About me: My name is Gio and I left the USA over 5 years ago to travel SE Asia and live a better life. Follow my journey as I travel around The Philippines showing everyday life and travels.
My channel: Reviewing different islands and cities in The Philippines as places to visit or live, condo and apartment reviews, dating tips, & how to travel and live inexpensively in The Philippines.
for Bohol did you mean Tagbilaran City? That looks like the only city on the island, no?
Cebu can be expensive.
I like to check Davao for sure.😃👍
Yessss 🙌 ! Davao is great and that’s where I’m from! Thanks for the nice words about our City!
@@elizabethmetteer2772 Davao is rather boring
I am glad you mentioned Davao. My asawa and I have a condo and other property there. Davao is safer than Calgary in western Canada where we are now. Next year we will be moving back to Davao permanently so my wife can be there to run a nearby beach resort she owns. As for the traffic, it is a lot better than the insanity that one encounters on the streets in Manila. In my humble opinion, Davao is the place to be.
Thank u for loving davao city
Is there a good cheaper safe place to recommend on the outskirts of Davao, more of the province living but not too far from a big mall.
Hi Bruce, I am in Calgary now, just retired. I am exploring for May/June. I will be in CDO and Davao to check them out. What is the name of the beach resort? It would be nice to support you and your wife. Also checking out Iloilo and Bacolod. Cam
I have been living in Davao for 3 years. A very friendly nice city with a couple of world class hospitals to care for senior ExPats. The cost of living is much lower than Manila combined with a low crime rate. Great malls. As mentioned in the video, Samal Island is close for a day trip or a weekend at The Paradise Island Resort.
Thank u for appreciating our beloved davao city
Im 63 yrs probably will be travelling next year , born and raised left south Cebu at 22 yrs.
Great overview Gio and I appreciate all you do! Take care my friend!
I have lived in the Philippines on and off since 1962. Why would you live in a City? They are crowded, noisy , hot, Polluted and dirty. The Philippines is an amazing place with many fantastic place to live. But Cities? I do not get it.
Restaurants, cultural events/resources, dating/women, gyms (selection), and much more.
I don’t get it either.Cities are so crowded and polluted and expensive to live.
I can't stand the cities either, here or in America. I love the simple life of Camiguin Island and living on the beach. Plenty of beautiful women.

I like it when people make a list of their favourite places. I know it's all according to taste, but I gives 'noobs' a good start at least. Thanks Gio.
Thanks Gio for choosing CDO as the number one best retirement city in the Philippines. It has all the best amenities every retiree is looking for just like Cebu and Davao but is less traffic and is less expensive. It is also strategically located a distance away from Cebu, Bohol, and Davao so traveling within these areas is very easy and accessible. CDO has also lots of things to do from nightlife to nature adventure that's why it's also called the "Adventure Capital of the Philippines." Plus the friendliness of the people being known as the city of golden friendship. The uptown area specifically is best for expats to reside overlooking Macajalar Bay. It is now growing and booming and will become the 4th metropolitan area in the country by 2025.
I will have to look into CDO as well
Traffic has really changed in Cebu. I've been going to Cebu for 20 years. And I can say traffic has improved.
Really informative video pal, thanks. I'm looking at heading over to do a bit of exploring your videos are really helpful
Was planning on visiting the Philippines this fall. Oh well, guess I'll just have to keep fly fishing in the South until stuff opens up again. Great video!
Thanks Gio for the video and information good to know take care
Hi! So glad to come across your channel and see this video! Thanks for this cool video! :)
Good stuff. Now just waiting for the country to open up!
Thank you. This was helpful. I didn't know about Valencia. Now I will definitely visit!
Nice video and thanks for featuring Davao City.
Good video, I personally like Cebu, Baguio and Bohol. Haven’t been to Valencia, Cagayan de Oro or Davao. I’ll check them out next.
Another great video Gio. Always informative and thought provoking content. Excellent.
I appreciate that!
Gio, Great vid. You covered all the bases. Very informative.
Glad it was helpful!
Baguio city is a wonderful place, far cooler climate. Met my wife there 30 yrs ago as fellow students w Youth With A Mission school during the earthquake of July 1990!
TC in Annapolis Maryland
Excellent video, Gio. Solid info. You are teaching us much about the lovely Philippines. Thank you, Jack
My pleasure!
Yes that’s true, cagayan de oro is the best, used to live there for 5 yrs, graduated there as well.me and my husband are planning to retire there someday.
Rented a car in Manila to go to the 100 islands. The drive in Manila is an adventure itself.
