Big Tires, Zero Weight Gain

  • Adding big tires to a plane usually comes at the cost of added weight. To compensating for the added weight I replaced the existing aluminum floor with carbon fibre and was able to lose the exact weight that was added by the bigger tires.
Here's why I wanted big tires,
    - You can land almost anywhere
    - In the event of an engine out you have more options and less likely to flip over on landing
    - Smoother ride on rough strips
    - Absorbs hard landings better
    - Added ground clearance means less likely to ground strike prop
    - Lifts the nose to increase angle of attack on takeoff helping to take off in less distance
why you wouldn't want big tires,
    - Adds drag which means more fuel burn or slower cruise speed
    - Adds weight which lengthens takeoff roll
    - Costs much more than standard tires
    - These tires wear faster on hard surface runways because of softer ply, meaning higher maintenance cost
This plane was abandoned and forgotten in a barn. It's a very low hour skyraider 1 built in the year 2000. It had a 50hp 2 stroke rotox considered to be the "high horsepower' option for the plane in its day. It's very closely related to the Kitfox or Avid aircraft which is a slightly larger 2 seat version.

Looking good pilot! Matco have some nice robust dual fork tailwheels that should also help with W&B if you need extra weight for the tail. As handy as you are, you'll probably build your own!👍

Haha I’ve been thinking about building a new tail wheel like the Matco actually! I’ll have to see how much weight is needed when it’s finished

Your battery placement you already have is going to help alot as I'm sure you already know. You many not need a whole lot extra. It will be interesting to see where you end up at.

@@claytonwodiany Know where I can get the taller vertical stabilizer and rudder like yours? I have the round assembly. I got my dual fork t-8 tail wheel today. Yea! Your cabin width is 24" model 1, right?

I’m hoping the battery should help out. I’m not sure where you can get one, maybe you can try badlands aircraft who still make the frame. And yeah it’s a skyraider 1 24”

@@claytonwodiany HeY Clayton! I got some feed back from Allen L that Josh at Wild West Aircraft is considering helping out fabricate items for Sky Raider. Might only be for the super though, not for sure. In case you have items you need. You're a very capable fabricator so likely you won't have a need, but just in case. How's your build going by the way? Just checking in to say hello and put this info out in case anyone may have a need. Weather getting nice here finally so with good spring weather hopefully all will be out enjoying it. Later, Brian
