Great points! Out of personal experience I want to add: check out if the bag topples over when you put it down, in case that's something that would be a discomfort for you. I personally hate it when they topple over or even slip down when you lean them against something (like your leg or a wall) and the next bag I'll get for myself needs to pass my now mandatory topple test. When it comes to rain: I always, always, ALWAYS bring a poncho. Light weight, uses it's own pocket as a bag, is safe to use in wind, covers everything including the backpack, no risk of water getting between the backpack and your back, and you can even get stuff out of the backpack or put on / take off your jacket underneath without everything getting wet. True lifesaver in my world.
I'm also consider buying merino Tshirts for casual & travel outfit. I've always worried that merino wool would be too hot. But last month I went hiking with a friend who wore a merino Tshirt under 30°C heat. He had no problem with it which really impressed me. Thanks for sharing your travel experience with merino clothing.
I've been having a very dark week and seeing this video pop up just now poked a little ray of light through the black clouds, your energy is infectious.....and I haven't even watched the video yet. Thanks for your videos.
I recently discovered your channel, and I just want to say thank you for all the detail you provide in your video's descriptions. With all the time stamps and links to everything you show, it's a great help and is very appreciated.
I’m 6’4” and 265 lbs so my clothes are also extra big. I’m all about packing light and efficiently but i do have to go with a larger bag than most. Luckily it’s proportionately easier to carry for me. Airlines don’t take size of a person into consideration so the restrictions are actually helpful in forcing me to be minimalist. If you are smaller then the restrictions should be more than enough to accommodate your needs so don’t stress.
Another important consideration is whether the bag will fit your body. Torsos can be shorter than the allowed carry on length. A backpack style bag longer than is comfortable doesn't work regardless of other considerations.
Man, I love your videos dude. I have been on a simple living trend for awhile now. I love to simplify every aspect of my life as much as possible. This one was so cool, I travel with one tiny backpack as well. It isn't that hard, once you realize you don't need what you think you need. BTW...I need that hat! I love that style. Cheers!!!
Great video. I’m curious if you have an opinion on the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 30? I’ve been using this bag for the last 5year along with a Synapse 19 as a personal item. I’ve had great success with this load out on multiple type of trip including 2 weeks in Europe on a multi city trip. I’m curious why it disappeared entirely from the one bag/ carry-on only discussions. I love the versatility it brings with the absolute strap which is absolutely fantastic. As a fellow Canadian, I understand it’s absurdly expensive now but some of the choices in videos I’ve seen on this topic are really expensive as well. In any case I love your videos, thank you for making them!
I have the Aer Travel Pack 3 small, in X-pac, just like yours and I looove the admin panel. I like having all my phone, cables, power banks, wallets, passport, notebooks, pens, iPad mini, at hand while flying. I certainly wouldn't want to be zipping that bag open mid-flight to take out a tech pouch
I love your videos! I'm planning on going on a backpacking trip in S.America next year so I always watch your videos for inspiration and ideas. I also notice your cool tattoos! Could you make a video on them? They look so badass and cool.
I believe your personal item-sized, under-seat Osprey daypack is the Daylite series "Cinch" model, a top loading 15L daypack with a cinch cord for closing in lieu of a zippered panel. I believe you called it out as the 13, but the 13L version is panel loading with zipper closure, gains two external bottle slots, and has a suspended instead of full height laptop slot (I prefer the extra protection of a suspended laptop slot, but can live with the non-suspended Cinch 15L due to its weight advantage (12 oz) to size ratio and narrow 9.5" width, which leaves room for a leg on either side under the seat}. Because zippers are relatively heaving compared to draw cords, the larger Cinch 15 has significantly more storage space yet weighs less. Someone should check the ASTM volume someday, the industry standard volume test allows stuffing any mesh bottle slots and counting that volume too, while the Cinch doesn't have bottle slots so the main compartment should actually be 15L (the front flat panel zipper slot doesn't add volume, since whatever you stuff there subtracts from main compartment space). Finally, two 700ml Trader Joes sport cap bottles will fit side by side in the flat front zipper panel, albeit eating into main compartment space. I was worried I would have a stow spot for water (short of a hiking bladder in the laptop slot) but actually I'll be able to haul enough water onboard for my 14 hour flights. The Cinch is hard to find. The Daylite 13 and Daylite Plus 20L are much more common, usually stocked at REI. The Cinch is a little gem, thanks for sharing your crazy-light packing strategy with us.
Also, thanks for the huge tip on motorcyle taxis - yeah the options for getting to a hotel is a lot of SE Asian locations goes up greatly if a onebag etc. is worn in backpack mode. I have to be honest and admit that I need a hip pack to, and that would be a problem for me since the seats are short.
I really cannot praise that Tomtoc bag enough. I bought it after seeing your recommendation for budget bags, and I agree that it's hard to beat. It's affordable, made with quality materials, large enough for most people, and seems durable. It's lasted for 3 trips so far and has a 4th coming up in December. The last budget one I had broke on the first trip because it had clips on the bottom of the straps instead of stitching. It's also 31% off on Amazon right now. My mother said she's going to buy one for my father lol.
This is probably the most helpful concise video I've ever seen on this topic. Most people COMT even think to ask themselves questions to get to know their true selves. Saves so much time and money.
Ended going with the tomtac bag you covered a while ago! Going to Japan in in a little over 3 months so we’ll see how we do with only the tomtac backpack and sling bag haha
I'm traveling to Thailand for the first time and watched tons of your vids in advance of the trip. I went with a Cotopaxi Dia Del Dark 35L. For three weeks. My travel buddies are a bit incredulous but I think it is going to be amazing.
I'm guessing from the tech pouch you ended up deciding to use was the belroy, what are the small alpakas used for if it's no longer tech/daily needed tech?
I would love to try merino wool, but no one has anything that fits me. I'm both big and tall, and while Unbound has tall, they stop one size too small for me, and their pants are both too short and too small in the waist.
Man I’ve been looking for a “buy for life” duffel/backpack hybrid that can work for camping/hiking and short informal/ business travel, as of now I havent found many, the Filson one only huckberry sells, tom bihn aeronaut and the Patagonia MLC 45, any other options I should consider or that you guys recommend ? I’m more of a luggage traveler, but i know that I’ll need this type of bag at some point in my life, so might as well buy once and buy well, I’m open to your recs

