I once got to L99 and flubbed entering the code. Got so frustrated, I just set the game down forever. Seeing the end completes me just little bit. Great run. Thanks!
Glad you got to see the end! You actually got farther than I ever did before I learned the speedrun. :D Vault code entry is my most nervous part of the speedrun. I use a dogbone style NES controller, the kind that packed with a toploader, because it's easier to get diagonal inputs. The downside is that it's easier to accidentally move the cursor during code entry. I've flubbed the code many times.
In terms of finding the complete password and getting the "real" ending, this might have been THE single hardest game in NES history. I just can't imagine anyone figuring that shit out without a guide.
Now I wish that was something I could experience. A group of friends learned this for a very casual 21-week speedrun event, during which we had up to two weeks to get a best time in this game (while also having another active game in the event). After one night trying, it didn't seem reasonable to try to solve the game casually. Imagine tracking down part of the vault code on one night, then another part another night. Then you go to the end and it doesn't work! What?! Definitely one of the hardest, but still fair NES games. And it's so much fun.
I always thought this game didn't have an ending when I was a kid! I've only seen a fraction of this game. I must have really sucked at this game. I didn't understand any of these mechanics!
At this point, I can only wonder what the organic gameplay experience was like. To enter the final encounter, you need to find secret tiles in 8 secret rooms which unveil a part of the vault code. But there are 32 vault codes respective to the first character of your password. But how much playing do you have to do just to realize that's what's needed? Then the process of discovering and tabulating all that data through replay. You work forward again and again and again. So, the question of difficulty -- I don't think it's hard, but it's laborious. For an unorganized gamer, Gauntlet will be impossible to solve. For anyone else, it's just a matter of time. Value is how I'd measure an NES game, rather than difficulty. I think Gauntlet is one of the most valuable gaming experiences on NES, up there with Zelda 1, Zelda 2, Super Mario 3, Ninja Gaiden, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, etc.
What happens at the end, if you just go in the exit without first grabbing that item that's just past the exit, in the final stage? Do you NOT beat the game?
I used to play this game all the time. I could never beat the end of the game with that dragon. I would always be the elf. They would always send me back 10 or five levels. I don’t remember how much it was. I had the password too.
Whats the treatsure actually do for you in this game? I thought it was to increase health or something. I see you get full health just with an exit on that level that gets you health.
That's right, the treasure increases max health. 2 or 3 times in the run, a red menu screen will open up. I'm not doing that, it happens automatically when hitting a treasure threshold. In the speedrun, we'd prefer to minimize this. Finding a valid exit in treasure rooms fully refills health. This is very important later in the game, most especially approaching room 88 where life can get very low
Oh dear. I don't know; no one has submitted a warrior run. It's been done, I think by speedrunner Error72 in fifty something minutes. It's so hard though. I have only made it to 25 or so on warrior
I spent so many hours and quarters in the arcade playing this game. Even to this day I still say, “green elf needs food, badly,” when I’m hungry.

Love this game. Being able to memorize this games stage layouts is very impressive
This game, Demon sword, and Simon’s quest were my shit as a kid.
Just before the 1 minute mark,I could hear you let out a low sigh, and I kinda chuckled, because it sounded just like when they grab the food!!!...lol
Amazing! I kept going around in circles as a kid due to taking the wrong exists.
Hats off to you sir! That's quite the feat!
I remember this being dubbed the hardest NES game ever created

The Eunos Gauntlet has been thrown down!
Impressive.
oh I loved and hated this game, no internet to rely on my 10yr old brain could never beat it...that god damned TIMER

Yup, that's a Game Over.

What if you shoot the orb?
How to play after 70 levels at gauntlet2 gameboy 1989 ?
HOOOOOOO!
Nice run. What is the world record with the warrior?
Oh dear. I don't know; no one has submitted a warrior run. It's been done, I think by speedrunner Error72 in fifty something minutes. It's so hard though. I have only made it to 25 or so on warrior
This guy went full Legolos
How do you get from 98 health to max at 1:23 ?
Finding the exit in a treasure room gives a full health refill.
@@EunosXX Thank you! It's quite different to the arcade version!
