    Being a discovery writer is the best. I'm a very loose plantser type. I write one or two sentence summaries for each chapter and just roll from that. Gives me an anchor point to hit, but leaves a lot of room for chaos and random things.

    Individuality is a big thing. Both the author and ... in a question I consider overlooked ... what does the story need? Not necessarily the *scale* of the story, but I find that a more arc-heavy piece with a lot of worldbuilding fits logically into longer writing sessions. Whereas a more episodic structure of storytelling benefits from sprints. (If someone is transitioning to novels after mostly doing short stories, they don't have to upend their entire method of work to make such a transition.)
    When you say "not all words are helpful words", it makes all the sense in the world but then I see how other writers will misinterpret what you're saying. They'll be fixated on the process for its own sake, and take a hardline on treating the draft as a draft ... rather than as the story you want to write. This is the reason I too will edit as I go, which usually involves switching out words here and there to make the forward motion of ideas clearer.

      Totally agree! And great point about taking into account what the story needs.

    I feel like we have such a similar writing process! I also tend to outline a lot more before going into a Draft 2, and I use Draft 1 as a way for me to brain-dump the story out :D For a long time, I thought I was better at working for long periods at a time every few days or so, but after trying out writing every single day, I think I preferred that a bit more but honestly I'm still trying to find out what works for me after years of writing LOL💀. I think the key importance is that I need to *deeply focus* for at least an hour or so because a 10 min sprint every day would also not work well for me 😂. Loved this recap!!

      Totallyyy agree I think the deep focus is so key!!! Cool to hear you have a similar process :)) could totally see a deep focus daily session working for me in the future. glad you enjoyed the vid :’) 🩷🩷

    Thanks! I didn't know about this challenge until this year when it was already underway. I've recently been getting into more creative writing. I wanted to finish my story by New Years and would stay up late at night but couldn't come up with anything. Then I took a step back and started to just not worry and enjoy the holidays! It gave me more ideas! Then, on New years, I wrote a letter to my friend and tried to describe my new years as best as possible for her! I'm still working on the story, but i like how it's going. I hope to attempt this challenge next year with a slice of life story!

      I’ve found that ideas come to me most often when I’m away from the project, too!! Letting ur mind wander while doing other things is where creativity thrives :) best of luck trying nano next year!

    I love your positive attitude. I have a difficult time sitting down and writing a couple hundred words a day, so I understand doing better when you can take a day (even if it's only the weekends) and really focus, even if you're taking breaks throughout the day.

    I enjoyed your video and send you positive vibes for the writing.
    I agree with you on the writing outline and always having room for creative freedom. I find my best writing happens when I go completely off road and ideas just happen on the page. I love losing myself in those moments.

    watching your nanowrimo process has been such a highlight of this month for me! and i totally agree with you regarding being more of a discovery writer. outlining is one of those things that sound ideal initially, but it doesn't always make room for change or moving in a different direction. i feel like some of my best ideas come while in flow or randomly throughout the day. and the most important thing is quality over quantity so i'd totally say you won nano ✨✨✨

    congrats on doing your first nano!! at the end of the day, what matters is discovering what works for you so I'm glad you made some discoveries! it's always a very constant journey of trial and error. What works for you today or for this project may change in the future, and there's nothing wrong with that. it's def been a journey for me discovering what works when i write haha

      Thank you so much!! Totally agree, I’m sure my process will continue evolve based on the project, what else is going on in my life, the stage of the process I’m in etc etc. and like you said, that’s totally ok! Thanks for the encouragement :)

    If I did Nano (I did it last year and it's the first and last time I would do it as well, but I did win it last year)) again this year. More than likely, I would have reached a little over 60k. But that's just me though. Since I'm also a discovery writer. Which allows me to be free of not being stuck that much. You mentioned backtracking, and I totally get you, because I do it as well. And I don't view backtracking as a deter thing. Since I see backtracking as not fixing up grammar or the little imperfections (the way I see it and done it). But I see backtracking as redirecting a story-by-story beat and maybe the overall big picture kind of thinking, subconsciously. Maybe. But then again, we all have our writing process. Have a good day.

    • @briellewrites
      @briellewrites  7 месяцев назад

      Exactly!! I feel the same way- for me backtracking is about correcting the direction of the story, not messing with the details.
