- Pastured pigs are great, right up until its time to catch and load them! In this video we are catching a larger group of pigs and sending out to the processor. Tips on how we do it for low stress ( man & beast!) and success the first time.
I (Jordan) and my wife, Laura, own and operate J & L Green Farm in Virginia. It has been our full time occupation for the last 12 years building this first generation, pasture based, direct to retail farm. We are in the small percentage of farmers that actually make their income from farming. As such we address our farm as a business and make decisions with that in mind. What you see here is what it takes. No BS or disney’ifying.

I love the idea of putting hay or straw between the ground and the trailer to block that space from their view.
Excellent point. I missed that the first time thru. Thanks.
Very Nicely done! Patience is key to handling livestock.
I love this video shoot. The reaction of the "helpers", priceless. Deescalate, deescalate, deescalate 😃
One video I was sorry to see end so quick. Great piece!
Good day everyone. Nice video, Cryptocurrency still remains one of the best online investment mostly when it comes to Bitcoin. being the largest asset so far, although bitcoin trading and making good profits from trading bitcoin seems to be a bit difficult for most people out there because they make the wrong approach and strategy when it comes to trading. As a trader, so for i have been successful trading bitcoin because i was smart enough to do some research on making good profits daily and got to find out about a working strategy and signals provided by a pro trader known as Richard Bruce. During my first month i was able to grow my portfolio from 2.40BTC to a total of 4.7BTC with Mr Richard daily signals which you will agree that is a very good profits, so i would say don't rush and sell off, grow the little you hold with a very profitable signals. I truly enjoy your videos.
+Kevin Hobbs thanks!
I though the time lesson was fantastic and very true.
I will tell you a funny story. When I was a kid my father was attacked by a huge boar. I can still see him coming into the house furious.
Later he went and got the 6x4 trailer with a stock crate and parked it at the catle race. He worked until late but he had the boar in the trailer. He took the trailer to the garage at the lead in to the road. Put the car on and fed the boar. About midnight I was woken by a strange noise and the dogs were barking.
What happened was the boar had totally destroyed the stock crate and had escaped the trailer.
He was at the entrance to the pig pen. Dad let him in and we went back to bed. Pig 2, Dad 0.
We missed the market day and dad worked on the stock crate and made it bullet proof.
Next Wednesday the pig went to Market and pulled a fine price.
To save 1&1/2 hours it cost 1 week. Too true to hide the watch.
Thanks for sharing.
I use to work on a hog farm when I was in high school 800 hogs in house one and the 2nd house was nursery and Farrowing and shipping roughly another 600 to 800 it was awesome I enjoyed that job
Pretty good video, I really enjoyed it ty
i am looking to get started with my farm and raising pigs thank you for your video's it is a big help
John Hill awesome, glad they help!

A key point (that you have) is that the pigs do not have to negotiate a ramp or climb up into the trailer. Pigs hate that and will balk at it.
I have a hydraulic hog cart, the wheels are mounted on arms attached to hydraulic cylinders so you can lower it all the way to the ground. I normally load onto that, and then I can set the height just right for the trailer.
Great tips.
+Danny Kanyo thanks!
them sure are some nice lookin pigs, ai kin jist see the hams n bacons walkin round yer paddocks,, thank ya fer the video
At first I was like "did they forget to castrate that boar?" then you used the pen on him. Lucky guy.

We have our first breeding pair now for 6 months and are looking to expand for more land before our first set of babies. We really enjoy your videos and your patience as you work. Keep up the great work and keep making these videos please. Will you make a video on how and when to castrate after birth? Thanks so much.
+Shelia Benson thank you! Yes, have considered doing a castration video for a while. Not sure how it would go over on RUclips.
Very nice technique, keeping pigs calm. My hogs would try to run me over even with those boards then proceed to bash down the wall. 🤦🏻♀️
Lovely
nice video
Cara,muito bom!
Belos animais.
Vdd.
Nice looking hogs
oh they were so cute in my eyes
Nehrose Melgar cute and delicious ...
They are cute. that's why I can't raise em. I'd end up with 50 new pets. Every time if I did.

