- In a few hours, the winds of typhoon Hagibis are going to hit Tokyo in full force. Right now, as we upload this, the winds are already loud. We’re not sure how serious it’s going to be, but everyone we know is freaked out. Grocery stores have been cleaned out. Every shop is closed. Public transportation and airplanes are all stopped. We’re going to show you a bit of what the atmosphere here in Tokyo is like, we’ll show you a bit about how we’re prepping for the storm, and give you a couple of useful apps.
We’ll keep you up to date with what’s happening in Tokyo over on our Twitter and Instagram. Check those out:

#Typhoon #Hagibis #台風19
UPDATE: ok, I think the worst of it is over. The wind has totally died down here. We get random bursts of wind but rarely now. It’s still raining but not heavily. And our friends in the city are saying the same. Though a few of our friends got flooded, no one is hurt. We’ll see what it’s like tomorrow!
glad to hear! stay safe ❤
it's kinda amazing that you guys could still get internet during the typhoon. In my country, it would be gone. Stay warm guys!
I'm glad that the storm is dying out. Will you continue to update here until tomorrow or in the community tab?
I'm so glad you guys are ok!!
Stay safe! 🙏🏻🇨🇦
Alright. Next update: winds getting a lot louder and our windows are shaking a bit. We’ve sprung a leak and got a bucket out. Meemers is sleeping and DGAF. We’re still safe!
Omg, I hope you guys are protected. Please keep us updated. Hugs from Portugal😥
Be safe! It is better to be overprepared.
You guys are prepared! Trust me after watching the video it seems like you guys are fully ready for the storm. I grew up in Florida and we dealt with hurricanes every year. Hope everything moves fast and you guys don’t lose power! 🤞🏼
Stay safe both of you...
Watching now. So glad to hear you are still safe and hanging in there. 💖💖💖💖
Update: it feels like the storm isn’t shaking our house as much, but we just got an emergency alert on our phones.
Stay safe guys! I hope you don 't have to but if there is a call to evacuate please do!
Good luck to you guys. Stay safe
Stay safe po!
They're saying there was an earthquake too. Did you feel that?
What does it say?
“Girl I don’t know, we’re just vloggers, we ain’t CNN!” lmaooo
🤣🤣🤣 I was literally screaming at the screen at MARTINA!!! LMAOO
Ironically I have barely found anything about Typhoon Hagibis in America and this is one of the most informative videos I could find.
William Pittman I was thinking the same thing! 😂
@@williampittman2432 I’ve noticed, America never reports on typhoons. There was a recent one that hit Japan and no one in America knew. It was nowhere in the News. However, they report on Hurricane (same thing as a typhoon, only difference is where they occur, not even kidding here).
CNN ain’t informative anyways
Typhoon: super dangerous and windy and stormy
Simon: wears shorts and crocs.
Having experienced multiple typhoons myself, I can assure you Simon is in the perfect attire for the weather. Nobody wants their feet soaking in wet socks or their wet pants plastered against their legs. Shorts and crocs/flip flops are definitely the way to go, and you'll see the majority of people dressed like this. It makes for so much easier clean up when you get home.
@@skammie5 and if you have a cut or wound
What will u do?
Pretty sure it's like Fall now in Japan.
Last fall when I was there. It's as hot as summer. Sweating all over even though it's raining.
@@itachiml6506 If you have a cut on your leg, I would suggest bringing bottled water to rinse it as it gets dirty. Continuous irrigation (and perhaps a chance for it to dry off when you are not out in the open) is better than having the equivalent of a wet dirty bandaid touching the wound all the time. But probably the best thing to do is to avoid going out in weather like this.
So, we're ok right now. The wind is really picking up here and the rain is relentless. We've been nervous all day and, hey, nothing like taking that nervous energy and focusing that towards making a video. Meemers is totally unfazed by this all. He's licking his foot as we speak. We'll keep posting updates here and on Instagram and Twitter if you want to follow. But we've still got a lot of the typhoon to work through.
Stay safe! Hopefully the earthquakes will quit their s*** as well!
Simon and Martina stay safe guys! I’m down in Hiroshima prefecture and it’s just been super windy but nothing else. I hope it stays like this
I'm so glad you're ok!!! Tokyo is more in the middle of the storm than Chiba, but we are also being hit pretty hard ^^" also that earthquake... thank you for this video though!
Sending prayers to Japan. Stay safe.
Simon and Martina hi from Odawara! We passed the first half now and so far a lot of flooding. The wind died down and im guessing we are in the eye. Will be sleeping on the first floor tonight with our lil pup! Be safe there in kichijoji!
Just a tip from someone living in a hurricane zone: it's recommended you store at least one gallon of water per person per day for three days, for drinking and sanitation.
@PATRIOT HAM Make this statement into an independent comment. Replying this under a comment about water storage doesn't make sense
I thought it was 3 gallons of water per day per person for drinking, sewage, food prep, bathing, etc...
@PATRIOT HAM lol wtf. Not the right place or time for this comment, you're doing more harm than good for the Korean people
Don’t forget pets, need to have water set aside for them.
PATRIOT HAM wrong platform
Martina taught me more about atmosphere and weather than high school could
I actually learned a lot about weather in Oceanography (I took that instead of chemisy).
Watery Star it’s cool that you had that as an option at your school.
I think this is the funniest comment here, lmao 😂
Sounds like your school system sucks. :/
09:38 the announcement on speaker is making me anxious. It’s like one of those before-the-end-of-the-world scenes in the movies
Around 16:15 , when the sirens are blaring OMINOUSLY in the back ground, tension condensing, remnants and remembrance of panic. I was SO stressed watching!!!
Every month where I live (same day and time), they test the different emergency sirens including someone speaking. It's unnerving every time, though.
Glad to know "gotta get the bread and milk" is a global instinct and desire lol
I’ll never get it 😂 rather have better food than crusty milk and bread
Why would you want to buy milk if there's a possibility of a power outage? I understand buying bread because you don't need to cook or refrigerate it.
@@munirahbakar4123 bread gets pretty moldy and stale pretty quick if you don't freeze it
And it's weird because those foods go bad pretty fast. They should be stocking up on canned foods instead.
I don't do bread and milk fortunately, empty calories will make you ill. I prefer soya milk, miso or herbal and nutrient dense food.. much healthier alternatives all the way. It's safer to be vegan, it helped me during one month water fast, your body needs to be high in nutrients in harsh times
Martina: " hi mom, I promise I'll be safe. " Goes outside and ride a bike.
Martina has a Canadian hat to protect her.
Ya everybody knows the Canadian hat is typhoon proof. Don't worry.
@@peterlee5449 lol
Imagine being the food left behind on the shelves in the combini. "Yeah, I wouldn't eat that even during an emergency."
It's comparable to the last person on earth not wanting to shag you even though you're both lonely and need some.
@@only900more2go Both of your comments are hilarious + I was originally going to comment in the comment section on how I kinda wished we would get a zoom-in on what food or flavours got left behind in the 7-11... :D
@@octopu5ie i saw on Twitter that Vegan cup noodles and german cereal bread were completely avoided.
@Egg Som Som
Even Vegans know that in an emergency situation proteins are a must have.

