I don't think any audience has ever been silent like that. For me, that was THE single greatest performance in the history of the show. It resonated through me and was as good, if not better than the original.

I’ve seen this performance an unhealthy amount of times but damn does this man still give me chills, he really projected everything he spoke about into it, and you definitely feel it

I know what you mean- I have the same emotional reaction every time I see this.
Oh. My. God. I’m 68 yo and I’ve loved this song from the first time I heard it but I’ve never seen Brian sing it till now. (breathe)… I can now say that this is the most powerful version I’ve ever heard. When he hits that crescendo, it seemed like I was feeling every bit of the pain that he’s endured. whew… I had to remind myself to take a breath. So damn beautiful.
That silence at the end was everything

Unfortunately that was 100% edited in for the telecast. Doesn’t take anything away from his rendition though.
That was called "editing". And good editing makes you feel what they want you to feel. There was no pause like that in real time. Thank the editor.
Amazing performance, but yes the silence was total editing. Just like the two shots of pensive Howie. Once at 4:10 and then the same shot again at 7:48

When this kid reaches for the stars he brings the ground up with him. His range and power are just insane but the gentleness in the soft parts really knock it out of the park.
When you sing on one of these shows on television, and when you finish nobody can even talk, you’ve killed it.
It’s one of the best performances I’ve ever seen on these types of shows. Just beautiful. He’s amazing.

I remember seeing this on AGT and I, too, was speechless and stunned at the end like the audience.
My favorite part of this performance -- is actually his mother in the audience looking down at her son, while everyone is gawking in disbelief, she's looking at him like, 'I'm not at all surprised; look at my son!!!! I've always known what he could be!" type of pride ..... that's what being a parent is all about! and as a parent of 3 - that is what i connect to in this video... i love it....
And that silence at the end .. where everyone is collectively holding their breath is like the cherry on top!

This man has forever implanted as my favorite cover of this song not only Great singing a lot of covers are but this man hits your heart and I've heard this more than I'd like to admit but it's always made me feel and that is why he is amazing

He was on Broadway at age 17 and in traveling Broadway show companies with multiple shows before AGT, but I guess it made a better story to make it sound as if he had no experience when he’d been a working pro for nearly 12 years by that point.

Brian was my Mom's pick to win that year. Broke her heart and literally shocked the hell out of me that he didn't win. He has done some amazing collaborations since the show. One of the best, I believe is with Superfruit, feat. Brian, Mary Lambert, and Mario Jose, singing a cover of Katy Perry's "Rise".
