I just upgraded from a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra to a Z Fold 5 and omg im in love with this phone. I get the argument of the cover screen being abut weird but the times i use it are the times i need to use my phone quickly and dont care too much. Every other time i need to do something meaningful on my phone i unfold it and that display is simply amazing.
With regards to the square aspect ratio and videos i have to disagree, i find that even though i get black bars the actually image being displayed is bigger than my Note 20 Ultra at a normal 16:9 aspect ratio and so i actually prefer it. The only things id say the S23 Ultra has over the fold 5 that make a big difference are the battery and S pen. The cameras are ofc much better on the S23 Ultra but not enough for me to prefer that phone.

You make several valid points, but different users have different preferences and the strength of Android is that there is something for everyone. I am now retired and do most media consumption on my Tab S8+ at home. I've rooted my phones in the early days of Android and have been a Note/Ultra user for years, but decided to try the Flip 4. I loved the pocketability of the phone, but found the coverscreen nearly useless and got tired of having to open the phone to actually use it. Traded it for the S23 Ultra. Given the new coverscreen size and the ability to use any app (via Good Lock), I traded my Ultra for the Flip 5 and am very happy with the phone; it meets my needs and is a joy to carry. I know the Ultra is superior, particularly the cameras - but I do not take a lot of photos, so the trade off is acceptable for me. (FYI - paid $759 for the Ultra (after trading in the Flip 4) got $900 trade-in value for the Ultra - so the 512 Gb Flip 5 cost me $99.) My point is that a lot of factors go into making an informed buying decision and there is something for everyone outside the walled garden.

  • @IAmJe

    No lies told.
This, plus the plethora of "my skin damaged, broke, cracked, peeled" on both Flip and Fold alike is off-putting. Then the PRICE with "meh" cameras lmao - the only reason I think they haven't given us the "evolved" Flip and Fold ( zero crease, Ultra camera's, S-Pen in the device spine, etcetera) is on purpose. They don't want to bring THAT to market because they need to follow it up with something. So they will slowly introduce these "upgrades" over time.
As I sit here with my beautiful unapologetic Tab S9 I'm loving it. No compromises. My biggest ask next is they put "Ultra" cameras on the S24 "mini" ..idk typing with two hands has been cramping my hand on my S22, it's easier to type on my S22U.
Regardless I can't be without those Ultra ZOOM camera's the clarity is unreal. 😂 I don't think we have space for traditional slabs and flips and folds. At some point, one will go away as market traction wasn't there or be merged into because they DO bring what is missing in the flip and fold. ALL devices have increased in price due to corporate greed, inflation, and just the ills of our world.

I have a Z Flip 3, and I think I'll stick with it a little bit longer. I love the Z Fold's design a lot, but I think it costs way too much for what it's worth.
If I were a designer at Samsung.
1: I firstly would remove the selfie camera on the inside entirely. There really is no use for it, especially when it's only 4 megapixels. Besides, you can literally just use the selfie cam on the front screen and either turn the phone around or fold it closed.
2: The hinge is almost perfect. All it needs is a few little tweaks here and there, and hopefully, it will be able to remove or reduce the amount of crease on the inner screen.
3: The inner screen should be less reflective. Much like the OnePlus open.
4: The front screen is pretty okay if you ask me. It's easy if not the EASIEST to use one-handed. However, from the looks of it. It is a headache to type on such a narrow screen. I wouldn't say it necessarily is HARD to type on it, but it would be really cool if Samsung could widen the screen by about 20%-25%.
5: The cameras obviously need an improvement. I mean, paying $1800 for a phone sounds pretty ridiculous, especially if its cameras are pretty mid (except the inner selfie, that one is utter trash).
And lastly 6: If you want people to buy more of these phones, you gotta reduce the price.

The title struck me as clickbaitish...and it took less than 2 minutes to confirm that. When he was trying to make it seem like the Z Fold 5 is bad for watching videos, he kept the device in portrait orientation, instead of turning it to landscape orientation as you should when you want a video to look as large as possible. How do small do RUclips videos look on the S23 Ultra when it's held in portrait orientation?
I just traded in my S22 Ultra, which is a great phone, for the Z Fold 5. The truth is that the Z Fold 5 is a game changer in comparison to any candy bar phone and worth the extra expense, as long as you're careful with your phones. There's no denying that the inner screen is still far more fragile than a conventional glass screen. But, it is also spectacular. Basically, if you can't be bothered to treat your phones carefully, then save your money, because you will most likely end up breaking it.
I'll make it as clear as I can...because if this inherent fragility, I would only recommend it to people who are typically able to keep their phones looking new while covering it with nothing more than a skin, a very thin case, or better yet, naked. Those of you who need to keep your phones in Otter cases in order to keep them looking good should probably stay away. And those whose phones always end up looking like they were in a car accident shoudn't even think about buying a foldable.