No restrictions
I wouldn't drive I just take the trains and buses..if you can figure out their routs. It's a lot cheaper and no worries about driving acrobatics.
I was in CDO for a week last September. I really like the city. I may retire there as my girlfriend lives in nearby Jasaan. I stayed at the Centrio Tower Condos next to Centrio mall. Centrio mall, SM mall and the older Gaisano mall share 1 street intersection. I also met a girl at SM Uptown. The people are very friendly. I could easily have 5 beautiful girlfriends there if I was so inclined, and I’m old and ugly. I also like Davao and Dipolog in Mindanao. I was never bored in these places.
I have been going to CDO for 16 years. My wife is from there, so I have seen it grow and have invested in three condos downtown by Ayala Mall and one to live in across the street from SM Mall uptown; as well as a business (if buying gas or diesel in Mindanao, look for my stations VELOX ENERGY logo is a red panther). I like the availability of Western amenities and am not limited to rural living because of a monthly income of under $2,000, which appears to be the commonality of expats living in places like Valencia outside Dumagete. If you are limited on funds, places like that are nice. However, I like a good steak (from Australia) or a Turkish coffee, a Costco type store and even a coffee and Dunkin Donut now and then. Wherever you end up in the Philippines you will find wonderful folks. Our ETA for staying permanently is 7/31/24 or sooner if Biden’s clown show makes living in the US unbearable.
@@jefflynch3946 :WOW!
@@jefflynch3946 I'm a US Navy Veteran living in Chicago just retired this year and can't wait to go back to Dipolog City (my birthplace) this coming December. I have many friends in CDO and will recommend to them your gas station. I often travel to Davao City by land via CDO and will surely stop by at your station as well. Let's go Brandon.
Good top five. I would have chosen CDO as #1 but earthquakes frighten me. Bad experience when I was 16. Hey, check out Iloilo and Baguio too, you might like it.
Good topic, keep up the good work!
Cebu has an international gateway airport, ports where ships sail everywhere in the Philippines, good hospitals, lots of entertainment and nature sites. There are also pockets of western standard places and the mountain and nearby areas are very scenic. But mostly the people are "modern", accepting of differences, speak English and more independent minded than in other places. On the other hand, traffic sucks, the poverty is depressing and you'll marvel at the sheer chaos of the electric wires.
@Cody J can cost a fortune and take forever to bury the wires and repairs become impossible plus technology is changing, by the time they are all buried they will be obselete too, better to just clean them up and get moving to improve the system
Is there any place in the philippines that doesnt have dangling electric wires? Wala din naman di ba
Great! My gf suggested cagayan de oro, is where she went to school as a young filipina.
I stayed in Claveria Cagayan and absolutely loved it..I was the only us 🇺🇸 citizen to stay at the rest house in 2 weeks.. beautiful coast line and mountains and quiet roads.
Hey you got the best blogs thanks for taking your sunglasses off
EXCELLENT INFORMATION. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Interesting video. I've been to Cebu. Lots to do. Thinking about moving there from Florida. May I ask how you handle your health insurance? Keep up the good work.
Thanks I know this is an old video but its great info. I know you are back by Cebu now. Thanks for the great content
The weather in Valencia is more like 2-3 degrees cooler. It’s worth is how pretty and chill it is.
Baguio Is worth the trip , suites me , cool and lots of coffee shops , plenty of girls
Nice video and very informative. And the cities you picked are very nice. I’ve got a place in Bukidnon malaybalay . It’s a very nice clean city there.
Thanks Gio, so many options that sound very good there. Thanks
You bet!
I have been to CDD just last year 2019 and i love it. Nice experience. Love the place.
It really is!
Thanks for the video. Planning my first trip to the Philippines in December.
Hope you enjoy it!
1st time seeing your channel Gio. Really good information & content ! So many bloggers in the Philippines you / Paul / Mark / Calvin all putting out great videos. You have opened my eyes to other places to retire in. Still have time in the US to work & get things in order before I do it. I'm getting close though at 64 if work wasn't as good as it is I'd be retired already.
My fiance lives in CDO ( opol) very nice people, I been going to CDO for the last three years now, I will be retiring there as soon as air travel is possible
Nice to know this information
Thanks
Good stuff. I also recommend Tagaytay in Cavite, Lipa in Batangas, Baguio, and the Angeles, Pampanga area.
Thanks for the tips!
Roxas Night Market was the happiest place in Davao for me. And samal island is one of the cool places in Davao. Thanks for this video.
Roxas night market pretty cool experience that. Up by night down by day.
