Dumaguete is not built to be a tourist city. Infrastructures aren't even built to cater to tourism but still expats are coming to the city. So if your visiting Dumaguete as a tourist don't expect Dumaguete to cash you out for a gimmick like how bohol is. Dumaguete will not treat you as a tourist, it will treat you like you are a local. So if you're in Dumaguete, try to be a local and mingle with locals 🙂
Good vlog Rod Dumaguete is one of the nicer small cities that I stayed at last April & May 2017, Valencia up in the hills is another area much cooler at night just a fan at night was great thanks for sharing, any road can be dangerous if you don't keep your whits about you lots of nice places to visit Ocean 24 swimming pools was a awesome place for 2 birthday parties I attended when on my holiday Great Videos love watching them thanks
Dumaguete seems to be a pretty nice city with most of what one would need or want. I was also trying to have some fun at the expense of the expats in Dumaguete. It would be nice to check out Valencia as well.
Liked your walk around as always. Your explanation are the best. You get so many other video guys that just walk around with no explanation of where they are or what they are doing. I like how you show the different hotels at different levels of cost.
Many cities in the Philippines have seen enormous growth in the last 10 years and they will continue to grow rapidly with more infrastructure expansion and foreign investments. Thanks for watching.
Hey mate. i did 4 days in Duma, just love that place, stayed in the other CL one block back from the water and big roof top area and a great view of all the boats coming in, Great hotel, great food, same type of Breaky, great prices, as like you I like to walk everywhere and will do 10 ks, just going up an down any and all the streets,, Thanks for the memories.. keep em coming. Such a nice looking and clean city compared to Cebu City. Silliman University has a great reputation and it's hospital is a branch of St. Lukes Medical Center in Manila. Also it was the first university built by the USA in all of Asia.
Is it as expensive as St. Lukes Bonifacio Global City ? Had to stay at St. Lukes BGC for 5 days for pneumonia 6 years ago. The cost was near 10k USD. I kid you not.
Hahaha! Another great video Rod! Nothing like a big city boy comin' into town and showing z locals the way a professional street crosser handles the threat of on coming traffic! Your videos are as always information laden and provide a great ground level experience! BTW A polkadot paint job in the bedroom will start your day with a little zing additionally maybe chase out unwanted guests? Just kidding! LOL! Sincerely BM
This city and Valencia are my favorite places in the Philippines. However, when my wife and I return I think we may try Palawan, Puerto Princesa for her nursing school. THANKS AGAIN!
Ahh. At last an answer to that age old question, Why did the expat cross the road ? Interesting video on a place I intend to visit next. Good job, as always.
road trip from dumaguete to talisay city (north) is a visual feast, esp. that road facing cebu cut by the tañon strait. the deep blue sea, verdant vegetations, rolling hills, the swaying sugarcanes (similar to the northern part of cebu) are priceless, picturesque eyecandies. personally, it's one of the best places for a road trip...
Amazing Philippines you can join motorriders club. they have regular scheduled weekend roadtrip not just in cebu (i think). i'd seen them in packs (sometimes more than a hundred) crisscrossing transcentral highway (cebu to toledo). indeed, what a long caravan! hehe click link below: Harley Davidson Motorcycle Club » 3rd Cebu Harley Days - Cebu, Philippines (SRP - Sugbu Park, Cebu) harleydavidsonmcclub.com/?p=22
I have seen smaller groups of Harleys in Cebu City. There is an event at IT Park in October I think. It is called Biketoberfest and lots of dealers and bikes including Harleys.
When you mention 8-9 peso for trikes you may want to mention that that is for shared or general rides. If you want solo it will cost more. Have seen and heard of a couple foreigners who got irate and started yelling and arguing about being cheated when they rode solo/special and were told the regular special fare
Again I love your vlog. Everything has been very good information. I’ll be going to Pangasinan Province for 3 weeks. To see my lady. Then travel the country for awhile. It will be in October. Possibly a little sooner. I have 4 weeks to wait on my passport. My wife had passed away a year and a half ago. We were married for 19 years. She was 58. I’m 54 now. I need to get away for awhile.
The Philippines was one of the places I was thinking of retiring to, but my health took a turn for the worst and I felt that it would be better for me to stay in America. I still watch the expat video's there.

