It's the poor seal at the brew head and not the piercing. The 3 needle points on the bottom side are for water input, so they pierce through. The bottom foil is meant to be only partially pierced during high pressure brewing when the foil expands and "cuts" itself partially on those square grill marks. If the bottom is fully pierced, then it would greatly reduce the pressure and the water would just flow right through. Official Nespresso pods have a precise thickness of that foil. I find a lot of after-market Nespresso pods have issues with that foil, even in Nespresso's own machine. I think Mr. Coffee designed the piercing process for the Nespresso's own pod design and doesn't factor in variations from after-market brands. When the foil didn't pierce as well, pressure got built up at the brew head so water leaked. If the brew head has a better seal, it would create enough pressure to do a better piercing on the foil side. I think Starbucks is the only pod you showed that's "authentic" Nespresso pod - it's supposed to be foil all around for easier recycling.

Does your machine work well using original Nespresso capsules?

Some pod brands causes leak as also noted in some K- cup brands. In other words not all pods are created the same.

You should not be pushing it in, just screw the bottom piece in, it will punch the holes on both ends!

Huello Dad. Can you tell me if we can use reusable capsule pod for this machine and if we so, how to ask for it at the time to buy it. Thank you.

Hi, do you have an update on this? I wanted to order this machine for the regular use of it and not the pods. What drew me to this was the 20 bars. Do you recommend this one or the old version still? Thanks

I don't recommend this one, I never got the Nespresso pods to work

Seems like the machine has a poor seal….I think the pod gets pierced when the pump puts pressure on the capsule. Be interesting to see how an actual Nespresso brand pod works.

The Nespresso pods didn't work because it's not Nespresso official cups.

The older one does not work with pods, it only uses ground coffee, it works much better than this one.