We Filipino are always proud that lots foreigners likes to explore the beauty of Philippines and the people around it and thankful for your appreciation :)
Great list. I’ve spent a lot in CDO. Camiguin Island is Fantastic, and the coastline on the way to Iligan is breathtaking. I wouldn’t recommend Iligan though… many Muslins and some of them can be belligerent.
Cagayan de oro is my favorite place in the Philippines to date. However, I've never been to Cebu and my travels are only based on about 10 cities in the Philippines. Looking forward to going back in January.
Just what i’ve been waiting to see..thanks again for sharing. Does one hv to pay certain membership fee of sort to live in that coastal area?
Thank you for the information!
Great choices. 👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you.
Hi Gio,im glad that you choose CdeO as #1 city in the phils.to retire. Also known as the "City of golden friendship".Im living in one of the exclusive subdivisons here in uptown, its clean and fresh air and everything is accessible, private schools, church, mall, cafe, local and foriegn restaurants and soon to rise private hospital, and whats great is the food is fresh and cheap and also the hospitable and kind people!
Yea, I really love that area Emma :-)
May i ask the name of some of the exclusive subdivisions?
@@tomsorrell4918 Xavier Estates in uptown CDO is the most popular exclusive subdivision.
Hello Emma, I will be in CdeO soon, probably in June. And then also going to explore Davao City. I am really excited to explore the Philippines more. Any good accommodation suggestions are welcome. Thanks Cam
For me Cebu is the best choice. There are a lot of shopping malls, international airport, restaurants, beautiful beaches, hospitals, great tourist spots, mountains for hiking, no problem communicating with friendly locals, government offices , schools instructions are in English and Tagalog.
Great video I've been in Davao Philippines 3 times.... very nice like you said but I couldn't handle the pollution there I may be more sensitive I couldn't handle the deep fried food... pretty women and nice malls very friendly people
Thanks Gio! This sounds like this could be a good first visit as well, depending on how much time is available. Thanks for sharing! EW :)
Love these types of videos...
Loyal watcher.....
Thank you
Hi, like your video, but it would have helped, if you would've included maps of the locations that you are referencing. I think, people like visual aids in any presentation. Thank you for your work! Axel.
Next time, thanks for the suggestion.
Hi Gio nice video. I was in Cebu too crowded. Bohol Taglibarin nice not many restaurants when walking mainly in malls. Bohol very good tho. CDO very good but busy. Went and saw Tom from Tom and Ruths Phillipine Adventure. Maramag Mindinao seems very safe. Camiguin closed 😥. Stopped me..
It is true that the traffic in Cebu City is terrible but you don't have to live in Cebu City. I live in the south of Cebu & I love, love, love it here.....no traffic, quiet & no pollution. I'm close to the beaches, close to the church, close to the market & close to the municipal hall. This is a town next to the whale shark.
You need to include Golf.. theres a lot of golf courses in the Phil. Davao alone has 4 golf courses. Bowling, biking trails, motorcycle tourism
As I have been living in Dumaguete for 30 years, there is something I don't understand about CDO. It is just beside the sea but turns its back to it. No waterfront at all, except for the port but that doesn't count. The waterfront in Dumaguete adds so much to the quality of the city.
True
Just subbed from Annapolis maryland! Hoping to hear more of your English teaching experience. Married to a Filipina for 30 years and only in our 50s now but because of finances May be forced to retire in the Philippines someday.
In my playlist there is a teaching section
I have to agree with you about Cagayan de Oro, I lived there as well and it's my #1 choice!
I liked CDO too I haven't stayed for long though. Will try to have an extended stay next time round.
Its nice city don't take long get to province cdo i was my first visit in 2014.
Cool video thank you
You bet
Hi Gio,! First off, you did a good review of these 5 cities. However, you seemed to forget to mention how much is the rent to live in those cities. Anyway, You’re video is so helpful and informative! Cool.👍👍👍
Good point I would say they are all similar with Bohol being the least expensive then Valencia. Cebu and Davao being the highest in cost.
Aloha lads good stuff keep rolling good luck God bless
Thanks 👍
I live close to cagayan de oro or CDO as we call it. I love it here
I love davao city.people are very easy to get along with.prices of food is great and shelter ia not a problem as there are a lot of housing villages.
Thank you for the info.😊
My wife wants us to retire in CDO when we can. The city is close to her family n her old college friends...she likes uptown area as well n has an aunt living there.
Many others thing San Juan area of Siquijor Island is very nice. I have to agree.