You still need to wash your clothes daily especially in hot climate weather. Anyone who says they don't wash for days because of the materials of merino wool, that's just nasty 😂

Please make a second part with specific bags for the specific categories

I'm in the exact same boat. 1 day's worth of clothes almost fills these bags.

I placed an order for the Tomtoc navigator T66 yesterday
And this came out today.
Would have been helpful if IT was out just a dya ago😂😂
This is true for some travel but going to a sweaty Caribbean trip with two messy young kids… nope. But when my wife and I take a couple’s holiday - 💯

You can buy anything you'll need in Thailand. As long as you're not xxl or xlt. Do not over pack.
@rmaa8110 yes I am trying to go super light and pick up as I go.
Been travelling like that for 20 years 🙏
How important is more light weight backpack ?
Eg : Paxt is heaver than Aer

Unfortunately I picked the wrong backpack. I love my AER TP3, great travel working bag not for exploring a country by trains & buses.
Great title. Any backpacks with a separate shoulder strap and possibly expandable?
What is your ONE recommendation for a non clamshell backpack for an EDC?
I would love to try merino wool, but no one has anything that fits me. I'm both big and tall, and while Unbound has tall, they stop one size too small for me, and their pants are both too short and too small in the waist.
I almost lost my keys when hooking them onto the niteize. Can u recommend a safer carabiner
Aer go pack 2 in the house😮!!!!!

Why don't you use CAD?
Xpac although a quality fabric is not for me. The material is too stiff and very difficult to break in
Vibes
What about “i have kids, need my hands free and pockets for their stuff?” :D
Great video! Just something that is probably a EU regulation - your toiletries must be in a transparent bag that can be closed.
You are my sifu 🫰🏻
9! ;)