Just to clarify, pig sorting boards can be of any color. The key is that they appear solid to the pigs/hogs, so they don't try to push past them. Not long ago, they were all made on the farm of wood.
I'm personally waiting for the MARPAT boards to come out. Pigs will never see them coming.
@@FarmBuilder What is a MARPAT board? Apologies for my ignorance but I just started with a boar and two gilts last year. Had a buyer for them but we couldn’t get them loaded onto his trailer. The ramp freaked them out. Definitely should’ve had some red boards. Big lesson learned. Lost the sale. Now I need to separate the boar out because I don’t want to deal with winter farrowing.
Ha, it's a joke. Marpat is the USMC style digital camouflage. Sorry about your pig loading troubles!
👍👍
Why I think pigs look so funny.
How profitable is this business? You put a lot of work in and a lot of feed and apples and so on!
It is profitable. If you would like to join a more in depth conversation about this join our FB group FarmBuilder Entrepreneurs. Profitability, margins and pricing are discussed regularly.
👍
I’m about to build a loading/handling facility for dirt hogs. I’ll be loading 50-100 butcher hogs at a time so this size looks about right or at least scalable. Do you still use this system with these wood panels or have you adjusted or upgraded to another loading system?
Still use this one.
do you just take them to the butcher or do you have him come out or do you just have a date you have to have them ready by?
They are taken to a usda inspected processor. Generally we schedule the date 1-2 months in advance.
How much does each pig go for
Do you sell them to the butcher or do you have folks that purchase them from you, I was planning on raising some to butcher and a few to sell. Putting the land to use
+Michael Dillon we sell pork by the cut. These all come back to us.
Wow they look beautiful, very healthy and fattened well, congrats, where did you get the apples from?
+Nistel Rodriguez there is a large apple packing shed 20 minutes away from us. You can also work with orchards to pick them up yourself.
Boots seem important.
Do you handle your pigs with boards quite a bit? Or show them the trailer beforehand? They don't seem phased when you move them onto the trailer, jealous lol. We have very tame Berks, but they won't willingly go onto our trailer/cart, they'll try to dodge you (unless we use a narrow chute). We use boards of course but it hasn't been a cakewalk like in your video!
The key is set up trailer and corral a week in advance😉 let them check things out... Only feed them in that area during that week.. They will want to fill their belly.
is this kind of can live and survive in a tropical country like Philippines? Thank you so much
Choosing hogs that do well in your climate is very important.
Uh one of your keeper pigs (there were two with blue marks) went into the pen lol
I should say in the trailer
+Har Bshsh ha, yeah we put it back out.
What kinds of pigs do you show in this video? I'm just learning about Heritage pigs now. Are they Old Gloucestershire Stocks, Large Blacks, and Red Wattles?
+Profound Greetings from Neptune Whoops! I meant Gloucestershire Old Stocks!
They are a crossbreed we have been running since 2011. Started with Yorkshire, Hampshire and Duroc.
Farmbuilder I like the ones that were sorta brindle colored. at least that's what dogs with the color is called.
Looked like Tamworths, saddlebacks and maybe some Oxford sandys as well. Do all heritage breeds come from Britain? Are there no native north america hogs?
Correct. Pigs are not not native to the Americas.
Are you in N. Carolina?
I notice some of your hogs are not castrated. Does your processor not require this? We are in Ontario Canada and here it is required or they are rejected.
+Big Jim most processors here prefer castrated as well. Those ones you saw are 2 we had put it with the group just prior. They are replacements.
Silly, really, the requirement for castration of hogs. 'Boar taint' in the meat can be found in females, as well. And many boars have very little odor even when breeding sows. A guy in Vermont does needle biopsies of his boar's meat before using them for breeding to make sure that he is not passing along that genetic trait. Also - pigs or hogs kept in filth will have the off-flavor associated with 'boar taint' regardless of gender or whether or not they are intact.A third cause of off-flavored meat sometimes confused with boar taint, or 'gaminess' is the animal not being bled properly. This should not happen at a commercial slaughterhouse...
Boar taint is real. I tried not castrating and also missed castrating boars in the past and the smell when cooking their meat drives you out of the house. Genetics may matter but why take the chance. Castration is worth while insurance.
@@Jefferdaughter in my experience slaughterhouse pigs can be improperly bled out just like a home processed hog
@@burnshirtvalleyfarm6337 I've heard castration is only needed with older pigs, boars under a year don't develop the problem.
Are you feeding straight hay or grain to?
These guys were getting free feed as well as several hunter pounds of apples daily. During the winter months we will give hay as well.
By 'free feed', I assume you mean 'free choice' feed? Is this a commercial grain mix, or...? After all, no feed is really 'free'. :) Pasture land must be paid for, (every year, even after you 'own' it), and 'free' feed from other sources takes time and money to haul and handle.
Jefferdaughter free feed as in free choice. they had a bulk feeder in with them.
I would say only feed the pigs in the trailer hay grain etc.
Make final holding area smaller with one way gate
like
Do you butcher them to sell them by the cut?
Yes.
I am looking piglets , Do you have them for selling?
Why are you taking an uncut boar to the butcher?
What would you say your breeds are? Looks like Hampshire, old spot, ?
Cross of Hamp & Duroc.
Tell us about the butcher process do they buy it from u
These are retailed through our own store and buying clubs. So the butcher cuts to our specifications and we bring all the cuts back to the farm.
FarmBuilder so you really have to own a walk-in freezer ?
Where can buy the rad board ?
amazon probably has them.
Nothing wrong with eating them, but I think I can never eat the pigs that I raised even if I am not the one who butchers them. Maybe I will swap the meats with neighborhood farm's.
Are your pigs for sale? If so, My mother in law is interested 😊
+Patty Her we do sell piglets and pork cuts. Have her email us at orders@jlgreenfarm.com

