- Finishing out a group of replacement gilts rejects & runts.
Switching to regimented feeding and our waste stream feed blend.
I (Jordan) and my wife, Laura, own and operate J & L Green Farm in Virginia. It has been our full time occupation for the last 12 years building this first generation, pasture based, direct to retail farm. We are in the small percentage of farmers that actually make their income from farming. As such we address our farm as a business and make decisions with that in mind. What you see here is what it takes. No BS or disney’ifying.

New to your channel and I love the way your raising your pigs. 🐖 We raised pigs for years and my dad would get loads of different kinds of melon (rejects) from local farmers, slop from restaurants and other places. He worked for a vending company when I was little and we would get all the outdated pastries, candy, breads, and milk. It was a lot of work because we had to open all the packages and cartons so the pig’s didn’t eat the wrappers. It was rewarding in the end though.
Loved the videos of the pigs brings back memories
God Bless🙏🏻

Not in years.

Do you ever euthanize piglets, pigs and sows? And how long does the average sow on your farm live until it goes to the processor? Just curious, i work at a regular "factory" pig farm with 1000 sows. I love to see how you work on your farm! it brings me a lot of joy. I wish i could do this as well but there is no land a available this size in the Netherlands.
Yes occasionally for a bad injury or illness that wont treat. We normally get 6-8 parities out of a sow before they start getting to big or having breeding issues.

Those look pretty small to butcher. At about what weight do you send your pigs to be butchered?
+TheodorEriksson 250 to 300. Yes some of them are small as there are runts and culls in this group. We send them anyway as efficiency is the priority.
How are you finding the food waste streams? Is it a word of mouth thing or are they advertised? I tried to find waste sugar for beekeeping once and got nowhere.
Well, for our case we went out and found them. It took a couple of years to get in with the apples and the peanuts we found searching craigslist. For pumpkins we stopped at any patch we saw and asked them about getting the leftovers after Halloween. I guess its a combination of luck and being proactive!
How many months you sell those pigs
beautiful pigs
what breed is this?
Why couldn't you sell them?
some are runty, others were just an overage on an order, etc..
Rotten fruit or Red Redish?
What breed are they
Looking at them eating all them apples make me think about that fat meat I could be eating
so wait, you abandoned the bulk feeder?
No, we use the bulk feeders for all our piglets and growing pigs.
What vegetables, and fruits give in feeding
Whatever is economically acceptable to reduce the cost of delivered feed. We feed lots of apples, peanuts & pumpkins.
@@FarmBuilder OK green vegetables can be give
