Thanks to the Town of Swampscott for allowing me access to photograph the building.
Graduated from that school, Swampscott High, Class of 1969...Marianne Mongrello. My Mom, Virginia Pallitta, graduated from SHS, class of 1948. Sad to see it torn down, magnificent architecture that I never appreciated while I was there.
Since I joined the high school marching and concert bands in seventh grade, and since that was the (senior) HIGH SCHOOL, grades 10-12, back in those days, where we had band practice, I was there for six years. Yes, it was three years as a student, but six years for band practice and getting ready for games. What was bad was the total lack of outdoor physical education facilities. Too bad these buildings get old and need to be torn down.
Went there when it was the high school. Would have graduated 1973 but dropped out & went to work as a mechanic early. Lot's of good memories !! What a view looking out over fisherman's beach in the fall .
Crazy I went here for 7 and 8th grade in the beginning you'll see someone say we miss you Mr andrake haha he was my teacher also back in 96... not much has changed
In math class one day, the student behind me was moving his legs up and down in his seat, apparently reaching the resonant frequency of the floor as it seemed that the floor moved up and down for a bit.
7th and 8th grade for me - definitely spent some time in the principals office
Brings back memories and I'm proud to say I broke my arm behind that building
My father taught at SHS from 1957 though 1975. His room was the corner room, second
floor, looking out the back and down onto Fuller Ave, where the path used to come up.
Those days were golden for Swampscott schools, the beginning of probably the best era
in education for this town. It's kind of a mess now and has been for some time. I do think
it's beginning to turn around now that there's a solid and home grown administration, one
that understands the town and its needs and goals. Seeing this really brings nostalgia.
Also sadness because the town has let this stretch out so long. This building had
character and lofty educational ideals embodied in a dedicated and hard working staff
and teachers. Here's hoping that all returns.
Although I never had it as a school, I spent many hours in dad's office (at the 4:00 mark). Sorry to see the place dormant for so long.
Live down the street
I drove by it basically every day to get to school
look at it now jesus
why demolish a perfectly good school?
it was far from "perfectly good". trust me I went there 8th grade in the late 80s.
It was a shit hole that was falling apart in its last years.
2:20 you can see a shadow...... Creepy looks very different then the current sms I go there now.........
The panning is pretty annoying...could have done without the PP special effects...

And here we sit ...10 years later...and it still stands...decaying unto itself as a small minority of residents try to prevent the entire town from benefiting from the tax revenue this could have been generating over the past 7-8 years. But if you want to live next to an empty, decaying, hazardous building for the next 10+ years...keep it up.
