town, a Japanese shopping centre in Markham in the GTA. We share some silly stories from growing up together (I was always obsessed with video making apparently haha) and she makes me some delicious Japanese curry and cream corn croquettes. I hope you all enjoy this video, it made me smile the whole time.
OH! I threw in a wee little behind the scenes 2 Minute Tutorial on audio syncing your mic to the camera audio :D (skip to it at 10:07)
Miki, for those of you that don't know, is my next door neighbour. We grew up together since we were 3 years old and her family introduced me to Japanese culture. I ate Japanese food for breakfast and as afterschool snacks, her dad taught me how to use chopsticks and how to properly make green tea, and I fell in love with onigiri at a young age. Miki's mom would make me a plate full of bite sized onigiri on my b-day. She's a lovely friend and I'm lucky to have met such a great person at such a young age :)

J-Town is located at: 3160 Steeles Ave E, Markham, ON L3R 4G9

Finally meeting the legend from Martina's childhood stories from years and years of videos.
Have to visit J-town been to Pacific Mall lots of times now. Where did you get you mask?
Weird when you think about how many people know who miki is. Just from martina talking about her childhood friend.
Yes!!! :)
Indeed, Miki is quite famous!
She's a celebrity in this community
Is this the first time we're actually seeing the legendary Miki??
She is so sweet! So great!
I love that we are all so happy for Martina to see her childhood friend after we've heard about her so much! :)
Martina that little audio sync tutorial helped so much I'm doing film production in college so I'll keep that in mind...maybe more little tutorials like that because you explained it so well 🤩
Martina, this video sends an expressive warm and homey feeling of familiarity. Its like a new wonderful discovery of your home country with an old friend and fresh hope for the future. I was sad to see you leave Japan. But now I’m excited to see what is ahead in dear Canada, which I have been too twice but briefly. I hope to visit there again soon. Love to you and Simon.
I love how the wind smelled the food and blew its way in through the window. That’s so imaginative! Reminds me of my favorite childhood stories.
Martina (and Simon) don't you love how you can now understand Miki and her children when they are speaking Japanese? It must be such a cool feeling!
I LOVE seeing your videos pop up, but to add the tutorials in the middle, make my life.
So happy that you guys are back ...but I'm missing the both of you in the videos...hoping to see it soon
I seriously feel like I already knew Miki on a deep personal level after like a decade of Martina's anecdotes XD XD Miki is my Japanese best friend tooooooo
This was such a sweet video! Loved to finally see Miki in a video!
MIKI ? *the one from the legends* ????
Absolutely loved this!! I’m originally from Toronto as well and moved to California. Makes me homesick! Can’t wait to go back for a visit. ❤️
Yall are super cute shoppingggg! It reminds me when my good friend and I would spend forever just going up and down the aisles of my Asian grocery. 🧡
You guys in the comments are being so disrespectful. What's the point of speculating about their private lives and assuming things for your own amusement? The past 6 months have been difficult for EVERYONE. Nevermind moving countries or living with a chronic condition. Give them time, we will get more updates on their wellbeing through the information they WANT to share. Just because you're a RUclipsr it doesn't mean you need to share everything in your life, especially not immediately.
Please respect them if you have supported & followed this channel. Why change now??
Don't be nasty, be A nasty!!!
Yes! So agree with this. This community is usually so positive and supportive
Thank you! If they want to speculate go to reddit or discord but really what point is it doing that instead of just being supportive and waiting until they (if they) provide context.
And if they never do, oh well. We aren't living their lives and we see such small tidbits of their daily moments, you can't expect to understand someone fully from this. Allow them privacy.
Literally. Had someone block me earlier for saying this. They replied that they’re allowed to wonder and be curious and I’m like yeah totally but STOP GOSSIPING. clearly Simon and Martina would’ve said something more if they were comfortable talking about it. Just because they produce content doesn’t mean we butt into their lives and privacy. It’s so rude.
For the people who donate and pay for the channel, it’s okay to question on what the channel will look like in regards to content but their whole relationship doesn’t need to be under a microscope.
Also the comments and speculation in regards to Simon’s health and well-being were beyond rude and invasive. I was so surprised. I know people worry and are allowed to worry, but man. So not cool to comment on someone’s appearance.
Wow the pan they used for frying the croquet is so cool! I've never seen it before with those curved walls. Probably way better for blocking splatter. Where has that been all my life???
It was fun to see you with Miki. Seems like you all had a great time. That curry looked wonderful!
It's so lovely seeing Toronto in videos, and seeing how outsiders might be seeing it! This is just a normal sight for me (well...before COVID, when I'd actually commute).
