    Ronnie, with your HF consider bonding the vehicle; i.e.using copper braid to electrically connect all of your large metallic surfaces (e.g. guards to shell, doors to shell, shell to chassis, exhaust to chassis, engine to chassis, bull bar to chassis, etc) together. Easiest way is to run braid between existing bolts on each surface and using a star washer to ensure you penetrate the paint. You use braid as its a far more effective conductor of RF compared to bolted surfaces (or normal twisted cable, such as the battery/engine earth). Doing this will make the vehicle one big RF surface and stop some of the interference (which, IIRC, has something to do with surfaces resonating with the RF).
    In terms of electrical items (fridges, lights, etc), wrap the power cables around toroids (you get can get them from Jaycar) to again stop interference. Both reasonably time consuming, but fairly cheap and will make a big difference (though it'll never be a UHF obviously).

    Great simple video Ronny, Love your work Pete Willmott Ex Icom Aus, Incidently, moving all the HF to the rear is a good move, make sure the Barret is grounded to the CHASSIS and all other HF radio grounding to the chassis. Took my noise on Icom HF from S9 to S3 on 3 and 7Mhz, none on 10Mhz and S3 on 14Mhz...a winner. Good choice on the 400, still the best today

    Ronny, in another video you explain the differences between a 3db and a 9db antenna. Why did you decide to run two 3db's instead of a a 3 and 9 with a switch? Great videos!

    I also carry a PLB, the spot device is great as a tracker, mine is mounted to the windscreen reporting every 10 minutes, but the Cospas/Sarsat
    system is better for emergency services to find you with because rescue aircraft can track them directly not use data from a 3rd party, particularly
    important if your in a drifting vessel

    Ronnie, with regards to your HF antenna, they are very particular about grouding.
    The more you ground it, the better it will perform and your noise floor should reduce also.
    Use some good quality grounding strap and not just for the antenna to the body. Ground all of your body panels together with the same strap in order to get the best results.

    Ronnie, in your newer videos it looks like you eliminated the HF radio. Is that correct? I had HF in my Jeep Wrangler but removed it due to the interference from everything else on the Jeep. The only way to use it was to turn off the jeep.

    thanks for the overview, I have the SPOT and have utilised it to track our outback trips, it's a great device my only criticism it's expensive, my subscription renewal came in at $300 this year. I have the highest level so I can ping the satellite at 10 min intervals if required but even the basic subscription would be $200-250 AUS annually. I also have a Sat. Phone and this is $180 a year for the basic service, that is if you did not use it at all. Both have emergency services buttons, so as a grab when it's needed in a life threatening emergency a Sat phone is a better option and you can talk to an emergency services representative and they can talk you through an issue and come better prepared. I purchased SPOT Gen 2 purely for the tracking and for this purpose it has never missed a beat.

    Having a amateur radio licence only cost is about $60 a year and it opens up so much more of the hf band. For a small outlay and wiring you can have real time tracking via the APRS network and plotted online. Tracking range is virtually world wide

    suggestion - satellite phone can replace HF and spot. about $700 to buy a handset and about $175/yr subscription + calls costs (almost $0). has australian mobile number. dock it on the dash to receive calls like normal mobile (receives through windscreen OK). prank call family, then they call you back @ normal aus mobile rates. talk as long as you want. Can SMS gps coordinates too. would be interesting to compare HF purchase, install, license costs as well as spot purchase and subs. i didnt go this way as i expected sat phone would be better and do everything better.

    Hello from Texas! Very cool look at your setup. It's been a big debate in my own head about getting into a HAM radio or not. It's the kind of thing that would be cool, and I can convince myself it's handy, or for safety, or whatever. But really, how often will I use it?
    Do you think it's really just a thing to have, or really worth it?

    • @Ronny_Dahl
      @Ronny_Dahl  8 лет назад +2

      Worth having for emergency which should be the main reason and the the bonus reason is it's pretty cool to chat on a radio, has a retro and remotes feeling to it. Talking on a phone feels too common and would take away the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere. That's my view on it 😉

      In the United States, HF/27Mhz CB radio totally dominates over other options (ham/amateur, GMRS, etc). There are perhaps thirty to forty times more CB'ers than Ham operators, for example. I keep a cheap ham and GMRS radios in my truck (for fanboys of those), but my primary focus for communications is on CB.

    Moving the HF away from the Engine will help, but you may have Common Mode Noise as well and may need Ferrite Chokes on the feed line at the Antenna and at the back of the radio. I operate HF mobile from my 18 Wheeler here in Canada, and the States( Ya I have to deal with the Bloody Yanks).

    How are the CB radio users in Western Australia? Here in Melbourne we get nothing but dickheads and now 90% of the time I run mine switched off.
    Was thinking about getting a HF radio (I asked what that antenna was in a previous video I watch, please excuse that as am now up to date) to replace the CB however after watching this I think that wont happen.
    Do you honestly think its worth having the HF radio for that just in case moment with all the fee's and courses?

