    especially when it comes for women in the industry they usually want a very specific “look”, I know a lot of western ppl can’t understand how idols like hwasa are “breaking the mold” because they see her and they still see a thin and attractive woman that would be accepted here but in east Asia, especially SK, she doesn’t fit the celebrity beauty standard and it’s a step forward even if some people can’t see that

      Sorry to burst your bubble but Hwasa is NOWHERE NEAR being thin. She has a very healthy body type and curves. That's just the normal body type in the west that is admired. In Asia unfortunately it means your fat BUT let me clarify for Korea. The accepted body type slowly changes more to curves. Everytime you ask teens etc they hate that idols look so skinny and want a more real woman. It slowlyyyy changes unfortunately:/

    • @nalaa9618

      @Moon Jar She isn't periodt. You don't have a clue about body shapes if you think she is thin. She is definitely curvy. Just like she said herself when she was interviewed and that's why it was so difficult for her in this industry.

      What’s sad is Korean culture has a huge influence internationally so other people actually try to live up according to Korea’s umpteen strict if not very unnecessary beauty standards. Koreans have this thing for physical perfection and it’s sad that it’s part of their “culture” but that’s the thing about cultural differences I guess. Sometimes it’s not just about culture anymore, it’s about how people are so centered in beautifying one’s physical attributes and many people not just Koreans, has that toxic mindset contribute to depression and insecurity. It’s a sad world.

    Re: bright skin historically, it was also part of Europe’s historical culture. It symbolised wealth as it would show that you didn’t have to work in the fields. Tanned skin is recent preference, in the 1900’s it showed that you could afford airfare (only the elite could when it was first commercialised) and you’d get a tan from visiting these warmer ‘exotic’ countries. (I’m English just for context). Anyway, now pale skin is looked down on here, I’ve been bullied for being so pale for my whole life, even now as an adult in my 20’s. It’s funny how different beauty standards between different countries.

    • @niamhwatson
      @niamhwatson 4 года назад +9

      true, if pale skin wasn't a thing in Europe too before the "travelling boom", portraits of people in courts with white (and very toxic) makeup wouldn't exist.

      Charli Wat exactly! Lead based white powder was used by the nobles. It was and is still referred to as alabaster skin. I didn’t want to make it too long! It’s not that we can’t understand because it’s not a part of our culture, it’s just that the ideals here have drastically shifted, whilst the historical preference is still ever present there.

    • @peachesandcream8753
      @peachesandcream8753 4 года назад +6

      I'm English too and the change from pale to tanned was so sudden; Coco Chanel was the woman who made it popular. I'm also very pale and I love it, I'm trying my hardest to look like Snow White as much as possible, and I just ignore the comments. I like it so that's all that matters. The only gripe is finding foundation in a pale shade that is also olive (green) in undertone and not yellow or pink; that's become impossible to find. Pale skin also shows up ALL imperfections which is a great indicator to good or bad skin, which I think is another reason why cultures around the world favoured paler skin tones, since darker or tanned skin hides blemishes and scars.

    • @infearitrust4183
      @infearitrust4183 4 года назад +7

      i feel this! although i am glad to learn why tanning has stepped up. i am guessing it is also due to sports and athletic aspects being more admire (e.g.: the USA offering sports students scholarships?? what). it confused me for ages because in australia, they'd admire my freckles but say i'm too pale. in china they'd criticise my freckles and dots but compliment my skin tone. absolutely wack, so i've tried to stop 'fitting' into their preferences and it's been so good for my mental health.

      If you’re an “adult” in your 20s, according to some studies, you’re not actually an adult. But anyways, I’m not hear to give you a lesson. Yeah, you’re right, you can’t win anyway. People are always going to find ways to come at you. Just be yourself and break those foolish standards. Being bullied for being pale is just as bad as being bullied for being dark. Although the latter is more common, we should ignore the premier either.

