你好!It's an useful video, thanks! Only one question, I find it a bit difficult to explain the word “长” to my students, since it doesn't have an English equivalent, most of the time I will explain 长 as to grow into, and I will tell my students 长 is the verb you will use when you want to describe someone's appearance, and give them some examples. They understood but I feel there should be some better ways to explain this word. :P
长 is a polyphone and has different meanings. In this video, it has two meanings. 1. 长[zhǎng] - grow: 他长大、长高了。 He's grown up and become tall. - look like: 她长什么样子? What does she look like. 2. 长[cháng] - long: 她头发很长。She has long hair. (Advanced Chinese) 长 has many other meanings you can learn about: (1) 长(長)[cháng] adj. 1.(两端之间的距离大, 兼指时间和空间) long: In summer the days are long and the nights short. 夏季昼长夜短。 This is a long river. 这条河很长。 2.(引申为永远) forever; lasting: depart from the world forever; pass away 与世长辞 noun 1.(长度) length: The length of the bridge is 200 metres. 那座桥有200米长。 The boat won by three lengths. 这只艇以3艇长之差得胜。 2.(长处) strong point; forte: overcome one's shortcomings by learning from others' strong points 取人之长,补己之短 3.(姓氏) a surname: Chang Wuzi 长武子 verb (对某事做得特别好; 擅长) be good at; be strong in: She is good at painting.; Painting is her forte. 她长于绘画。 adverb (常) often: go about sth. little by little without a letup 细水长流 (1) 长(長)[zhǎng] adj. 1.(年纪较大) older; elder; senior: older than her; 比她年长 My brother is senior to me by two years. 家兄比我年长两岁。 2.(排行最大) eldest; oldest: eldest daughter; 长女 eldest brother 长兄 noun (领导人) chief; head; leader: head of a delegation; 代表团团长 chairman of the board; 董事长 verb 1.(生) come into being; begin to grow; form: get cancer; 长癌 have a boil; 长疮 2.(生长; 成长) grow; develop: Youth is the time of physical growth. 青年时期是长身体的时期。 She has grown so that she is even a little taller than her mother. 她长得比母亲都高一点了。 3.(增进; 增加) acquire; enhance; increase: increase one's knowledge; gain experience; 长见识 Such a tendency is not to be encouraged. 此风不可长。
Perhaps one way to think of 长 [zhǎng] ("grow") is that it describes the visual characteristics a person acquires while "growing". This could be different from a person's current appearance, which is usually described with 看起来. For example: 他长得很强壮但是今天看起来很累 ("He is strong, but today looks tired"). In this sentence, I don't think that 长得 and 看起来 can be interchanged.
Wow.. love this! Jeanette is the best Chinese teacher that I’ve ever seen. Very clear, informative and systematic. And her pronunciation is also very on point and easy to follow. Usually I always sleepy learning chinese but not with this one. Definitely will stay in tune with her excellent teaching. I am a fan of everyday chinese now ❤️👍⭐️

@@MrSalo-mein you are right. I inadvertently wrote 'hen" instead of "tai". Does 'le' need to be used with 'hen' as well? I wasn't aware that 'tai' can't be used without 'le'. (Had not come across this in the various uses of 'le'). Thank you

Now I know how to say shy and kind 😊 Yesterday each of us had to describe the appearance of one person in the classroom, but none of us used words like: 漂亮, 老, 胖, 帅. I don't know why since we already learned those words... One example from yesterday's class: 她是女的, 高高的, 瘦瘦的. 她 穿牛仔裤, 粉色T恤. 她不戴眼镜.

In the answer to the first sentence, I'm a little confused: you use 又 in the sense of 'also' to describe the man as young, then 也 to describe him as handsome and tall and slim (thin). What is the difference (if any)? Secondly, is there any preferential order to the adjectives in Mandarin in which to describe somebody or something as there is in English, which would, in this case, normally be 'young, tall and handsome' - in that order?
@@outdoorscholar6016 An interesting idea, thank you, but I'm not sure I see that applying here, do you? 年轻 (young) is a noun (年 year) followed by an adjective (轻 light, i.e. not heavy).
@@Li.Siyuan when you combine 年 and 轻 to get 年轻,it becomes an adjective that means "young" (I'm aware this still doesn't answer the original question though. I too am curious to hear if there's much of a difference)
