  • A rare hairy anglerfish that entered the Museum's collections 13 years ago had perplexed researchers with its massive stomach. However, the specimen was so rare they didn't want to cut it open to identify its last meal. Now, using micro-CT scanners, the Museum's imaging experts have finally been able to solve the mystery...
    00:00 Introduction
    00:39 What does the real hairy anglerfish look like?
    01:17 How does the micro-CT scanner work?
    02:07 What are the initial results from the micro-CT scanner?
    03:00 What prey was discovered inside the hairy anglerfish?

      They have such great big attitude for their size, I guess. The size makes sense I guess because a meal is going to be few and far between at those depths. Things are dicey at this depth because there is no plant life at all since there is no light for photosynthesis.

      Compared to most creatures at that depth it is one of the largest fish down there. Aside from the Kroyers Anglerfish, Oarfish, some species of Viperfish and Pelican Eels, it's up there with the biggest.

    • @liv1542
      @liv1542 6 лет назад +67

      Devon Couch freezing things even freeze drying them would alter the tissues and make it much more fragile than if it was fixed and preserved with chemicals. Especially if they were going to dissect it later, freezing tissues make them incredibly mushy and hard to distinguish in comparison to dehydrating and fixing with formaldehyde. When in a lab setting you're supposed to keep anything fixed in formaldehyde under a fume hood so you don't actually smell it that much.

    "World expert in otiliths"? I'm trying to imagine the thought process of someone deciding that they want to be an expert on something SO specific. Still, they certainly knew their otiliths if they could identify the last meal species just from those two tiny bones.

      Person studies marine biology, specializes in fish. In order to identify a number of closely related fish under study, person studies otoliths. In order to stay employed, person writes paper regarding the particulars of their otoliths. This paper becomes highly cited because it's useful to other scientists, person writes additional papers regarding otoliths in other groups of fish. Person wakes up after several such cycles wondering how the heck they've turned into the world's authority on fish ear bones.