After having my Fold 2 for a month or so I couldn't go back to normal phones. The only thing the S23 Ultra over the Fold are better cameras, better battery life and an S-Pen silo. I already have an actual camera so anything a phone can do is pretty worthless for the photography I like, and the stuff the Fold does more than makes up for the lack of an S-Pen silo. I expect the new SoC to be a decent performer on battery as well.
My Fold 2 was €1000 (50%) off when I bought it new and my Fold 5 was €1229 (40% off). For that money there's nothing better imo. I use multitasking literally every day, from using Waze + Music in my car to just looking up multiple things while chatting with people. Apart from typing it's way better to use one handed because the screen is reachable, and when I do want to watch videos etc then I can just open it and have a way bigger canvas. It's perfect for watching stuff on public transport or planes, reading books or comics, taking pictures at odd angles (Flex mode has literally been a lifesaver at work) and video chatting with people. It's not for everyone but it definitely has earned its place in the lineup

Completely agree about the photography aspect - if you want to take good photos, use a proper camera! :-). I get the idea of having a camera with you wherever you go when integrated into a phone but for me, the camera is not the most important aspect of a phone. The only thing that concerns me about foldable phones is the longevity of the screen and the built in screen protector coming off but I gather it's all much better in/on the Fold 5. I bought the Fold and Flip 5 (I know, I know!) but I sent both back - I just didn't feel comforable about the darned crease - not because I could see it (how can you have a folding phone without a crease?!) but how long it would hold out and now, of course, I regret sending them back (doh me!!). The other thing that annoys me slightly is, like others have said, the inability to use the S-pen on the outer screen and the fact that it's not built into the phone in the first place - still, nothing in life is perfect!!

Ive had my Z Fold 5 for a few months now and its way better than any standard phone, theres only 1 problem I have with it and that's the screen ration problem allot of apps have.
I almost always have it open because thats what u are supposed to do, the front screen isn't the main screen.
As for the camera the Fold 5's camera and video is perfectly fine, u honestly dont need better unless u are a professional photographer, I mean it zooms into 30 times ffs mate, its a great camera so idk why everyone keeps saying its not good.
Oh and yea I do open the screen fully even when I'm on the go because the main screen is just better and the case I have doesnt really allow people use of the front screen.
There is nothing wrong with the average person buying a fold over the ultra which is just as expensive and has a much smaller screen.

It's funny to watch all the juveniles turn up here to defend their choice of either type of device to the death.
It's as if they feel compelled to defend their (subjective) preference by presenting it as fact.
Which type of phone you prefer ultimately depends on your use case, if you're using the folding function a lot and see no problems with it, then more power to you. But, if you're hardly using that function or forcing yourself to use it to justify paying the extra, then that's weak-mined behavior and it's on you to be more confident in what you need rather than what the marketing tell you that you need.
It's normal to be intrigued by new features and technology, but also important to be sensible enough to make intelligent decisions rather than let the marketing and hype own you.
There's no right or wrong at the end of the day, just know what you actually need and use rather than chase the latest and greatest thinking you need it. Essentially, this opinion piece is advising you to grow a pair and know what you need.

I agree with you. I have an earlier generation Fold that has been my secondary device and my primary device is an Ultra. The form factor of the front display is too narrow for me to type that well. I came from a Note to a Fold, and now I am essentially back in a Note-esc phone with the Ultra. It is an excellent form factor for phone activities. One more point:for 16:9 movies, because the Ultra is taller than the Z Fold, the 16:9 video is a little larger on the Ultra. For all other video aspect ratios smaller than 16:9, the videos are bigger on the Z Fold. So when I watch 16:9 movies, I don't gain anything with the Z Fold. I am still waiting for a Z Fold Pro with a bigger display, the Ultra's cameras, an integrated S-pen, and larger battery. When something like that happens, I'll probably get another Fold, or maybe it'll be a rollable =-D

The big screen like you mentioned doesn't even scale to.most media consumption due to its aspect ratio, you can only use the stylus in the inside screen and not the outside which.makes no sense, on top of this samsung now separates the cases that includ the stand and the spen slot, where as last year it was interchangeable. To top this off you lose some camera capabilities as well. Hopefully next year they get it right, Bigger battery, spen included working on the inside and outside screen, then I'm sold!
