Hi Clayton, some info for you. A friend used a similar plate mounting for Rotax on kitfox 2. The Propeller failed in mid air and the extreme momentary vibration caused the engine to break away from the airplane! What saved his life was a steel cable between the engine and the airframe. He landed with minor damage to the plane. He installed a much heavier aluminum plate, and cable, during repairs.😊. Best wishes with your build. I loved helping build an avid.
Thanks for the info, I had that thought when I was making the plate but didn’t think it would be necessary. You mentioning that makes me know I have to do it now, thanks a lot. You could have just saved a life!
I will also add that my kitfox has a safety cable between the engine and fuselage firewall. In the event of some kind of major engine mount failure, the idea is that the plane will at least be within a reasonable weight and balance to get on the ground in one piece.
Dude! This is great content, please keep it up!!! The only problem is your videos are not coming out fast enough. Netflix has spoiled me, now I want every series to drop the whole season at once so I can Binge Watch. Lol
Hey Clayton. Love the content! Just an idea... maybe add a little broll of the work. For example when you drilled and tapped the holes for the Gearbox (I think that was it), or when you Tig and Mig Welded or cutting the tubing. Good stuff, keep it up!
Thanks! That’s a great idea I was thinking that too. I’ll have to pick up a GoPro because it’s all done on my phone then I can get more action in the videos
Thanks! It’s a skyraider 1 technically. It is the same airframe as the kitfox lite and other owners have renamed the frame through the years as well. Now Badland Aircraft owns the design
Great work. New subscriber. For what it's worth, stainless steel should be used for the firewall, aluminum will melt if you ever have a fuel fed fire in your engine. Barn find airplane rebuilds are my passion as well.
Yes, Stainless steel or titanium are used but even galvanized, but there is nothing in the regs that require it. And in this case you have a huge hole for the starter so there is no way that there is going to be a sealed fireproof barrier on this. Either originally or this rebuild.
What brake system are you using? Im building a Sonerai 2 also with a sled engine. I'm in Ontario quite a bit as well. Good videos, I'm trying to do a full build series and it can really add to the work load!
That’s awesome and yeah making a build series is a lot more work than I thought it would be. For the brakes I’m using the hydraulics that were hand brakes now converted to toe brakes
I enjoy your plane project. Enjoy. But I ride snowmobilies in the Tahoe area in California. I am trying to fix a 583 rave ski doo 1994 formula stx. Interested in where you got your engine rebuild parts and what you plan to do with the leftover snowmobile. Part it out on ebay? Congratulations on your engine start!!
I’m probably going to sell the leftover sled as a whole on Facebook. For the parts to rebuild I got it from Larry’s small engines in mono Ontario, not sure the supplier but maybe you can reach out
Pretty limited to where it can go, I put it as close the firewall as I could and moved the battery back as far as possible. May have to add ballast but will find out when wings are on and covered
On paper it’s a 10-15lbs increase with coolant but I never actually weighed the two. I will be getting a bigger battery and moving it further back to compensate
Yeah I have a chain hoist for engines but this engine isn’t too heavy on its own. I’ll be using it when I take the complete engine assembly off to cover the fuselage

Engine safety cables are golden IMO. So is a quality BRS parachute system.
Brilliant brake design! Nice project!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice video, lots of work to do, but I can tell its going to be nice when its done !!
Thanks! Definitely a lot of work left to do... :/

Hahah thanks! I wish it was done already, but it shouldn’t be too much longer and I can push everything out
Nice work, looks like a fun project.
Awesome project, can’t wait to see the finished product!
Hopefully I get to see it in person at some fly-in’s if ever you go to that sort of stuff.
I can’t wait too see it finished too! Definitely going to be taking it to some fly-ins in the future

looking great! So glad I found this channel!
Awesome! Thank you!
Love your engine hoist
💪💪
nice progress buddy awesome, :)
Thanks!
This is awesome, question though, I have not found anything on a "Mini Kitfox".
Thanks! It’s a skyraider 1 technically. It is the same airframe as the kitfox lite and other owners have renamed the frame through the years as well. Now Badland Aircraft owns the design
@@claytonwodiany Ah, thank's . Just my own preference but I would have put a 3 cylinder radial on her. Now that would be cool.
love this keep at it
Thanks, I like your channel. New subscriber

Where in Ontario are you located? Are you an EAA member? Black paint looks good!
Thanks! I’m located near CNY3 and not an eaa member

Make sure you do a weight and balance to see where to mount the engine.
Pretty limited to where it can go, I put it as close the firewall as I could and moved the battery back as far as possible. May have to add ballast but will find out when wings are on and covered
Just curious, what’s your background? What do you do for a living?
I went to school to be an airline pilot but now I buy, sell, fix and Airbnb houses
How’d you cut out the adapter plate?
I used a table saw and hole saws, then went over it with a sanding wheel
What’s the weight difference in engines?
On paper it’s a 10-15lbs increase with coolant but I never actually weighed the two. I will be getting a bigger battery and moving it further back to compensate
10:30: you can buy a rope block and tackle for little $$. perfect for small engines like yours
Yeah I have a chain hoist for engines but this engine isn’t too heavy on its own. I’ll be using it when I take the complete engine assembly off to cover the fuselage
If you just block the tail up to flying height it will lower that engine mount to make it more managable.
If you make the frame black you cannot see rust in future. White or silver I think. My 2 cents. Edit. Too late
That’s a good point, I’m not worried about rust because it will be kept indoors but cracks will be hard to spot
Is it a sky raider one or two?
It’s a Skyraider one. I’ve got a parts plane you may have seen that is pretty bent up and that one is a skyraider two
Do your weight and balance.
Definitely
You need gloves fella
Hahah I know
