      +Adam Duong If you aren't on requip or some other Rx you could try Quinine tablets. They helped me for a while. Plus, stretching and working the effected muscles REALLY helps. It gets pretty bad at the front of my thighs so squats have really come in handy. I know I need an increase in my Rx when I have to do them just about every night.

      Electrolytes may help. Did for me. Alot. And it was immediate. A good sports grade electrolyte powder that you can just mix with water replaces minerals like magnesium and potassium that you may not have enough of due to dehydration. And by a good quality powder I don't mean expensive. Electrolytes are electrolytes. Just avoid the ones with high sugar and all the other added crap. I use VegaSport Rehydrator. I get mine at Shoppers Drug Mart or online.
      Most people do not understand how much real and mineralized natural water, like spring water, we need daily (along with enough minerals in our diets). We lose a great deal of these minerals through sweat and we don't understand it because most people think it only applies to athletes. Totally not true. It's worth a try if RLS drives you nuts. Try taking it at least an hour before bed. Also, going through menopause when I had constant hot flashes and night sweats causing severe dehydration, the electrolytes were the difference between functioning and not functioning, sleeping and not sleeping. Maybe it could help you too.

      I used Requip (ropinirole) for many years. And it worked reasonably well for about 7 years.
      So my advice is...get to a neurologist and ask about getting a med. like requip (there are a number of brands).
      You have to start out with small doses. Your body needs to adjust to it.
      But even small doses help, when it is the first time you take it.
      You are correct about people with severe RLS killing themselves, sadly.

      I mean a lot of people get their legs pretty sore after sitting in really small and low quality "mass produced" desks. Legs aren't made to sit awkwardly at a weird angle with a ton of the weight being absent. Maybe you just adjusted them excitedly. Could also just be your legs falling asleep too though.

      @hey lil mama lemme whisper in ya ear I get it in the center of my feet and/or hands and I follow a similar pattern, I just shut down and don't remember.
      Punching my feet and hands makes it better since the pain is preferable to RLS.
      Stretching helps, but only for a few seconds. The "point of origin" is what bothers me most and it shoots up through the legs or arms (it differs: one hand + one foot, two feet + one hand or the dreaded two feet + two hands)
      The only medication that work are medicines for parkinsons and similar afflictions. Taking a shower or keeping my limbs uncomfortably warm helps too.

    I've had this since when I was a kid I'm an adult now and still get it sometimes and all through out those years I learned how to stop it from hurting, at first I thought moving my legs would help cause it relieves pain but the problem is it never goes which leads to not being able to sleep but then I tried not moving it as long as I could until it doesn't hurt anymore and since then whenever I get restless leg I don't move my legs it's really painful at first but after that I could finally sleep.

      @Bianca Rabeje I am so so glad that worked for you. And maybe it could work for others. Sadly for many it won't. My father, or me, for example.
      If one has bad RLS, moving one's legs doesn't make the pain go away. But it is as hard to NOT move my legs, as it is, for example, to deliberately hold my hand in a fire. The need to pull my away from that pain is not really a conscious movement. Your nerves do it for you.
      When phenomenally sleep deprived from RLS, I would often just fall into a sort of incoherent sleep no matter where I was or what I was doing. My mother observed this not infrequently & said that what happened next was terrifying. I would actually be in exhausted sleep, but then my legs and arms would start to jerk and writhe so violently it looked like I was having a seizure.
      This doesn't, btw, mean one is able to eventually sleep even with the RLS going on. It is more like collapsing. I've spent so much time doing sleep studies with so many specialist...they all say that collapsing from exhaustion, and not being brought to full consciousness by the limb movement, is NOT proper sleep. It has zero recuperative value. Neither the brain nor body are getting any rest.
      You never fall into any real level of sleep, you are just too tired to be fully conscious. Rather like if you've done so much exercise that your knees are giving up, in this case, your whole body and brain are so exhausted that your brain cannot retain coherent thought, You just become incoherent, it isn't sleep.

    • @keira_churchill
      @keira_churchill 8 лет назад +5

      +Books Beauty Ameriie - I'd suggest getting tested for iron deficiency before self-medicating, or you could go the other way and find yourself getting too much iron in your diet. It's also best to investigate the cause of any deficiency and to address that directly, rather than just pop pills and hope for the best. For instance heavy menstruation, a vitamin C deficiency or general dietary insufficiency (such as being on a vegan or vegetarian diet) could all lead to iron deficiency. I'm probably safe in saying that your father doesn't suffer menstruation issues though. :)

    • @Ikajo
      @Ikajo 8 лет назад

      +Keira Churchill Not to mention that simple supplements don't contain enough iron to counter a deficiency. I've had iron deficiency. It was not comfortable and I had to eat subscripted supplements. But a good way of avoiding iron deficiency is to avoid coffee and tea, they make it harder for the body to absorb the iron we eat.

    • @keira_churchill
      @keira_churchill 8 лет назад +1

      Ikajo Also over-the-counter (non-prescription) iron supplements are usually derived from plants and therefore contain non-heme iron which is only absorbed at a rate of 2-20% (if memory serves), with the actual rate within that range dependent upon other dietary factors. The only point I really wanted to make here was for people to get tested properly before self-diagnosing and potentially causing other issues in the process.

    • @Ikajo
      @Ikajo 8 лет назад +3

      Keira Churchill Very true, you should be careful. If someone suspect they have a deficiency they should always try to start with their diet. Adding food with iron or vitamin. Always the healthiest way.

      I know this is an old post, but...literally you are the only one mentioning the requirement to "flex" that I have found. It has been happening every night, and I dont understand why. Did you get diagnosed with RLS? Or did they tell you otherwise?

    huh. I used to have a lot of issues with this but since I got put on ADHD meds and iron supplements it's all but disappeared. I know ADHD meds work by increasing dopamine levels in the brain, and the doc even said that it's the iron in my brain that is too low, so this all makes a lot of sense actually....

    I have a good friend who sometimes suffer RLS and he told me that having an orga*m (put in the "s"- didn't want to get flagged) really helped to calm it down. He said he talked to his doctor and told him about it and the doctor said that it makes sense because that "process" in the body shifts your hormones and brain chemicals.

    RLS is like being tortured inside your own body. You try to fight and not move but you can't resist because that's the only way to make it stop. You get a moment of relief. As soon as you are still again, it continues and it can last for hours. It's the worst when driving or at night when you're tired from a long day and all you want to do is go to sleep but can't.

    Yes, this is the story of my life. I do take iron and it helps. But only so much iron can be taken safely. Magnesium helps, too. And staying hydrated. And sometimes it just won't go away no matter what I do. Sleep is impossible sometimes. My mum takes a prescription for it, which helps her. So yeah, it does seem to run in families, too.

    Oh man, I would get RLS really, really bad at night after I got out of the hospital. It was such an uncomfortable sensation that's indescribable. It was kind of like tiny cramps all over my legs, but at the same time that doesn't really describe it accurately. I got my medical marijuana card and it went away completely. I haven't gotten it in 2, going on 3, years.

If it's not legal in your state for people 21 and over, then a medical marijuana card would be great!

    I have TERRIBLE restless legs at night. It actually wakes me up with the urge or reflex to spasm or flex your legs repeatedly. It's like mind controlling your muscles, and it's overbearing. I was prescribed an anti convulsant medication (Gabapentin) for my sleep and pain management. It helps so much. Sleep is so important to a functioning daily life and your overall health.

Sometimes you can do it with both legs, slower, super fast, etc. I have had it my whole life people tell me to stop and I have no self control but the amount of stress put on you when trying to control it is unbelievable