We freeze gallons of water prior to storms hitting to help keep the fridge cold during power outages.
that's fucking brilliant.
Oh! This is a new one to me!! We usually do stock up on water and also fill the bathtub etc, but I've honestly never thought of freezing water! Good tip, thanks for sharing!
Smart!
That's so smart!
Clever
Also, NOTIFICATION SQUAD! Let us know if you're safe wherever you are. I know a few of you are in Shizuoka and it looks really grim there.
It's passed Shizuoka! It's calm here now. I feel like I can relax for the first time in 12 hours since the level 3 alert woke me up this morning. Stay safe you two! The winds were no joke and I was so nervous I teared up a bit when I was in the middle of it.
In Chiba rn, kind of near the coast, but safe so far! Worried about my old host family further down the peninsula though, I've heard of about nine deaths already...
I live in an apartment on the 4th floor so I might be fine for flooding, but am watching out for any evacuation announcements. Stay alert everyone! Protect Meemers with your life! 😅😩🙏😸
Im in Tokyo too, but I’m safe right now! It is still going to pick up from now, but things are going well as of now! But the line news message notifications FREAK me out!
It is also calm now in Osaka. I didn't go outside today but it didn't hit Osaka that strong I guess.
I'm in Saitama prefecture, there's a lot of rain and wind but we don't have to evacuate (yet, maybe we will when it hits the hardest) Around 21:00 it will be pretty rought cause it will be close by, but I believe it will be fine! Thank you for your concerns for everyone in Japan guys!
I actually feel bad for coco curry employees having to work during a typhoon
When I lived in Japan, my company still made me go into work. Literally, everyone else was off. It was ridiculous. On my way home, the train stopped two stops away from my station because they suspended service. Luckily, I took a taxi with my co-workers home. It was a little scary, lol.
@@chigasaki06 that's horrible! I'm glad you and your co-workers were safe. It's ridiculous what some employers make their employees go through
chigasaki06 And poor taxi drivers!
Seriously... they could have been in serious danger...
I live in Sendai and I saw 2 parking attendants out in the elements during the typhoon. I felt so bad for them. :(
Simon and Martina outside in this like Missourians in a tornado.
I didn't asked to be seen like this ma'am!
I am a Missourian. Can confirm.
E B im a Missourian its fine XD
It must be a midwest thing. We do the same thing in Wisconsin. 😅
I'm considering moving from the West coast and I'm terrified of tornadoes. Everyone in Missouri is laughing I know
simon and martina: not understanding why everyone is taking so many measures
me: lives in hurricane center aka florida and prepares like this every 2 seconds
Montserrat Kompatzki Mood, we got our electricity knocked out by Dorian bless we have a gas stove and water heater
Same here. Jealous of their windows though. So much easier 😂
Same here. South florida. We go through this Every single summer
@@lindarosales87 South Florida here too, this is old hat for us lol
I’ve live in California but have been to Hong Kong multiple times to visit family and it’ll be during typhoon season. We are the same way when we go.
Let me just say that the japanese aren't over reacting as they empty all the shelves in stores, close up shops, fill up their bathtubs, etc. When hurricane Irma and Maria strick Puerto Rico we did the same things to prepare and trust me when I say it was all worth it. At least for the first few days to 2 weeks we had enough water to drink, flush our toilets, shower, etc because of preparation.
Also, a good tip if the power goes out, fill up ziplock bags, bottles and containers with water and throw them in the freezer. If the power goes out you can put some in the fridge and leave the rest in the freezer and you'll have nicely stored food for atleast a week. If you fill a trash bag with water and put it infront of doors the pressure in the bags will prevent the water from outside to get in the house.
Please be safe!
We are up in a Sendai; so we experienced everything two hours or so after you guys. Our house is near a river and in a dangerous flood zone. Around 5 we got a evacuation 4 notice and decided to head to my husband's Grandma's house who just so happens to live on the other side of town on top of a big hill. She's the only family we have here and it just so happens we moved to Sendai from Utsunomiya; Tochigi this last spring. So just to be safe because we have two dogs and a 1 1/2 year old we left. None of our other neighbors did but we found out later the street was flooded and the stop and go lights in our area were so far under water you couldn't drive out if you wanted to. Luckily our house and neighborhood in general didn't have any damage; just some driveway ramps in the street.
Martina; don't worry I cried too. Part was probably stress but also just hoping Japan and friends around would be ok. Hugs glad you guys are ok and have g9od neighbors who called you.
Oh my goodness how scary! I’m so glad you’re okay 😓