Get on ze bus ja!! Raus mache schell!!
You made a lot of money to pay the bills. And save money. My grandfather had 90 pigs. 70 went to get sent to the piggy market. There worth money
I don't think the pigs find your calendar at all joyous... Lol
Good thing they don't use one....
Your choice of words for certain tools of the trade is amusing. 'Red boards' for sorting boards because yours happen to be red, though any color works fine... And 'holding cell' sounds like you worked for the city jail, or watched too many police procedural dramas on television. :) I think the term you meant was 'holding pen'. :)~ Also, getting the pigs/hogs accustomed to coming when called for food makes loading even easier. Animal behaviorists call it operant conditioning. To old timers it was hog calling.* Simply use the same sound or call every time they are fed, say a new load of apples, and they quickly learn to come when called. Ours came to a call and a shake of grain in a bucket - and just walked onto the trailer, following the sound of the call and the shake. Then we sort the ones we want to keep back out of the trailer. Our swine get very little grain, and don't have access to a range feeder full of it, so this works like magic. Just a little now and then so they come when they call. We've also used apples but those are pricey out of orchard clean-up season. A very similar approach to what you do, and of course everyone should 'tweak' things to fit them, their swine, their facilities, etc.*Contemporary society has painted old-time farmers as all an ignorant bunch, but letters written by farmers and published in the annual yearbook of the USDA back in the 1800s demonstrate that those farmers were much more literate than most high school graduates of today.
Appreciate you stopping by!
That farm is very muddy.
why raise boars?
Those innocent creatures have no idea where they are being taken. Sad.
The advantage of not being a conscious entity perhaps? Can you describe a food system that doesn't involve death?
No, it would be sad if they did know where they were going. Fortunately, animals are not capable of that type of anticipatory cognition.
"...not being a conscious entity perhaps? *Do you know what you are talking about?* To answer your question, yes, there is a food system that does not involve death of animal: most creatures are omnivorous. Moreover, we do not know of other creatures that eat human flesh.
Where do you get these type of ideas? Maybe, when the pigs arrive at the butchery and see the blood of other slaughtered pigs, the butcher, and his knife, they know why they were brought there. Maybe, their _anticipatory system_ make them squeal about the impending violence
Truth seeker - I am going to assume that you support and participate in local and or organic vegetable based agriculture...(for clarity I am assuming you don't eat meat). I'd like you to wrestle with the fact that most certified organic vegetables are grown with an animal based fertilizer, either BLOOD meal, or fish meal. It's a tough tough world!
