Nice setup! I jailbroke my Amazon Fire tablet ($100) and installed Garmin Explore, now I can link it to my Inreach Mini 2 and use it the same way without having to buy a new device for $700-$1100!
Solid setup, you influenced me to adopt the magnetic set up in the past video and I’m getting ready to do the midland comms hard mounted like yours. It just looks clean and out of sight. if you haven’t already could you do a a short video on how you have the midland mounted and hardwired into the glovebox, a basic tutorial would be rad, did you need to drill a hole for the hand mic, etc. Enjoying the content and Tacoma build all the way out here in the desert of California!
Yo thanks! The radio is just velcroed inside the glove box and I notched a small hole for the wire to run in the back of the removable plastic panel. Super simple. And ran the wire behind along the firewall and out the front passenger accessory wire hole into the engine bay, to the battery. Hand mic magnet is actually superglued to the dash. Adhesive wasn't strong enough.
Not confident those magnetic mounts are going to do the job if you get into really rough terrain. Just used two in our 2005 Jeep Rubicon TJ on the Florida Adventure Trail and our iPad mini running ONX and a smart phone both fell off. We are switching to more positive grip with RAM or Bullet mounts. I do like your setup - we ran a vehicle mounted Midland Radio with low profile antenna and two handheld BAOFENG DM-1701 Digital Two Way Radio DMR Analog Walkie Talkie GD-77. Added a Garmin 700i Montana both for emergency communications as well as second navigation system.
Really sweet setup & I like how thorough you are in sharing your experiences with your setup. I will definitely be borrowing some of your layout ideas for my rig.
@@ArkansasOffroad Thanks, given that I usually camp in remote African locations this was an issue for me which I ultimately solved with a 150w cigarette lighter inverter which I plug the base charger into. A better option will eventually need to be a higher quality dual battery system with inverter setup, though I’m trying to keep it functionally simple for now. Maybe they’ll bring out radios charged via a usb socket in the near future. 😀
How much memory does OnX use? How much memory would you suggest for an IPad? Loved the video and your setup. Great idea modifying the mounts for the magnets, I’ll definitely use this.
I’ve got the Garmin Tread too and my mount is just a snap on one, did you purchase the magnetic mount/charger separately? That would be much nicer to have I’m always struggling with mine.
You said you had issues with the Garmin BC 50 front facing camera. Curious what issues you've had. I have a Tread Overland and just installed a BC 50 on my Colorado. So far working fine, but just installed it. Haven't taken it on the trail yet.
@@ArkansasOffroad just took it on the trail. Yup, would disconnect after some time. Needed to turn the truck off and on to get it to reconnect. Disappointing... though it was useful for the few times I did need to to avoid "that rock".
Just found your site today. Really nice set up . I like the ram rail you have. Question what exact mount do you have on side closets to passenger seat. I found the rail system, but ram keeps suggesting the really big 4 prong phone holder. Can't seem to find anything similar to the small set up you have with added magnet from seperate manufacturer. Thanks any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Have new 4runner coming soon. Looking for cool mods, like yours!!
The InReach mini doesn't really need much interaction while driving does it? I figured most use it to give better gps access to other devices via bluetooth. I'd be interested in mounting it in a window away from view so as not to crowd the dash.
Correct, it doesn't need interaction while driving. I used to use solely for the iPad until I learned it's not necessary for my iPad. Guess its time to move it!
Clean setup! Question about your iPad though, do you use a hotspot from your phone to it or do you have a data plan for the iPad? I figured that would be needed unless On X Off-road can be used offline. I'm a newbie to the overlanding world and just getting into the tech side of the gear and just curious. Thanks in advance man!
You can use ONX off line, you just need to download the maps beforehand. I just used ONX with downloaded maps driving the Florida Adventure Trail and it worked find. My son did the same but he linked his IPAD Mini with his smart phone by a hotspot.
12:28 I hate using my phone for navigation. I rather have a my phone free for talking and or bluetooth streaming on occasion. But I don't like doing that either. I copy my music to a usb stick. So all these new radios wanting to use android auto and apple auto is annoying.
I've had buddies have lots of issues with SwitchPros. 2 of my friends actually. I haven't had any issues at all with the Garmin Tread. The only issues I was talking about in the video was with an optional bluetooth camera. The camera itself was shutting off because of a battery issue with it.
@@ArkansasOffroad Thanks for the response. I picked up the Garmin PowerSwitch during BlackFriday. I'm going to give it a shot. Are you using the "Control Inputs" feature at all? I have a few questions about it and the info out there is slim. I'm wondering if I tap an ignition source, can turn amber backlights on/off. Also if I can tap my high beams for a trigger. Thanks again!
@@El_Dangeroso Nice! Congrats. So for the backlight feature for the amber on lights, I have yet to figure that one out. I bought my baja designs lightbar second hand and haven't been able to get the backlight to come on. Ive tried a variety of switches. Exhausted my efforts. Not sure what's up. I would think the backlight and the fully on light are different switches, so theoretically, you should be able to have 2 separate buttons for them.
Thanks for sharing your setup… I’m trying to figure out what I want to do in my Jeep Liberty. I’m really surprised you like OnX over GAIA. I pay for both, and 9/10 times find GAIA way better. Also, I use my iPhone to shoot from the cab too, but with CarPlay or even using without, it doesn’t mess with navigation when I go to video mode (just shuts off my music), maybe your settings are off?
I have Gaia still too. Gaia is a great overall mapping software, integrating onroad and offroad maps. I like onX for strictly offroad because how simple it is. It's almost "feature less" in ways, which I like. Gaia is super in depth and complicated. Both have their place. When I use my iPhone for mapping, bluetooth music, and shooting video, it kills my battery. That's really why I like them separate.

Good call on the mounts. Every new phone I get I always put those metal plates on the back of my case.

Love how you setup your rig👍 Hope to see you on trail.
Good luck with your new website! I will bookmark and browse around. Add some stuff to my xmas wishlist.

Great video and very impressive set up. It is clean, organized and has some redundancy too. I like it. Congratulations on launching the website too!
Thanks a ton!

How does the iPad receive the GPS signal from the Garmin GPS receiver? Do you blue tooth connect through the iPad?
Bluetooth
Do you suggest a size of iPad mini? Like do you need one with a lot of storage? Possibly for saving maps?
What spare tire holder is that
Great setup! Question- how did you get the scosch to attach to the ram piece? Glue or 3m tape ?
Thanks! For the phone mount? I super glued it.
How did those rugged walkies work out for you? I noticed you still have the midland handheld.
Does the magnet on your phone interfere with wireless charging though?
Do you have a link for the mount to the right of your Inreach?
Awesome, thanks! How do you charge your handhelds in your vehicle?
I charge them at camp with the included base.

Speaking of patches, where did you get that patagucci patch? I'm going to have to pick up some of your merch as well. Great video!
Ha, nice eye! I got that at an expo I was at.
Chk out the website, sold out on tshirts, when’s the restock coming?
I’m phasing out shirts and focusing on smaller items. I do have a brand new coffee collab shirt available.
@arkansasoffroad what is the midland mount accessory you're using for the hand held attached to your roof?
It's just the mic mount that comes with a typical hard mounted radio
What garmin tread is it do u have a model number love the setup
Can the garmin overland also do the option to run all your switches for rock light and light bar?
Yes
I’ll try again with the patches..I have a 2019 and they didn’t want to stick
Do you recall the brand of that cup holder? Ty for the video.