If I went: Manila, Cebu, Subic are too big and maybe expensive. Dumaguete has comments about 'to hot', Valencia is really wet with rain almost every day during rainy season, Tagaytay sounds expensive and maybe to high elevation (?). I looked for a smaller, off the beaten trail city. Looked North and saw Aparri. ~60K, not as developed but it's growing and the government is putting resources into the area. New mall, etc.
Great video thank you
Thanks for the shortlist. Whenever I check places out to retire in the Philippines people always put malls near the top of the list as a reason for retiring there. Coming from the States, I think people are "malled out" here. They have been losing business here in the US for years. Part of the biggest attraction for me coming to the Philippines is the individual personalities of all the independent shops----the kind that were in my home town and surroundings when growing up. They have disappeared and been replaced with big box stores and online shopping. Maybe the malls there are an attraction for the quality of shopping so I might be misjudging them as a reason for wanting to be near them. Your thoughts?
It is true and I agree w Mr. Ron's comments. In addition, it is very hot and humid throughout the year that going inside a mall is a welcome break from your walks and commute under the scorching sun and is cheaper than paying for aircon electric bill at home. It's a past-time called malling, something "chill" to do. You will find many independent non-chain shops from rinky-dink to artisanal, hand-crafted, as well as local mom & pop services (e.g. tailoring/alterations, handwashed laundry, shoe repair, bicycle repair, computer repair, internet cafes, etc).
I cant understand why almost every expat talks about "malls" in PH land like they are some type of cool or great hang out due to restros or department stores or electronics... I dont think the people that rave about malls had enough of "malling" in the 80's and 90's in the USA and the crowds giant parking lots loud noises and buy buy buy mentality of the USA ... if that is the reason for expats to consider a place in PH as a "great" location ..more power to the mallies.. and it is alive and well in "retro" Ph land.. as for me .. tropical beaches ... local food and down to earth friendly locals is what I value about the Philippines.... you dont need to rush off to big polluted crowded cites and malls to find great experiences in the Philippines or friends and locals and nice folks on either the female or male side of life ...if you are a lonely expat in search of companionship :) my top 5 list is the province of Rizal , Subic area, southern Cebu island, northern Cebu island, and the provinces west of CDO ..in no particular order..all low cost clean friendly and safe... :) scratch the polluted cities if you are interested in real PH lifestyle
Hi Gio, thanks so much for this video. It’s very informative, especially that I'm trying to convince my Caucasian husband to retire there. I was born in Mindanao, and my family immigrated to the USA when I was eleven years old. That was over fifty years ago. I've visited the Philippines twice and once with my husband, and we had a wonderful time. I think I know where Cagayan De Oro and probably will consider visiting there once this pandemic is over and gone for good! Take care and be safe!
Glad it was helpful!
Cagayan de oro city is a 1st class city with everything you want and cost of living is more cheaper compared to cebu. Try visit cagayan de oro city
Great info for southern island experiences but one comparison left off was relative cost of living in these areas. Is Devao more expensive than Valencia? Etc ( beside AC costs). What about relative temps/rainy seasons? Cavite up north is low cost from what I see, but I don’t know about down there. Thanks.
I agree u gio, thats the best 5 list to retire in my country!!!🤗🙏😀😀🇵🇭
Thank you so much for sharing. I’m 66 yrs. old and on social security. Wow, the first city you mentioned was Cebu and that’s where I’ll be retiring to as soon as it opens to foreigners. I’ve been depending on your and other blogs which helped me to make my decision. Again, thank you.
Me too
Great video
Hi Gio, sitting here in Butte, MT freezing my tush and breathing the forest fires. Can’t wait for the Philippines to allow tourists back again. You know my personal favorite is Bayawan.
I have a story about how tight knit the people in the Philippines are. My brother-in-law has a blog, The Sky Is My Garden, on Facebook. He’s a widower, and met a Filipina, D, from Bayawan, who’s lived in Manila for years, through his blog several years ago. He went to the RP to meet D and is now working on getting D to the US on a fiancée visa. A friend, S, of my girl friend, E, friended my BIL’s fiancé, D, a few months ago. With me so far, ‘cause now comes the close knit part. D got in touch with S to talk about E’s aunt, A. A had recently died in Bayawan. It seems that when A and D were young women they boarded together (lived in the same boarding house) in Bayawan. In the US we talk about six degrees of separation, but in the RP I think it’s more like two degrees. Just something that struck an old man as interesting.
Great story sorry we never got to meet up.
