- France’s men’s basketball team, already having their ticket punched for the 2024 Summer Olympics, are in the process of playing exhibition games while the Basketball Olympic Qualifying Tournament takes place. And in the meantime, these friendly games for France vs Germany, Turkey, etc. are giving us a first glimpse at the pairing of Victor Wembanyama from the San Antonio Spurs and Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves on the court together. And as you might’ve expected, this duo is far more terrifying than we could’ve even imagined.
Let’s start with the France offense. The frontcourt of Wemby and Rudy for the French is absurd on almost every front. Whether it be regarding the pick and roll, high-low offense, even their isolation play, France clearly is going to be a force once the Olympic basketball games roll around.
And the same can be said regarding the defense for France. Having both Wembanyama and Gobert being able to serve as anchors at the bottom of the paint, the rest of this roster is able to act freely defensively. And when you’re talking about pieces like Guerschon Yabusele, Matthias Lessort, Bilal Coulibaly, Theo Maledon, Frank Ntilikina, Evan Fournier, Nicholas Batum, etc, they are one of the most entertaining teams we will have to watch in the 2024 Olympics.

Wemby and Rudy are only the visible part of the iceberg. There are many exceptional players in France team. Bilal Coulibaly has a great basketball IQ and he is also a multirole player, able to aggressively defend and score when necessary. Mathias lessor is also a thought power forward defender. France games will be very interesting to follow.

I doubt anyone will believe me but last year, I finally played some 2k after stopping since 2k16. I played cuz I wanted to be wemby. So I started a new gm with the spurs. I added cp3 for the point and gobert at the 5, to keep wemby at the 4.

I played as the Spurs in a season game, like a regular running game against Detroit or somebody, and Wemby felt like cheating. Felt like I had inserted MyPlayer into a place it didn't belong.
Wemby has also grown if you don't believe me look at the picture of him standing next to Rudy he is at least 4 to 5 inches taller

Every time I see a contest on his fadeaway I just get flashbacks to the Kawhi incident where he landed on a foot and was never the same again.
The PnR is incredible, the improvement in long range shooting is shocking, but man that mid-range iso from a difficult angle? The Mein Gott from the on-air commentary may have been German, but it spoke for all of us.
Don't forget that when Gobert gets a little old and slow in a few years, Alex Sarr will be hitting his prime to continue this prime duo. Not to mention to 6ft 9 blokes in Risacher, Salaun (both 2024 drafts picks 1 and 6) and Essengure (2025 nba first rounder), possibly led by Traore (2025 nba mock draft pick 2). And thats adding to what they already have. France vs USA will be insane over the next decade.

As good as Gobert and Wembanyama are, I don't think they can beat team USA. Team USA is the most stacked team in the olympics this year and they have Durant, Embiid, and AD to cover both Gobert and Wembanyama as well as other weopons like Steph, Booker, Ant, Lebron, and the rest of the squad to cover the other areas of the court.

I hope with this team, even we miss Poirier to polish in that sector, we will have a medal. But as we see in the second game against Germany, we have a lot of work to do at free throw (7/18 in that game and lose). Wenby/Gobert is a good combo, but we will need all players to be at their prime to go in a long run. USA, Germany, Lituania look scary as well

One point of note on the 3pt shooting. FIBA arc is 22 ft, 1.75 in while the NBA arc is 23ft 9in. I reckon you have to expect a higher 3pt % under FIBA rules

Just natural evolution eventually all the players will start having handles. Magic Johnson was the first tall point guard which led to Penny hardaway and LeBron James. Eventually it's going to be a league full of 6'8 and up players.
some things are unobtainable through simple evolution - to be a player like Wemby it's not enough to be tall and practice handles - you need to win a genetic lottery, even by NBA standards, to be this tall while being this fast and agile, as well as having his body coordination and basketball IQ - the only way to make players like him more prevalent would be to start modify people on the genetic level
@@jakubdovgosheya5053 That's true And the reason why he's that way is because he has two parents that were professional athletes well I'm not sure if they were necessarily professional what they were pretty good athletes. They started him off early playing the point guard position even though he was taller than everybody. The problem with youth sports if you have any kind of height on you they automatically make you play center. He didn't just play center he learned every position. He was like 5'11 and 6th grade or something like that So learning how to play point guard at that height is essentially playing at the same height as Chris Paul and trey young. He just ended up growing to be 7'4. So if these youth coaches start making everybody learn every position and focusing more on ball handling and shooting then we will see more athletes closest to that height being able to play any position on the floor.

Exhibition? That's not the exact word, those are preparation games, and while the first was vs "almost on holiday" Turkey, that second was vs world champ and Olympics qualified Germany. OK they were missing a couple of players and they probably don't need as much tuning to their game as France does so they don't need to show all their cards (France and Germany will meet in the group phase of the Olympics tournament, and are set to play another friendly this week in Montpellier).. but still, they're not just for shows, they are the first game experiments of "Wemby's France", with a clear short term objective.
He already played two qualifying games for France in 2022, but it's the first time with Gobert.
Keep in mind that there are new players that are coming in for the next championship, Sarr and Risacher for example...! 😅

The shame is Embiid should and could have played for France as well. Even as an American, I would have loved to see those 3 play for France, and to see the rest of the American NBA team go up against that, would have been something spectacular.
