Crazy to think that Priest had already been a band for over 20 years by this album. They could've been typecast as a 70s band but got "grandfathered into" the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" in the late 70s (with newer bands like Iron Maiden). They were one of the first bands I'm aware of to call themselves a "heavy metal band" and take pride in it. Before them it was usually called "acid rock" or just "hard rock". I've heard it said that "Black Sabbath invented heavy metal.. Judas Priest perfected it."

"Hell Patrol" is my favourite song from the Painkiller album. Whereas Iron Maiden is defined by their galloping rhythms, Judas Priest is defined by their mid-tempo grooves. Another great example is "Revelations" from the album Nostradamus. It's a great album, but because they use synth guitars on some tracks the songs don't have the same bite or crunch as their heavier material.

This is 90's Priest. Just remember, Judas Priest have been around for 40+ years, so they have a huge set list of music that covers every style of rock music you can think of, and his voice was one of the best. In the early 80's Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were at the top of their game and were considered pretty heavy for their time. I've been to many Priest concerts and they were all great, They always had a great stage show and they always performed well. Good memories...If you like the heavier sound, give 'Freewheel Burning' a listen off the 'Defenders Of The Faith' album, I thought it was a pretty heavy song for its time. (still don't know the words!).

I still listen to this at the gym a lot :) And yeah, Priest were awesome live, saw them many times. The thing I love most about them is how much they evolved with the times and got heavier, faster, and more proficient... and playing heavier metal music essentially meant they could utilize more of their musicianship, which they've mentioned in interviews before :)

Painkiller is hands down Priest's best album, but far from the only good one. Later on in the 90's, Rob Halford split with the band (1991 - 2003) & they had a new lead singer (Ripper Owens) which changed the sound of their music but it was still good. Rob even did some vocals on the first album Jugulator. They only made 2 albums with Ripper (Jugulator & Demolition) which are both good & you should definitely check out. When Rob split from Priest, he formed a new thrash metal band called Fight, but they only made 2 albums, Fight: War of Words, & A Small Deadly Space, the first one being the best. "Into The Pit" from War of Words is one of my favorite Fight songs. Give it a listen! ruclips.net/video/KAtxYftCIyA/видео.html

Painkiller is probably my favorite Priest album, to be honest. Like someone else commented, prior to Painkiller's release Judas Priest (in my eyes anyway) had kinda been placed in more of a hard rock category. I was in my mid-teens, was a beginning musician (drums) and was more focused on bands that had more of a "metal percussion" feel (double bass, odd time signatures, faster tempos, etc.) and older bands like Priest didn't really highlight that. Then Painkiller came out with Scott Travis taking over behind the drum kit, the stars aligned, and we were graced with a metal masterpiece \m/

    This song IS GREAT....
    But, in my honest opinion....
It's a buffer between Painkiller and the rest of the album...….
The next song, "All Guns Blazing"
    Is going to destroy!!!!
Metal Meltdown showcases Rob's voice almost like no other song....
The Finale, "One Shot at Glory"
    Or
    ...…."Hammer and the Anvil"....
    This whole album just DESTROYS!!!!

Honestly, after hearing much of priest catalog I will say that breaking the law is pop. There are no priest songs that sound like breaking the law.