That’s why it makes me worried as well,also don’t people realize that healthy skin is not tight all the time,it’s supposed to be plump otherwise it’s dehydrated (the reason why the no carbs diet has those results and why it’s bullshit)

      I personally think it depends om each person's body. Hmm let's see, itzy's member seems to have bigger muscle size if you compare to other group. Snsd's member, their muscle is not really visible well it's because they have smaller sizd (when they active, cause i don't know about their body now) cause they have smaller muscle. How much fat that you have also play a big part whether it's shown or not. Also the bump(i guess it's muscle knot) like usually the one behind the calf part, i think most people has, but there are also people who doesn't. Some people has it you know, the use their muscle a lot but their muscle is small, it has smtg to do with the fiber (i read it somewhere bout it) it's smtg similar to metabolism, for this i would take izone wonyoung as example. My junior high school friend is like that. She has smaller muscle than me, skinnier than me, but she's way stronger than me. In aditition she also do taekwondo. Although yeah, i'm not sure how much idol are like that.

    I just wanted to correct you about the fact that a pale skin is a criteria in the Asian culture since centuries and then western don't have it. Actually, yes we did, in Europe it was exactly the same, you had to be whiter to show that you were rich, it was a criteria of beauty. But in the 1920-30 when holidays were more common, people started to discover the beach side as a vacation place. So it started to be the opposite, you had a tan because you were rich enough to go on vacation and it became a criteria of beauty :) and later on the magazines and top models helped the trend.
    Very interesting video, so many absurd criterias...

    Being a girl it's really hard to follow along with the beauty standards of the society especially when you are Asian and as Indians are Asian as well .being an Indian I am shocked to know that how similar the standards and thoughts of both the countries are .this bright skin thing is like something today and the obsession with white skin is like oh my god .seriousy as a girl I have been through this and it's hard literally people want you to be as white as a dam white wall to be considered beautiful, they just want you to meet their demands. I am sure if you are Asian or Indian you might have dealt with this shit sometime in your life

    • @arayakashyap17
      @arayakashyap17 4 года назад +8

      Umm I'm also Indian, but I never really saw someone nearby me who prefers whiter skin. Like... Surely we do have beauty standard and that is present in every culture. But it's not being forced as much as they do in Korea. Because everyone there seem to want an image. Ofc there are people who thinks differently.
      Coming back to India topic, you see, unless you live in a closed off place or (sorry to say this but) lower class (in terms of financial and mental and lifestyle) people, you won't be hearing about it now.
      Surely Asian EVERYWHERE like to have fairer skin, it's not just. A country thingy. But India is no longer like that. It used to admire fair skinned people back in those days. But now, everyone is pretty much aware and accepting when it comes to these 'fair skin is more beautiful' thinking.
      I mean, even if I don't watch Bollywood and stuffs, I do know that the highest paid actresses are brown (deepika/priyanka).
      So my point is, you can't say Indian society and Korean society is same when it comes to beauty standards. No one here ever Bash/ridicule someone based on their looks/height/weight openly. No one choose people according to their looks in job interviews.
      Beauty standards are everywhere, but they are not strict and important enough to invade the normal societal activities.

      I don’t think you’ve met a lot of Indians then, lol. It’s literally a fact that the typical Indian standards prefer lighter skin. Look at all the actresses we have. All of the successful ones are never dusky and if they are, they often lighten their skin. If anything, the typical Indian standards didn’t include lighter skin back then, but it developed later on.

    • @sanjanaraveendran2074

      araya kashyap If you think colorism isn’t a thing in modern Indian society, then you’re living inside a bubble. You’re contradicting yourself when you say that Deepika and Priyanka are the highest paid actresses- Yes, they’re “brown” but both of them are still extremely lightskinned by Indian standards. Priyanka herself used to endorse Fair and Lovely, a whitening cream. There’s a certain privilege that comes with being light skinned in India and you can’t deny that.

    • @arayakashyap17
      @arayakashyap17 4 года назад +4

      @@sanjanaraveendran2074 I'm pretty much sure that my whole point of that longgg text was to explain that, YES, in India there is obviously a thing for whiter people. Because ASIAN everywhere loves that. They think that's prettier. Ofc not everyone. But this has been going on for ages and things has changed here.
      Why? Because majority of people don't have those white skin. It's only for the northern people who have them. (Few southern ones too). Meanwhile in SK, everyone there is mainly fair. So this makes them take things to next level. That would be "milky white clear pale skin" that they are obsessed with.
      And yes, I am certainly blessed with my living environment. And have been fortunate enough that no matter which state I lived (due to various reasons), I never found people who wished their kids were more whiter. Or someone who thinks the dark skin colours are unlikable.
      Well you maybe right when you say colorism is a thing in morden Indian society.. It has been thing for ages. Everywhere being "pretty/beautiful /handsome" gives you advantage. That is an undeniable harsh reality.
      But the whole point of my reply above was to tell you that. You CAN NOT label India and South Korea as same when it comes to beauty standards and the necessity to keep up with them.
      Surely you might land up at some job because you are pretty. That happens everywhere in this whole world. But beauty standards are not important enough to be taken into consideration when it comes to people finding jobs, making friends, being likable etc.