Also fun fact, but I believe Toronto is the city with the most or second-most cranes in all of North America (or the world?). It's...a lot of cranes.
I haven't been on YT in a bit so it's nice to marathon these videos. It's so cool to see your friend too!💕💕
Nasties:
Martina, telepathically to us: 🎵 never really knew that she could dance like this 🎵
Miki is so cute, her kids too!
Thanks for taking us along with you guys.
Btw I really want to read the story about the blue cat. I think he had quite an adventure.
I agree! Kewpie is very important to good wellness.
Martina: Toronto has really bad traffic
Me: laughs in egyptian
loving these toronto vlogs 🇨🇦💗
I love this video so much! Thanks for taking us! ❤️
AHHH! I always wanted to know what those movie clackers did! Also MIKI!!!!
MIKI!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sailor Moon!! Fighting Evil by Moonlight, Winning by Daylight!!!!!!!! ONIGIRI!!!! Wait....oni...aren't they ogres?
Storytime with childhood friend! Awesome! Childhood friend who drive without touching the steering wheel... Childhood has super powers? Hmmm.
My friend and I like to take the train to Toronto and do things like this, but I've never been to J Town! So cool. I'd be really interested to see what restaurants there are
Awesome video! I wish we had such a well stocked Japanese grocery store in my home country. We do have a small one but its very limited what they sell.
Also I really enjoyed the tutorial. ^^
How did we not see it ???? =.(.........
I know! They did separate videos, you can tell they are living in separate places, someone pointed out neither of them are wearing a ring.
We haven’t seen a video since before they both moved to Canada where they are in the same video I know it’s their personal life but I’m worried
Not sure if you follow them on IG, but they’ve made a post basically about this topic!
Franko Baby where on their Instagram?
DoMo1012000 5th recent post, the caption
@Miss Hard Stan if you go to their community tab on here and click the photo of martina with the puppy, they posted about it in the comments. Its the same caption from instagram
Martina wrote on Instagram that they want privacy right now and aren’t ready to talk about it.
Loved all of this! Seems like there’s so much choice. And finally learnt why they use clapperboards.
So cool you are with your childhood friend. Love it. thank you for vlogging.
I just made curry-rice for the first time tonight with curry roux I got from H-Mart. super coincidence
daaang never knew that about the audio, thank you for teaching us!
I love Japanese food! Tasty!
UNAGI ONIGIRI?! so lucky ahhhh I've never seen that!
Welcome back to Canada! I enjoy your videos, whether it's about Korea, Japan, Toronto. Thank you for taking the time to post them. What is that torus-shaped electric deep-fryer/frying pan? It's about 20:43 minutes into the video. Where can I buy one? Does the curved sides prevent oil splatter? And the Japanese word matching card game, where can I purchase that? I live in Toronto.
Hi Cindy, I purchased the dome like deep fryer through amazon Japan. It’s great cuz it doesn’t splash oil onto the stovetop and the thermometer hanging inside is very useful!
Also, the matching card game is called “Karuta”. This was also purchased in Japan but I’m sure you can download the cards somewhere online and print them out yourself :)
I forgot I have emojis now! I’m one of the cool kids
What I like to do with my onigiri is mixing some umeboshi with my mayo/tuna.
👌
Hey Martina, It's true Markham isn't in Toronto. Toronto is the City of Toronto, the Capital of Ontario so It's misleading to say that the Japanese mall you went to is in Toronto. It's like saying New Jersey's Newark and Jersey City is New York, but really they're just within the New York Metropolitan Area. Or saying that the City of Richmond, BC is Vancouver.
Martina, you look genuinely happy to be hanging out with Miki and her children. I rarely see you look THAT happy in your videos. You are always (well almost always) cheerful.. but in this case you looked like you were glowing. I love it! Best friends are special. Self reflection wise (I do this a lot since I lost my husband in 2017 when I was 36.) I think the older you get, the more you realize how much those friendships mean. We always appreciate our friends, but the older you get it just gets more and more important to spend time with your best friends.
I’ve been having a struggle leaving comment I switched to mobile and apparently that works!! Thanks @miss candle
I just want to say a HUGE thank you to Miki and her family because had she not come into your life, you probably would never had gone abroad and had adventures in Asia and bringing so many people so much happiness.
Martina: I'm here with Miki.
Me: ...Not THE Miki??
exactly what I was thinking !!!

I LOVE that you guys are on Canada time now so it’s easier to watch videos when they premiere ☺️
Man, I really missed that Shakira cover.
Love your personality and the content you put out, Martina. I will always support YOU.
That was the shortest 23 minute video ever! Could have watched another 20 minutes on top of that as well. Thanks for sharing this with us, really enjoying the laid back vibes :)
You should consider doing a Skillshare class on video editing. With all the experience you have from many years of doing it, I think it would be really interesting to see that from you.
