Dan Presland (Ne Obliviscaris) Commentary/Reaction/Analysis Intra Venus

- Thought I'd mix something up a bit here and do a commentary/thought process of what goes on during a track when playing live. A lot of this is to hold myself accountable and just basically bring up some flaws or whatever in my playing that I'd like to work on. This ended up being a bit longer than expected, but hopefully you guys get some entertainment out of it.
The track is from our 2018 North American tour in Vancouver. This is Intra Venus from the record 'Urn' by Ne Obliviscaris.
If you enjoy this kind of stuff, feel free to let me know in the comments. Cheeeers!
I proudly endorse Pearl drums, ZIldjian cymbals, Vic Firth sticks, Remo drumheads, Footblaster triggers and Czarcie Kopyto pedals.

Really interesting video! You are the coolest dude ever:D would love to see more like this :)
Hey Dan, you got me drumming mate! Thanks for all your inspiring work
Do a video on your favourite drummers and influences.
cool idea for sure!
Dan, please upload stuff other than drum playthroughs. This video was so illuminating.
dan's work on all of the NeO releases is phenomenal. the stamina, technique and most of all creativity is just crazy. also love the work with black lava and vipassi.
You sir, are a fucking beast. Keep beating them drums like you do. Love it when the artists take us into their thinking process.
thank you man
That's what I like about Dan.. He put all his effort.. Nothing sounds the same.. Every part is different... Composing the drums like no other.. He's a true influence drummer for those who want something different... Thank you man
Would love to see some double bass tutorials just spitballin here
This s really a great video, which I just now found! Thanks Dan!!!
Its also interesting to see how many of my struggles and problems (of course on a completely different level concerning the skill and execution) and ideas about how to come from one part to the other I can also find in your commentary.
Cheers!!!
Love you guys! Very much hoping you are coming to Chicago soon!
DUDE I am so glad to hear that even badass drummers like yourself struggle with that mid tempo double bass. That type of tempo is the bane of my existence.
This is sick, am down for more for sure 🙌🏻
YAAY my favorite song , analyzed by my favorite drummer !!! I would like to thank you and your band so much. You inspired me to learn drums and Tim inspired me to take back violin. Amazing music never deleting any album from playlist. Last one was the best, pure beauty and warmth.
thats super cool man, i'll be sure to pass that onto tim!
Awesome Dan I love it your an amazing drummer and a huge inspiration to me keep it up you crazy Alstrailian 👍
ohhh man, i love so much, how you play drums
I get fatigued just watching you play. LoL I’ve viewed nearly every video you’ve posted on RUclips and much of the video footage of NeObliviscaris live that’s been uploaded on various channels.
Learned of the band from VinAnd Sori’s first reaction to NeObliviscaris months and months ago. One of my favorite bands and you are probably one of the best solid drummers in modern music currently. I’m not a drummer. I do play guitar and bass though. However, watching you (and the band) play is inspiring.
Very cool that you’re able to sit back and critique your own playing. It will only further improve your ability and creativity.
Thanks for always sharing Mr. Presland.
I would like to see some more vids like this!
You are my favourite drummer, love to you from Finland! ❤️
I'm liking this! Really digging in depth anlysis videos particularly explaining how each part came together.
do more of these analysis/commentary videos
Awesome video dan!! Keep up the great work :D
I really liked this, and would love to see more! It's interesting to hear everything explained. Would not mind a breakdown of Colossus, as it has one of my all time favorite drum parts ❣️ (controling the hi-hat with one hand.)
Cool video, fantastic drumming, and loving the ink!
So yeah. Starting at 7 minutes in Devour me Colossus your right hand work and overall section I love. It's technical but smooth and free. I air drum this section and pretty much the rest of the song. So sick!!
Great stuff Dan. Always keen to watch a video like this in the future.
Awesome. Your live sound is one of my favorites.
Dan, I once commented. Danny Carey eat your heart out! And I mean it. You both are my favorites! Love you guys. Can't wait to see you all in the State's again. I didn't know of you all the last time you came. So come to Austin Tx. Please. Devour me Colossus is my favorite song. Between the your right hand symbol work and foot work also. There is a section in that song at like 4:00 in before the first break where you all are going off!! Probably my favorite section in a song hands down. Very cool of you to do these videos. What a great band with some down to earth guys as well! My kids jam ya too. Thanks from Texas!!