I love Big Sky country . Speed limit was unlimited 25 years ago 😂🇨🇦👍👋
Bayawan is a nice place
well gio consider north BAGUIO cold weather and south STA ROSA LAGUNA (nuvali & enchanted kingdom) also TAGAYTAY..
Great video.
You never mentioned about the cost of living. Like how much for a house or apartment or condo! Nice video though! Well informed information. Appreciate it. Keep up the good work.
Here in US malls are closing or for sell or they’re talking about turn into apartment. Most people here don’t shop in the mall anymore they mostly shop on line.Groceries and department stores don’t have cashiers anymore we check our own groceries and we order our groceries by app and we just pick it up and if u live in the city they’ll deliver it for u
So pleased you love CDO, We have a house on Camiguin, my wife is a 6th grade teacher there, We live in Catarman
Would like to be acquainted with your wife. Thinking about how to teach there in the Philippines. Thanks.
Hey Gio, a good top 5, The Davao sounds like good place for medical at my age, but Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental uptown seems very interesting, a little bit city and good housing, and within reason to the beaches and islands ? Still hate the fact that I don’t know when the hell I’m gonna get to get over there, if this keeps dragging out I think I’m going to try Isla Providencia and San Andres, or on land on the coast of Colombia. The only thing missing is the no age spread difference pass we
Get in the Philippines , and that is hard to ignore :-(
Davao city has a good hospital and a very big big hospital with a modern equipments. We have also 911 same as other countries...
it's like anywhere else in the world safe areas not so safe areas mindanao is very nice place to live some Muslims but you will find good people of all walks of life as long as you are respectful to people anywhere really you will be fine remember please and thank you will take you far in the world
any thoughts to consider Bacolod city, do we miss anything so we can prepare and thanks
Another good vid man. How and why have you moved around and lived in those different places so much?
I came here to experience new things, new cities and experiences. Not quite ready to settle into 1 spot yet.
@@GiointhePhilippines try puerto galera or mindoro. it's expats favorite but i think it's already a quite dead area as tourism was taken over by other more famous places.. it's quite like subic olongapo
I will retire surely in Cebu. Easy access to international airport and health necessities
Angeles City for me as i wanna be around "adult fun" action.
An idea for a video might be what "Cooler cities" (weather-wise) are there for retirees. One is Baguio...another is Tagaytay...you need to find like 3 more...
edition.cnn.com/travel/article/philippines-coolest-towns/index.html
You want cooler cities. Antipolo in Manila, Bukidnon in Mindanao, Manolo Fortich in Mindanao
Baguio is always 8 degrees Celc cooler than the rest of the country.. It rains heavy though on August and September.. Its a city on top of high mountains..
@@semi5alpha Baguio is also more expensive for accommodation, I've been there for a day trip, the temperature was just like a spring day in England, I saw potatoes and strawberries growing, and the locals wear woolen jumpers or cardigans, nice sedate life.
I’ve studied the geography of the country and lots of the social and economic differences. From early on I’ve been a fan of Valencia, I’m happy to see you made it your #2. The only possible drawback I can imagine is landslides, due to the topography. Have you heard anything about that?
You don't see too many landslides there.
@@GiointhePhilippines thanks!
Enjoyed the video, Gio, but; Holy Moly,! As you were talking about the great rods in Bohol, the video looked like you almost got ran over by that white SUV jumping into you lane. Glad you survived!
lol
Thanks Gio, it’s great to hear everyone’s opinions on which city is the best, I am getting more confused 🤷♂️, Davao, CDO ...😂😂🤔
Both are good
I go for 1 hour from International airport don't like 2nd fight coming and going.Good Wi-Fi good power grid.
Baguio. It's the closest to Southern CA climate as you can get in the country.
baler, subic, banue, 100 islands, so many great places
Los Banos, Laguna, home of University of the Philippines- very nice
Agree, Baguio city is a wonderful place. Met my wife there 30 yrs ago as fellow students w Youth With A Mission school during the earthquake of July 1990!
TC in Annapolis Maryland
I like Baguio too because of the cooler climate.
Good video
I live in a small town in Cavite and the people are fantastic very friendly nothing spectacular I've been here 11years, maybe I don't like the high life due to my age but I and my wife and family love it.
Brother, i liked Cagayan too, but we had brownouts in the city about once a week. But that was about 5 years ago. Maybe they've improved.
It has improved a lot.
For myself i have too go with Davao, has everything one could want, people very nice, lots too do, yes there's traffic and my understanding is that Davao city is the biggest city in the world by land mass. That would be my place too retired. Enjoyed the video Gio.