    • @arayakashyap17
      @arayakashyap17 4 года назад +4

      @@sanjanaraveendran2074 that is indeed a shitty thing. However, once again I'm saying. I did not say there is no colorism in india. I said it's not as much as it was before.
      And yeah I apologize for that "lower class" things, if you found it offensive. I already did say it (sorry in a bracket there, if you have noticed). It was because I could not find a word which would generalize the majority of people who have these kind of thinking. Meanwhile, I did say ts for people not only with financial but lifestyles, and mentality.
      And mentality is not something that can be developed over night. No matter how successful or how many great degrees a person have. If he/she can not even accept these simple things. And understand why it's wrong. They are all not educated in real terms.

As humans, our species have survived due to our wide variation of genes so consequently, we’re all meant to look different as a by-factor. Expecting someone to look one certain way, or trying to have a certain body or face is going against a key factor of our evolution and nature.

It's really interesting to see how people view beauty. But at the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think everyone and everything is beautiful. Don't look for outer beauty. Can't. It will drive you INSANE trying to live up to societies standards. 😊😘❤️

      @@artheaux666 No, not really. And yes, that is actually true over in the states. Like I said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Never did I say I consider "pale skin unattractive." And for anyone trying to twist what I've said, grow up. SERIOUSLY. You must be a child. People on here seem to be getting more immature. Everyone is beautiful. I wouldn't say any color was more attractive than another, because it's not. Simply facts. There are different beauty standards in every part of the world like Grace said. There are hundreds here in the US. I'm not going to continually defend what I say whenever I know what I meant. If I misspoke and it seemed I was being racist--don't know how that could be inferred--I wasn't. Learn to read and listen to what people are actually saying and not trying to pick and choose certain things and start some type of race or racist rant about. Really, grow the hell up.

      You're right, I'm always surprised by who my Korean friends find attractive/good-looking when it comes to white or other non-Asian folks. (Often very basic IMO) But I'm Korean American so I understand both American and Korean standards.
      In general though, people usually want or value features that aren't "common", so for Koreans => low cheeks bones (since high cheek bones are a common trait for us). It's why super models are super models - their body proportions represents such a small minority of the general population. It's elitism.

I think it has to do with how Europeans don't see so many asians same way Koreans don't see many white people, so their standards for them become lower, and they get their image mostly from media. White people have always had the best representation in media and they get most of the main roles of movies and stuff. So when Koreans see the media they get a positive image of them. White men have also gotten the idea that Asian women are all submissive and exotic which is why many fetishize them.

    For me "beauty standard" is meaningless like these two words can't be put togther coz you CAN'T set standards on BEAUTY and if you do then it's not beauty. Beauty has no limits,no colour,no region it's as free as a bird,its pure and it's original, YOU JUST CAN'T SET BOUNDARIES ON BEAUTY.its everywhere in every form,in every feature,in every body,in every person.You can not categorize it you just can't. Setting a beauty standard is the biggest mistake people can ever do.each and every person itself defines a different form of beauty.EVERY SINGLE PERSON IS BEAUTY. You look different,you have a face a body a persona that no one in the population of 8 B people have,isn't that beauty itself? Isn't that the most beautiful thing of this nature? Isn't your unique nose,cheekbones,waist,body type,complexion a beauty standard itself? coz you ARE BEAUTIFUL. then why to look for the worthless beauty "standards" set by others? True beauty has no standards to it,nobody can put bars on it,nobody can fix a particular definition for it,if they do then they are stupid and such people can't accept themselves either that's why they set a standard for every one and follow it themselves as well no matter even if it erases their true persona and their unique body and face type.You are beauty,your features,your body type,your fashion,your make up,your hair is a beauty standard itself don't try to look like others or follow other beauty standard and ruin your rare beauty. Just don't!
    Acknowledge the beauty the nature and your mom and dad has gifted you embrace yourself and love yourself!