Keep up these videos, it's cool to hear the thought process behind the techniques
Completely dig this. More videos like this please cause it actually inspired me to practice more! You are a beast
thats sick to hear man!
I really like hearing the thought process behind your drumming. Keep up the mazing work you boys are doing Australia proud.
you are the best
Awesome idea, would be cool to see more of this stuff :)
Supercoolthing dan, greets from germany and the drumtec academy, marcus
Choice as bro ! Some nice insights into how you go about things
This was really interesting! Definately do more!
Love the honesty on fatigue and finding little ways to maintain performance. :D
Rad video Dan! Thanks for sharing 🤘
Great video. It's cool to see what you think about your own drumming and how you went about creating some elements to use in songs. I'm super lazy with practice, but man do I feel inspired to get to where you are.
Definitely keep uploading videos like this!
Thanks for this, Dan. I agree about the FOH comment, very conscientious of you to be thinking of the sound guy, not to mention pulling back the reins at the right time to allow your bandmates to have full focus. That says a lot about you, it shows not just mature musicianship, but a great amount of care for others in general.
Wohoo new vid by Dan! :D
Huge fan!! I’d love to see a video on how you incorporate the toms into your blast beats. 🤘🏼🥁
When I watch this your playing is on point and flawless, but it's good you critique yourself and you notice these things more than anyone.great video.👍🏻
I dream someday play like you
Great as always! Have you considered giving drum lessons on tour?
I generally teach on tour, and have been for some years now. hit me up on ig @dan__presland if you ever want to try work something out :)
DIG! Keep on stomping!
I'd like you to show us a vid of your daily practicing routine (if your doing any gymnastics, warm up and that kind of stuff)! Anyways, you rule! I just can't get enough of your drumming mate! \m/
perhaps a typical day in the life of, might do one at some point
Animal! Clean as.
Great and informative video. About the struggle with the midtempo double bass part, maybe playing with calves there would be easier? Harder to control at those tempos though.
i am from colombia
I really enjoy this style of video, especially where you talk about having to go into different feels throughout the song and having to think about the techniques that include thinking about the dynamics sent to the FOH. It's very cool that you're using these to hold yourself accountable, as well \m/
thanks man, I was considering doing a while video on that topic altogether
Do George Kolias :D
have you thought about a Pedal Cam for shows and or when at the studio for vids ?? also do you favour left hand or right hand blast beats as noticed the two ride cymbals are at differrent angels /heights is that cuase of hihat switches to ride with left hand compared to the other cymbals placement on the right or just placement of ease of arm length ?
done a lot of pedal cams if you check previous videos \m/
Definitely need more of these
Of the Leper Butterflies?
old one, haven't played it for ages
@@DanPresland Exactly, it'd could be interesting to see how your thought process about the song has changed and even if you would have done it differently if you were writing it now.
Plus its on the shorter side haha
22:03 😂
Also, how did you maange to keep the stamina up for two shows a night last year in Europe? 😅
just had to train hard before the shows
Hey Dan, do you feel like the acoustic foam on your walls helps reduce the reverb when playing in there? Just curious.
can you send me some exercises to practice
You look exactly like tanner Wayne from in flames
You're probably the best drummer I have ever seen. Probably far better then Mike Portnoy eventhough your styles are completely different.
appreciate the kind words dewd
I like this kind of videos! Could you also do a tutorial of "and Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope" tom tom rythm?? 🤔
i am pretty sure I did that on our patreon some time ago!
Definitely not shite, lol. Thanks. Keep it up.
With fatigue, do you think that wearing compression/calf sleeves before or during your set would help? I don't know if it would, I'm just curious.
I'm actually not sure, is that a thing? I'd definitely be keen to look into that
@@DanPresland I do long distance running and it definitely helps blood flow through that area of the body, allowing more oxygen to get to one's calves while getting build up/lactic acid out of that area. It's also great for recovery. I use Zensah calf sleeves.
what in ears are you wearing bro?
