I was lucky enough to be grandfathered into my final copy of perpetual. Though I will lack support and updates, I am happily still using my 2021 version of ZBrush.
You aren't missing much. Some useful features but like 80-90% is just bloat and unnecessary tools to justify subscriptions.

It wasnt worth it on its own before, but if done *really* strategically (by paying very close attention to sales on Novedge) one could get Zbrush cheaper by getting Core first. that is obviously no longer the case, and core is just as worthless now as it was then compared to the free option of blender, because as you said, they havent updated the thing. But that (i assume defunct) upgrade path was the only reason i ever fussed with core to begin with. the whole time i had it i was just waiting for the right sale on Novedge to upgrade to full and used Blender instead.
Definitely lucky is have access to my student email after graduating and that my school as an open verification. End up getting the student Zbrush for $20 a year. Only limitation is one device, have to renew every 6 months, and no commercial use; but since im still learning as a hobbyist, not making money from art (and not sure if I ever will) its no biggie and morally not too bad. Atleast its better than piracy.