Better to be over prepared than under prepared
germankiwigal they didn’t but ok… go off they are showing us how it’s to prepare for it but go off
@@ninninin656 They're not making it out to be a joke, they're presenting humor to keep themselves calm in their situation. It's a serious concern, yes, but if you go into full-panic mode, that doesn't help them or anyone else. They're not making offensive jokes nor are they downplaying the typhoon, and that's pretty presumptuous on your part to say that they are.
As someone who lives in the Caribbean, I can say that hurricane season is no joke. Trust me, its BETTER to be over prepared than under prepared!! When hurricane Maria hit two years ago it was horrible so please be very careful!!!!
You know who I am particularly worried of? Really old people who live in the countryside... I just hope they're not alone and have some support...
Don't they support each other? Most don't have living relatives or relatives who live nearby.
I read about an elderly couple who was trapped and the husband lost his life because he couldn't get up from the muddy waters :/ Neighbors could hear him yelling for help but they too were trapped. So to the person who replied, they can't support each other all the time.
typhoon: *finna hit japan*
the japanese: oh word? let’s get this bread
ALL THE BREAD IS GONE!
Bread is safe staple. It will last long.
@@nakita12i In case of power and possibly gas outage, bread is the only available carbs. Most of Japanese bread only last for 4-5 days because most of them are soft bread with fillings, but they're so good...
@@DumbestDumbFool yes, i understand this. I live on Saipan, an island in the pacific ocean. We get typhoons, 2nd strong storm (Yutu) in American history hit us last year. All I'm learning is that CoCoCurry is the Waffle House of Japan: always open
Monica Coronado thought the same thing!
When I worked at Waffle House years ago, the manager was telling me to expect to work holidays, and I said, “But you’re closed on Christmas, right?” And she was like, “NOOOOO, the only time this location has ever closed was the time we had a kitchen fire and the fire department FORCED us to close and even then it was only for a few hours.” I was like, “Okay, I quit.” 😂 I actually stayed a couple of months, but left for other reasons.

