First thought was what crazy person would hacksaw the air box out…after seeing this I reckon I’m such a person. Insane amount of work requires otherwise. Think I’d just buy a mew air box if I ever wanted to revert 😂
The air box comes out without having to disassemble the entire bike. Once you have the tank/seat off and battery out, peel everything out of way, and then its 4 bolts and some wiggling to remove it. Thanks for the info guys, but it came out fairly easy without doing a fraction of the work you guys did
It may be repetitive on most steps but a 2024 r12 nine t video at least for the differences. I’m sure once you get one in the shop. I’m excited to see what creation you guys come up with.
I put heat shrinking tube around it and closed it in the bottom to make sure dirt or water can’t come inside. After that I just strapped it against the frame. I have open filters now and it works fine.
I am in the process of this. I will cut the air filter tomorrow because I dont care going back nor will dismantle the bike for this. Then install the rapid bike evo, received the kit yesterday. I would like more details on the crank filter position and the tube extension explanation. Maybe a picture I can see?
I never expected this mod to be so involved. Almost need to take half the bike apart just for a little box. Definitely beyond my capabilities or what I'm comfortable attempting.
I cut mine out, that did push my comfort level right out. If you do cut it, wrap the frame in plastic and duck tape, also cover and protect the throttle bodies. And take your time.
Great video guys, couple little bits I will redo on mine now, like the Rapid Bike Evo location. How to balance the throttle bodies video coming next? 😁
Does the Rapid bike EVO fuel unit work so I can proceed with removing the air box in a 2022 model? Do you recommend chopping it up in pieces instead of dismantling pretty much the whole bike? I always feel like things don't go back perfectly together, especially when you're all up and done till you find a screw lying around :)
There are no Rapid Bike products available for the 2021-22 models yet, unfortunately. We cannot recommend this mod for this model of bike until we have access to a fueling module.
Is it possible/does it make sense to add the pod filters without doing the entire air box removal? I have seen airbox covers advertised on your website and others. My thought is that the old airbox would serve no purpose, but also not do any harm to remain in place and could be neatly covered up with one of the variety of covers offered. I am wondering for the folks like myself that are more apprehensive to take on this entire project at home if this is a suitable alternative? I would still plan on adding the rapid bike evo to get the throttle balancing correct.
Really great "poison bug" for DIYers. May I ask if i can cover the e;xposed temp sensor at the distribution box with a tiny box that has opening facing downwards. This is to prevent any offensive splashing of water when washing the bike or raining. our country always rain. Any advise?
Any chance you guys can link the tool you used to remove the OEM hose clamps on the air hoses? Or give a little better explanation how to remove them without a special tool?
The tools we use are unfortunately BMW workshop tools and are not available to buy online however, you can find a few options if you google R1200GS air intake clip removal tool. Simply put, the straps need to be tightened in order for the clips to release - Hope this helps!
By removing it would the bike still pass the Euro 4 or 5 inspection? And since I am here... By replacing the muffler would the bike still pass inspection for Euro 4 or 5? Thanks

I would love to do this mod, unfortunately, I don't have shop space since I currently reside in a condo/apartment without garage space. Do you have relationships with different garages/mechanics? If not, what would you suggest in finding a suitable shop capable of handling this type of modification? How many hours would this take for someone with BMW experience? Thanks
@@PierCityCustom Western Canada. 2020 R9T Standard, or what I'm assuming you guys refer to as the Roadster (gold inverted forks, black/brushed aluminum tank). I've done quite a bit in cosmetic adjustments, a few more mods this Spring with your conversion on the short list.
I love your tutorials and done it as well. Out of topic question but wanted to know your opinion on it. I live in a tropical country and i noticed the engine goes up to an average of 135 degrees C. Do you experience the same and whats your solution to it? Is this normal?
I have to say this bike is a pig to work on. I needed to simply change a battery and had disassemble a ton of stuff to even get at it. Air filter looks difficult to get at and this process to remove the air box is completely bonkers. Now… don’t get me wrong, make a pot of tea, put the heavy metal on I can do this as you say over a weekend, but honestly it is the WAY this bike has been engineered with no thought to simple maintenance tasks is sickening.
@@PierCityCustom Thanks. I'm more interested in trying to estimate the price to have a shop do it for me when labor costs are what they are, which is why I'm trying to get a good feel for a shop skilled in motorcycle repairs would take in the number of hours, to complete a job like this.
@@StitchDGlitch Sorry old mate but that is very much an incorrect assertion. If a carburettored engine yes it would improve performance, Fuel Injection requires the air box to feed air into the manifolds at a stable pressure. Do not take my word for it, do some research. If you want to spend some time and money wisely on an R9T, suspension front and rear is the best area to spend the money and time.
This video taught me that there is no way I'm gonna attempt this on my own. :)
Same here 😂
Me too!
I now realize my air box is beautiful!

Yep, could do, so long as air is able to pass through it in some way. May expose the sides, too?
Great video guys. This answers everything I wanted to ask. Congratulations on reaching over 1k subscribers too!
I have a 98 r1200c, would the airbox removal be essentially the same, splitting the frame?
Huge job, I think that the box is a requirement of rwc here in oz

A rubber block :)

Where would you mount the Rapid bike evo unit once the air box has gone, as it’s very busy under the seat? TIA

The fuel mod works a treat, the ABR kit on it's own is an aesthetic mod and not for performance.
How much you charge for this kind job please?

wow 135 is super high. i live in malaysia max i have experience so far is 122 deg C. on a heavy rain it only goes down to 118 deg C.
135C is not a problem
so I had to pull out the Martin and learn that catchy tune
I will keep my airbox but I see this as a great tutorial to replacing the rear frame

Will this work for 2021 Pure?
We do not recommend fitment to the 2021+ bikes until a fuelling unit is available.
