- The Boston Celtics have arguably started off the 2023 NBA Playoffs looking more sound and complete than any other team that still remains. And while some would have expected this to be the case with the stellar play of their stars in Jayson Tatum & Jaylen Brown throughout the season, along with the above average coaching of HC Joe Mazzulla in his first year, there might some things the Celtics are trying to pull off that we’re not used to them attempting.
Aside from JT & JB clearly leading this team, they are obviously full of playmakers and facilitators in guys like Marcus Smart, Malcolm Brogdon, and even Al Horford can do the trick at times. But the man that has made the biggest jump for the Cs this year, and especially so far in the 2023 NBA Postseason, is Derrick White. With Derrick White not just excelling in scoring, but also by operating the offense himself, the full Celtics rotation also including Robert Williams, Sam Hauser, Luke Kornet, and potentially even Grant Williams and Payton Pritchard if need be, the Celtics offense is operating in ways that are leaving teams like the Atlanta Hawks with no valid answers.
And if the coaching of Joe Mazulla keeps up in this regard, even the Celtics defense could make a run to be more impressive than their offensive output. And if that’s the case, Boston could find themselves sitting as a two-way juggernaut for whoever might get in their way on the road to a 2023 NBA Finals appearance.

The most surprising part for me is definitely Derrick White. It's like the Celtics have a 3 hall of fame scorers out there. And still have a very good sixth man of the year to come in and get buckets. The absolute firepower of this team is amazing. Celtics are winning the 2023 NBA Championship as long as they stay healthy.
Derrick White, as Gregg Popovich said, is a player who has a natural feel for the game. He has a knack for knowing when is the best time for him to score. He is a player who adjusts to his team’s needs. The perfect fit next to 2 elite score first mentality all star players.

Also love that Brogdon has completely accepted his bench role and is going crazy. They put it best on Inside the NBA the other day: he's essentially just a sixth starter that beats up the other team's bench, and then takes over for Smart to put in work with the other starters later in the game. He could easily be 2-5 option (maybe 3-5 on Boston lol), but he knows that as the newcomer to the team it makes more sense to keep the main 5 intact for chemistry purposes. True team player and true six man. Boy oh boy are we gonna have some salary issues though lmaooooo

As a Celts fan, I can honestly admit when we got Derrick White last year, I thought..."Ok, another scrappy defender. I guess that's good for us". But he seemed to get better by the day, and by this year's playoffs it's getting damn hard not to say he might be the third biggest star on this team, and this Celts team is ridiculously deep with Time Lord, Al Horford, Malcolm Brogden, Smart, and I haven't even mentioned contributors like Grant Williams and big time 3-pt shooter Sam Horford, and then even Kornet, Pritchard and Griffin have chipped in. With all this talent on team, White has emerged as the most consistent contributor, and he just never seems to have an off night. We ordered hamburger, but what we have here is prime wagu steak, lol. I'll take it!

Nope people don’t forget. They weren’t aware of it in the first place or don’t care at all. That is the case when a player is in a small market team like San Antonio. Derrick White is already a well established player in San Antonio but Celtics fans being oblivious to his past only look at the time from when he got to the Celtics where he is still adjusting to the new system in Boston and the team still does not utilize him optimally to now when he already has an established role in the team.

I love Derrick White! I wish he was my grandson. Because if he was, I would be bragging about him incessantly. He's intelligent, humble yet confident and such a powerful force on the court. He reminds me of the hockey great Bobby Orr. Like Orr, he outshines everyone in the game. Go Celtics...win it all for the grandmas!

I think what makes the Celtics so special is that Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum don't need the ball in their hands to make an impact. They play great defense and (can be) very efficient with the ball, both in terms of how long they spend with the ball and shot-making efficiency. This allow them to play off-ball and hunt mismatches while also giving other players like Smart and White, to show their strengths.
Good size at 6'5", can play both guard positions, plays great defense, great slasher and off-ball movement, can shoot the three. Derrick White is the perfect fit in Boston. This is what I thought we were getting when we traded for him, it just took a while for him to figure out his role on this team. But if he plays like he has been, Boston will be very hard to beat.
As a celtics fan I am so used to them just chilling on the perimeter now they are going in the paint and scoring efficiently at a high volume
Underlooked part of d.white and the team is the chemistry that is obvious. They love playing for each other, and they know their roles and they look like they're having fun most of the time.
we love D white in boston he’s become a fan favorite, its gonna be hard to stop here in the post season cuz they can try doubling tatum or brown but now we have another elite scorer and playmaker in Derrick white i dont know how anyones gonna solve it

