Thanks for your great work.
This actually got my heart racing. Hearing an actual scam and someone's attempts to thwart it is pretty high-octane stuff.

A few years back, I got a call from "technical services" and was told that they had detected a problem with my computer. I asked what company they were with and the answer was "the company that made your computer." Odd, I've been building my own computers for thirty years. So I told the guy that I didn't have a computer.
I was then told that everyone has a computer. Not me. He asked how I got information. I told him that God told me everything that I needed to know.
What ensued was a twenty minute long argument about the nature of God and whether he communicates with people. I was driving so it was entertainment for the trip and I kept him from bothering other people.

Best way to avoid them: If someone calls you from "the bank" or from the "IRS" and they say u own them money, hang up. A proper government institution that you would own money will never ever call you. They only send a letter to your address.
Depends on the country, for example in South Africa there is an official credit collection agency that contacts you for tax related matters.
I forgot to pay an admin penalty and they called me by surprise, boy was I red in the face after swearing at the poor lady on the phone.
A proper government institution won't call you. They just send a group of armed men to your door lol
if they call you they never ask for any details, they already know them. and most communication is done by letter.
