  • Everyone who visits Yellowstone on a frequent basis is eager to know if the golden eagles are nesting at Slough Creek. And, first time visitors hear about the golden pair on social media and go looking for the nest.
But, this is the first time I have capture the male golden eagle flying to his mate, golden eagle #62, banded by researchers, and mating. This female golden eagle, #62 and sporting an antenna pack on her back, is much larger than her mate and a force to be reckoned with. I've had the pleasure of watching the two eagles many times over this winter season as they fly above the Lamar River and Soda Butte Creek, looking for a duck feast, and am rooting for the pair.
Recently, I learned that the golden eagle research is being conducted in an attempt to learn why they are not successful with raising their young. I'm told that their numbers are good but the reproduction rate is not, so am assuming that they could decline if that continues. The very first golden eagle banded in Yellowstone was the original Slough Creek female and she, unfortunately, died only two months later from lead poisoning. So, her short participation in the study was important as we grapple with the effect of lead bullets on wildlife and raptors that consume gut piles left from hunters.

Golden Eagle se× tape! Haha. They're beautiful birds. I expected them to fly and plummet toward the ground while they did that like a bald eagle.

From what I read about the goldens mating, recently, they are supposed to lock talons and plummet, while mating. And, they are supposed to release talons right before hitting ground. I found a pair of golden eagles, talons locked together, on the ground several days ago and so looked for the mating information.