I think a video explaining some of the globalization differences from before you left Canada and when you came back to Canada would be really interesting. My grandma just recently was able to find a type of fruit she only ate in China when she was a kid and when she first found it in America she got so excited and ate as much of it as she could. It makes me so happy that she can eat this stuff decades later
Please film about our store, “Taro’s fish” on Sheppard Avenue East! I can talk to my manager to make it easier for you to film there if you would actually come and film!!
I adore Martina, it feels like coming home when I watch her. :')
“You unlocked the background story for: Martina.”
I'll gladly sub if you make another channel, Martina. Much love to you
I am super grateful that you filmed this reconnecting with an old friend and shared it with us. It's so awesome to see you laughing and having an awesome time with a good bud.
Wishing you guys all the best!
I loved how free flowing and personal this video felt. The number of topics covered was very diverse. I enjoyed that too.
Martina we are here for you. We your true fans love you so much and if you ever need to reach out to your fans or do a live stream I wanna be there for you. Wish I could do more but im stuck in Ireland being bored in a lockdown instead
Martina... because of you I now hear "Shakira, Shakira". in your voice, in my mind, every single time anyone says her name or mentions a song by her.
So fun to finally meet Miki! When I saw you post that this was going to be a video I was very excited because Miki is super instrumental in making the Martina we see today!
Also the grocery shopping was fun! I always love when people come to western iterations of overseas places and see the things they keep the same but more fun, the things they changed or added!
Hey Martina, I just want you to know that you are hella cool, never stop being yourself! 💪😄☀️
Yay! It's Miki! I remember seeing her in one of Martina's childhood pictures. Its so cool to see her in one of the videos. Really enjoyed!
I'm glad you decided to stick with the 20 minute Vid Martina!! I will take all the content you can throw at meh. I've missed you guys soooooo much. I'm glad to see you back in action and can't wait to see where your journey takes you!! Lots of LOVE !!!
I feel like Martina would make the best elementary school teacher
So nice to see you again, Martina! And so nice to finally meet Miki!
A lot of things happened since you took your hiatus from video making, one of which I wanted to tell you: I knew something was wrong with me because I was exhausted and in pain. During covid I went *ping* and I had a suspect that turned out to be right: I have fibromialgia. The diagnosis was a HUGE relief because now I knew what was going on and how to manage it.
And I have to thank you again because even before I had learned a lot about chronic pain management from your videos (and my partner from Simon's videos on being the spouse of a person with chronic disease) and now I'm intensely applying it to my life and also trying to transmit it to other people with chronic issues.
Or at least I try: the Italian fibro community has a tendency to be a pity party, I have a feeling they might kick me out for saying "you can have pain AND a life!". We grow around pain.
Martina, thank you for the mini tutorial about syncing up audio. I never even thought to look up why they use the little clapper board in the movies. And also I don't use a separate microphone when recording because I'm making very simple videos right now but I will eventually use a separate microphone from a camera. So that was super helpful!
ive been with you guys since about 2010, and ive been hearing about miki since what seems like forever. i'm so happy to see her in a video like this in canada!!
i actually attended u oft (pandemic grad uwu) because of you and simon..... i even got in for english (later switched programs tho). you two have had such a long lasting positive impact on my life... seeing you back in the place i now call home myself brings me such happiness, even tho i know it was a very difficult decision for you. i hope you two can be happy and make magic here too >
5:44 That isn't a bamboo shoot, its myoga (Japanese ginger). It has distinguish flavour; tastes like lemon glass and it has crispy texture. A popular condiment for Japanese noodle (soba and udon), tofu or sashimi. It's delicious when it cooked as tempura. Also, that bamboo shoot in a package, is different kind of bamboo shoot to make memma for ramen. Nevertheless, you have learned Japanese cuisine like a sponge, Martina-san! Please make more Japanese cooking video.
I love seeing you and your friend together! I do miss you and Simon together, but you do you boo! I'll still build ladders with you!
Martina: "Is it okay if the videos 20mins guys?"
Me: *Votes YES* Love ur watching ur vids!!💕
Me: *Watches the vid* omg why did it feel like a 5 - 10min vid~😅😂
Audio Sync is so awesome hahaha
I love this format, Martina! It is genuinely just a joy to watch you shop and hang out and cook and play games. Not to mention the myth, the legend, the Miki.
The legendary Miki! Shes real!
Ah I remember Miki as being the person that introduced you to Sailor Moon. So great to finally get to meet her! Her and her little family are lovely.
I love the mini audio tutorial! So educational!