    • @glowbugVT
      @glowbugVT 8 лет назад +2

      I've had my ham license for 15 years in the US; what he says about HF in the truck is true, it's really not very practical to use while moving. In my current Jeep, I'm not planning on installing a permanent HF antenna, but just keeping a roll of wire around in case I need to set up a temporary antenna. Most of the places I visit have trees around, though.
      We don't have an equivalent of the VKS network in the States, but there are certain frequencies that are monitored for boats and such, if one got into trouble they could probably be heard by someone.

    I think putting the antenna on the roof like that is a mistake since now your vehicle is higher specially driving in woods. You should have that antenna pivot so I can just lay flat on top of the roof and when you need to use you pop it up just like I do in our army trucks in Spain

    • @Ronny_Dahl
      @Ronny_Dahl  8 лет назад

      It does pivot down sideways just failed to mention that in the video.

      @Cassie Harry oh yeah the repeaters. I'm talking simplex though. I know you can talk far on a ionospheric propagation but that doesn't happen everyday. The curvature of the Earth alone mitigates the transmission distance.

  • @dubious6718

    Why most people put the antennas on the bullbar?
    That would just irritate me when driving
    Currently I only have VHF handheld, but might get a TETRA handheld soon (Emergency unit in Norway so I can talk with the whole county)
    Not sure how much use I will have for UHF or HF for that matter

    • @jetsgo66
      @jetsgo66 8 лет назад

      Probably so they can see what they are going to hit, as well as for looks. Also I don't have an antennae but my lights and stinger don't bother me so some people probably just don't mind

    Just one minor pedantic gripe, as the HF radio you have operates on the VKS737 frequencies, and your license for it is a VKS737 license, It shouldn't really be referred to a a Ham Radio, as Ham Radios are operated on different frequencies and under a different license. Its not uncommon however for licensed Ham operators to use Ham Radio in combination with VKS737 while out bush.

  • @jasonhowe1697
    @jasonhowe1697 6 лет назад

    Ronny please stop with misinformation and understand this there is only specific call freqs on uhf given it is a repeater system technnology..
    Vks does not cover you the entirety of the hf spectrum
    to be honest for actual comms
    I would suggest
    27Mhz for convoy use at 4-5 watts, if skip is good you have lsb and usb for long distance comms
    UHF x2 1 in wideband and the other in narrow band
    Wideband tends to better for distance
    Note be careful in using icoms because if they go above 4-5 watts .. exceed this you will be breaking comms law
    ah best respond out of the codan you have is freq tune the antenna

    • @jasonhowe1697
      @jasonhowe1697 2 года назад

      @Cassie Harry sadly Cassie know the limitations of the hardware in use before commenting...
      Noting I have been around cb's since the 80's noting half of ronnies radio equipment isn't type accepted for cb use..
      direct line of sight on uhf is 2.5 km even less when you use HT radio to mobile...
      understand the limitations of a 5 watt pep and its radial distances...
      most likely Ronnie had been hitting either base stations or hitting someone's farm repeater... in his road travels reflecting off of their 40 foot mast...
      note we are the only country to have an hf emergency system what you a covered on by that doesn't cover you for Amateur radio unfortunately same with both vhf and uhf amateur bands
      Before commenting on what I know or don't check your own regulations Cousin most likely ...
      Since my family tree has Harry's in it

    • @jasonhowe1697
      @jasonhowe1697 2 года назад

      @Cassie Harry i was not talking about ic 400 pro
      you can do up to 100 km on a repeater link however you still at a physical radial distance of 2.5 km los, pending on repeater output and height of the repeater antenna
      Yes I know icom has compatible uhf cb in 477MHz however unless he recent;ly replaced his hand talkies over recent years which I doubt these can be configured operate under 477MHz cb band however are not type accepted as these are sold as ham/amateur radios...
      I don't giver 2 fucks what mobile radios Ron uses my concern as they are type expected in most cases ...
      The baofungs/baofengs I typically seen him function with are programmable to 477 cb though aren't type accepted for it...
      These are amateur radios and operate legally 430-440MHz..
      Not sure what mobiles he is running today last I saw it was either uniden or gme uhf, I do know of a ic 41 pro hand held for uhf cb however due to cost i can't comment whether Ron uses them
      But what do I know I can only go on videos past or present of comms setup
      Last I checked I haven't seen a HF or vhf setup in his either in comms preps..
      and some serviced radio services we have active within the hf spectrum outside of 27MHz cb radio which doesn't require amateur radio licensing still requires things to be purchased to be compatible for those services though the registration and license still have to be paid to use such services ..
      .

    • @jasonhowe1697
      @jasonhowe1697 2 года назад

      @Cassie Harry lol the original promise of UHF cb was a commercial communications standard before the cb industry got deregulated ...
      don't give a shit what business you own and how long you have been in operation if you know anything radio communications you know you have to comply with ACMA regs..
      even knowing most don't give a shit what they use...
      I love ronnies content however he does step into the grey area of radio comms gear...
      So i guess you have your ham radio license then?????
      qualified in codan and other radio formats and forth..