Hilarious the sponsorship program. Thumbs up. Watched a few vids on Dumaguete (I'm staying in Manila). Looked nice but pretty boring. What's your impression ?
Dumaguete has +120k population, but during the day as people from other towns converged in the city for work the "daylight" population of Dumaguete balloons to +400k. Unfortunately, of that roughly 60%-70% of the households are in the minimum wage levels and lower. So generally its "a poor town" of limited entertainment but still have universities, malls, bars, restaurants, banks, and hotels! A true small big city! Retired expats preferred the city's lower cost of living, the small town ambiance, non-hectic activities, low pollution, too hospitable locals, some infrastructures and scenic sights, and general peacefulness of Dumaguete and immediate vicinity. But that's in the 80's to early 2000's. Now in 2020 its significantly less of those "small town vibe"...and more of increasing metro and the bad that comes with it. I missed the old, laidback, carefree Dumaguete 30 years ago (before when the students, the expats, and the workforce hadn't yet flocked to this city) as it perfectly fits to its moniker as the "City of Gentle People".
I like Dumaguete. I have been here several times. I guess it is hard to cross the street if you are totally drunk. Usually the drivers just go around you.
Looks like if you drive an auto or truck and parallel park on the side of the road you will have people park so tight on your front and rear that you would never be able to get back on your way without damaging someone's ride?
So funny when you said about dangerous street crossing in Dumaguete. And I guess Cebu city is the safest place to cross the street. Can't stop myself from laughing. Thanks Rod. 🤣🤣🤣
I pulled up a map of the Dumaguete area on an app called MAPS.ME and it looks like there are beaches and resorts pretty close going north and south marco but I am not sure how nice the beach is. You might try google earth app to also zoom into the area. Safe travels.
The "beach" you are referring to in the beginning of the video is the locally famous Rizal Boulevard, immediately East of the city center (note, the beach isn't truly Good for swimming). The boulevard runs basically parallel to Dumaguete's true and only main street...Perdices Street. From this street to the boulevard is just 2 blocks or
Bogart's is also a great place to eat over looking the water and in the evenings is a nice dive bar! Now a days, traffic can get pretty bad, but if you find a good driver, get his number and text him ahead of time. It pays to make friends and reward good service.
Is habal-habal a motorcycle back rider? is it a negotiated price ride ? or fix flat rate? do they have a distinguished look? how do you know one is a habal habal before flagging one for a ride?
Yes, motorbike taxi. No uniform usually. Some have neighborhood jackets. Yes, negotiate. There are a couple of companies like Angkas that work like Grab car and give you a price online for booking. Just hold out your hand or some you can book online.
This place reminds me of Cebu City in the early 80's before I left for the USA. Im 53 and will be retiring in 2 years and decided this is where I'm gonna be. Originally I was thinking of Cebu because my family still have properties in the City and a 5 hectare farm land in Carcar. I just couldn't stand the worsening traffic in Cebu and overcrowding.
Yup in 2020, Shakeys only branch store still surviving after all these years! Pizza Hut last around 2 years max! Too bad.... Got to do with small market size and tasty, affordable local competition.
I think it is in the city category Marco. It gets a top rating for foreigners because it has many of the things one would want but not as large as Cebu City and many other cities.
@@AmazingPhilippines1 I know he'll I've lived here sense 2003. Myself I have had problems crossing a street anywhere in the Philippines. Even Cebu I am a country boy raised in a big city . St Louis Mo. Thx
As I say about traffic in d city. It'd all go, no stop, everyone, everything. it's GO!! I am 70, was a patient at st Luke in manila, then had to flee the noise , poverty that all big cities harbor. My mom told me, if single, go to a small town in old age. someone will feed you, in big city you end up institutionalized. I come from Maui, took ill, moving to Hilo Hi., finally in poverty, rural Philippines, and live well.
That's like comparing Page (Arizona) with Las Vegas. Dumaguete isn't a full-fledged Sin City of Angeles City-caliber or will it become someday. Way, way, way.......far from it. Though there's lots of expats in Dumaguete, most are retirees having younger local partner. Night clubs exist here and there and few more, but it isn't WILD experience-wise. One more thing, showgirls, prosti, pimps are totally "look down upon" by the populace of this town city, so those people rarely exist. Lastly, customer "base" for this industry is just small in this town city that they could easily be out of business if they splurge in operating costs.
The expats that chooses Dumaguete are those who prefer to "live like a king" with what "meager" retirement pension they have. A few are there for serene surrounding places, some just prefer away from the hassle and bustle of big cities.
Dumaguete is not built to be a tourist city. Infrastructures aren't even built to cater to tourism but still expats are coming to the city. So if your visiting Dumaguete as a tourist don't expect Dumaguete to cash you out for a gimmick like how bohol is.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful comment Peter. I think you are correct about that. Dumaguete doesn't have the "touristy" feel.

Awesome! Thank you!
How about nightlife? Is it like Angeles City?
This is a small city and does not compare to Angeles City from all I have heard about that area.
Yeah Cebu City is much more challenging than Dumaguete to cross the street.....not a ton of traffic lights in Cebu City...lol
You are correct Tom. LOL.
social media share
Thanks for that theSTAR70.

You have solved the age old riddle..why did the chicken crossed the road!
LOL. Thanks Jerell.
Haha some humour Rod. Maybe the Dumaguete expats are whingers
Yes, I have to have a little fun once in a while. Looks like a nice city also Peter.
panning is too fast, i got dizzy... lol
Yes, it was a bit too fast. Thanks for watching Dennis.
Dumaguete #1 city for too many expats. Stay in Cebu...
I like Cebu City but it does have its challenges.
The expats that chooses Dumaguete are those who prefer to "live like a king" with what "meager" retirement pension they have.
A few are there for serene surrounding places, some just prefer away from the hassle and bustle of big cities.
Clean ???? Someone needs to take off their rose colored glasses.
Cleaner than Cebu City Charlie. Thanks for watching.
Bkit kaya hindi maraming tao jan ? hahaha
I am not sure why so not many people...if my translation is correct. Thanks for watching Roxy.
Your welcome sir Ang thank u to upload this vedio ' this my home ' dumaguete.

Learn to pronounce the name properly not Demagetty, but Dumbagete? You do hear other people pronouncing it???
Thanks Graham and take care.
lol....i’ve seen more deadly hit & run crossing the the streets of L.A. than in Dumaguete😂....so you are so inaccurate in your observation.
LOL. That was all said "tongue in cheek" joking about some of the people I heard complaining about crossing the road John.
whats wrong with your voice?
I lost my mind and my voice. Have you seen them? LOL.
What a mistake
Can you get weed ?
You can probably get it but it will land you in jail or a grave as they tend to shoot first and ask questions later Victor.