Derrick White is definitely a fan favorite. As in, a Spurs fan favorite. I think the Celtics are the team most Spurs fans are rooting for since we are tanking now. Also, y'all are against Dejounte so we are double pulling for the Celtics.
Boston's depth is what makes them scary. JT and JB need no introduction but something I think that defines championship level teams not just in basketball but in all sports is verity. The ability to score, defend, and win in a variety of ways and a lot of depth pieces to allow for leaves you with very little weakness to exploit.
If a team dominates the paint but can't shoot 3s, you can clog lanes and force them to shoot. If a team's scoring depends on 1 superstar double team him and force the role players to beat you. You cant take that simple approach to Boston because can win in so many types of games with different guys as the focal point. The biggest thing is for them to not beat themselves
Derrick White is quite reminiscent of another Celtic White, namely JoJo. The latter also had remarkable touch on his floaters and that uncanny ability to finish in the paint in a crowd.

Derrick White is outstanding. To me he's Bostons silent assassin. Whether shooting threes, which seems always at a time when the Celtics need it most, it's his ability to take the ball to the well that impresses me most. Of course when you play on a team stacked with All Stars it opens up others to feed on the open buffet. These guys are very good and very deep. Mental mistakes are their worse enemy but I can't see any team beating these guys in a 7 game series.
D white and brogdon are our x factors especially when brown and tatum rest...they both have been huge

U said his numbers weren’t great in 2022 and I thought the complete opposite. Idk what his stats were I just remember him never disappointing and always being a super reliable option last year. He was a big piece for that Celtics run last year and I’m callin cap on the numbers cause I watched almost every Celtics postseason game last year and always talked him up

Since last year I Knew DW was a good trade . It was a matter of time for him to be comfortable with the C’s offense and Defense schemes . DW was showing flashes since last year and how vital his play making will be however Celtics fans were very impatient nonetheless Derrick White was one of my favorite trade including Danilo Gallinari! They both are match up nightmares for the opponents!!!

D-White has definitely played himself onto the 1st or 2nd All-Defensive team. This year he's been much a better defender than Smart on a night to night basis.

I mean it makes sense to me, I’m a bucks fan, I remember when they got White from the spurs I was like 😬 a lil nervous. The spurs hadn’t made a lot of noise in recent years, but his name still kept popping up. He proved he can run an offense out there. Now he has two people who’s defenders are not going to sag off of them to help create a double team and the other two defenders aren’t going to want to leave a big man in the hole. Basically the only team that can beat them is one with a PG who can lock down anybody like Jrue Holiday. I think if it’s a Bucks/Celtics ECF whoever wins that (if they are healthy) almost automatically wins the whole thing.

most surprising part to me is derrick white is having a far better defensive season than Marcus smart, although Marcus was injured a decent amount, white still leads all guards in total blocks.

Why I say how slow the Celtics were playing in the 3rd quarter, I thought they would loose this game. They had no hustle in the last 2 quarters.

The Celtics are focused on the task at hand - grant will need his body in fully health for Embiid and Giannis. I would be shocked if he doesn’t play either of those series. Right now we don’t “need” him so we’re saving him. Same with Blake. Blake is just a body we can use on the big boys and they both take charges. It’s honestly so sick hahah equipped for many situations as he alluded to in the video

Yeah but Hawks are trash so the small sample size is skewed. A better metric is the eye test the entire season where JT, JB, Smart, Horford, RobWil, Brogdon, missing large parts of the season, DWhite was literally the only player in every night leading the offense, but more importantly, the entire team. DWhite and Brogdon brought a fully manned Bucks in tryhard mode to OT without ANY Celtic starters

I think White will keep getting better and will be more valuable long term to the Cs since they can save $25-30 million to sign another player. I think for the price that JB wants you can keep White and Brogdon.