Oh that’s great to hear! Phew 😅
The Shakira joke will never stop cracking me up XD
Honestly. It's so silly and simple but it makes me laugh every time
It’s so nice to get to ‘meet’ Miki after all the stories about her over the years :)
Thanks Martina for keep on creating content for us. We truly appreciate you! And for Simon, wish you all the best on your studies ❤️ Love you guys!
Are we going to have a short series when Martina and Simon can film together called "Eat Your Poutine"?
It's so cool to meet Miki!! You've talked so much about her. Thanks for sharing your friendship!
EDIT: Ok.. maybe not ALOT, but still! Enough I was excited!
Is it me or Martina seems happier, much lighter? I guess the recent move back to Canada must have given her and Simon a much needed breather, that is being closer to their families and old friends. Wishing you guys all the best! Please upload more often, with Miki, too! Whenever you can, of course (^_^)
That's an amazing store wish they had something like that in, well, Europe. Not even London's Japanese Supermarket comes even close to this.
I don’t know what’s going on but I love you Martina and I support you 100%. I’m not going anywhere. As long as you’re still here, so am I. 💖
Yay!!! Miki!! We finally get to meet the person who helped fuel Martina’s love of Asian culture! ❤️❤️
Hey! Just a video idea: You reconstructing your mini garden!!! I love those videos.
Yes!! I want to see the reconstruction of the mini garden!! Martina could be in a little construction hat, it would be so cuuuute.
@@jamierussell2643 YES!
First time I’ve watching something as it premieres 😂 I always miss you guys when we’ve been apart for a while, hope everything is going good for you 💘💞💞
I loved seeing J-town and Miki!! I squealed when I saw her, it was like seeing a secret celebrity!
Miki!! I was shocked seeing her for the first time, somehow my dumb brain expected a little girl 😂
"It's ok you guys can read my mind" Me: After watching for like 6+ years.. probably. Also it's weird when you feel like you know someone.. but they don't know you lol.
I'd love to see a video of everything you stocked up on in Japan to bring back to Canada! 🍡🍙🍣
I would love you to make a video explaining how come you returned to Canada! I love your videos though and am just happy that you’re making videos again
Omg she is in Canada ?
They do have a video on it! :)
I'm just so happy to see Martina so happy and to finally be privileged to finally meet her childhood friend Miki. I hope everyone and your families are doing well and everyone is safe and healthy!
I want to see more videos like this! Miki and her kids are so cute and it’s great to see you having fun with them 😊 Also, of what you showed of Toronto, it looks a lot like Vancouver. Lots of construction here too! :3 I appreciate the audio syncing lesson ‘cause it’s been a while since I edited
I'm not used to seeing Martina wearing regular clothes - I miss the colorful outfits and hair 😢
I remember you mentioning Miki YEARS ago in your Draw My Life video I think? That's so wonderful that you both are still so close! Makes me happy to see uploads from this channel again. 😊❤️
The audio editing part was super cool :) Your audio is always awesome. I love the music you make
Glad you liked that little part! I wasn’t sure if it would be too boring for people to watch 😓 haha
@@eatyourkimchi Half of the fun of the videos on your channel is the sound design. It has *good energy*. I liked learning about it :)
@@eatyourkimchi personally I enjoy the little educational segments about editing and creating audio and music. I love all the wonderful creativity that goes into your videos. Thank you for your videos. Sending lots of love your way ❤
I have been watching and loving their content for over 10 years. I basically grew up watching them. I know a lot of us are curious about what’s going on with them, which is only natural because we are used to them being a duo. BUT you have to respect their privacy, covid has been a hard time and that’s putting in lightly. It’s been over 10 years and people can change over that time. They’re still giving us content so let’s respect and support them. I think we all need a little extra love at this time.
I have to say it has been amazing as someone living in Ontario to watch Simon and Martina go from first arriving in Korea to moving to Japan and now back to Canada. I have learned so much about Korean and Japanese culture and food from you guys and now I will be able to find places in Ontario I can go to to enjoy Japanese and Korean food too! or just awesome places in general. Love you guys always
Ah, once again I express the need for a heart button near the like button.
I loved the stories you guys shared of your childhood.
The talk about teachers is spot on, I realized. One always has to be creative in order to ensure the student grasps the concept being taught! It's tough and can be frustrating but even the student may help you to better understand the concept you're trying to explain. It's cliche but true!
Martina, the song you made about children not hitting was perfect! LOL. Your story book looks fun, too :)
Thanks for sharing and stay safe!
I’m really liking this new vlogging format! It reminds me to the old days with the eat your kimchi first videos! ❤️
Martina I’ve been watching since I was 13 and I’m 23 now and still religiously watch you guys. I hope you’re well, sending lots of love.