As someone who has been through two Cat 5 hurricanes in my life, it pains me to watch this video and how unprepared you guys are. I'm just happy that you guys seem okay from the updates. Stay safe
Yea... when I saw the tables and other items being left outside... I just thought ooohh those are possible projectiles. Yeah... hurricanes have made me super paranoid lol

As a born and raised Floridian, I'm pretty accustomed to hurricanes. Wishing you the best!!!
Martina is the sweetest person in the world. Fact.
Seeing the bread shelves empty reminds of when we have the tiniest bit of snow here in the UK everyone panics and all the bread and milk is gone ❄️
And dry items like biscuits also seem to disappear as do canned goods
Same thing in the u.s.
Omg yes I live in Kansas and any snow ppl go crazy and get milk and bread.....never understood it lol rather have good foods!
I think it's because as long as they have the basics they can have hot drink and some toast 😊☕
I get bread but are you gonna do with the milk?
Idk why for some reason when i was watching this, i feel calm and relaxed and safe. Maybe itthe sound of the rain.
But i do hope you guys are safe and Japan is safe
I felt so stressed with maternal worry watching them, in a Martin's mom kind of way 🤯❤️
When you’re from the Caribbean so your natural reaction is to load up on water, TP and bread and hunker down casually lol.
It’s harder when you’re on an island because there isn’t really any escape, so I feel for you guys.
Also why is Simon biking in the middle of a typhoon with shorts on?! 😂
Ruby Luna it hadn’t touched ground yet
David Dacus it was still raining like a mf tho
Humid AF probably
Here in Australia kids walk home from school in terrible summer storms with their shoes off 😂 It's hot and their feet are getting wet anyway, they're more comfortable uncovered! Same thing for Simon probably
Because he's Canadian 😂
Coincidence:
"Hagibis" means rapidity/ swiftness in tagalog.
Also, Hagibis has one of the most rapid intensification, from tropical storm to a super typhoon in just one day.
I don't think it is a coincidence.
Oh, okay.
yeah I believe typhoons are more thoughtfully named than the Western "the 7th tropical storm of the year will be named George"
Julius Nepos aint a coincidence. the philippines itself has had its own devastating typhoons.
Sajirah Collazo then again the japanese themselves are literally calling this typhoon the ‘19th storm(of the year)’. i think hagibis is the int’l name
Its like here in Florida, everyone gets thirsty when a hurricane comes.
Can't be bothered to stay hydrated the rest of the year...till a hurricane approaches...suddenly needs 2 gallons of water per person per day and don't go forgetting about the bread, milk, and making sure that your car is filled up with gas...even if you had 3/4 of a tank...better go fill it up anyways...SMDH...
@@DrgnSpawn well the gas is important because the gas stations shut down and you can get stuck in traffic for hours on end
@@badlandsghost Well yes IF your area is going to be directly affected by the hurricane...I'm talking about people overreacting on the opposite side of the state...And I've never seen a gas station that was not in the direct path of the storm close...but I see them run out of gas all across the state way too many times...
@@DrgnSpawn i think its because hurricanes have like 8 different paths they can take so people prefer to just be safe than sorry, we've seen what happens when we arent.

I'm glad Tokyo made it through Hagibis ok and you guys are ok. I don't miss typhoos in Japan. When I lived there as a young girl we had one that washed three full group tour buses off a mountain into a river. They were sightseeing and had no other way to go but back the way they came. The rain caused a mud slide. It was so sad. Another snapped a full grown tree in half that was right next to our house. We never found the top half, the bottom half was still standing. Japanese typhoons, no joke.
It’s funny because bread is the first to go when a hurricane is coming.
Don't forget the milk and bottled water too.
@@kristen1881 and eggs and butter. Never understood the logic.

because it doesn't require prep before eating. I just realised it after thinking "japan's main carb is rice so why bread??"
1 minute in the video and i can relate so hard already. i went to 3 supermarkets, 2 bakeries, and 2 conbinis and there was NO BREAD ANYWHERE.
Bread is always the first thing to sell out during natural emergencies here in the US too. Lol You would think it would be canned food....

Thank you for showing me how wide and wonderful this world is, and for also showing me it's something I can experience if I put my mind to it. You guys are such an inspiration to me.

I’m glad y’all are safe! We had to do prep like this every time there was a typhoon heading towards Okinawa/South Mainland Japan. It’s definitely an interesting experience
I've been watching your Insta stories and I'm amazed by the wind and how chill Meemers is.

The pronunciation of the name is actually ha-GI-bis. The stress is on the second syllable. It's like when you say "tornado". Hagibis is the Tagalog word for "speed".
