    Today I review the LG 38WN95c ultra-wide monitor to decide whether or not it was worth it and if I think ultrawide curved monitors are actually any good or if dual monitors or 4k monitors are better. I mainly base my review on productivity, although I touch on ultrawide gaming which this monitor can be used for as well.

    Mine is the older version with a 75Hz refresh rate and it is definitely the best monitor purchase I've ever made. After 3.5 years of heavy usage for work, the size of the monitor is perfect. My only dream upgrade is to have it with an OLED screen.

      @@Svenrutten Yeah, I don't think OLEDs are great for productivity work compared to IPS. Not just burn in but text can look pretty average compared to IPS, particularly with Macs and only 1440p resolution. If you're only really use it for gaming then OLED all the way.

    Thank you for the review. I have learned to embrace the USB type A 1-3ft cable for hard to reach ports. I already know people are going to say "BUT U LOSE SIGNAL INTEGRITY!" and my response is that speeds are just theoretical when talking maximums. You really have to just ask yourself does this transfer at a speed you are happy with? Does it give you access to inserting a thumb drive or a mouse/gamepad dongle? I don't care about losing 100Mb/sec when its transferring at 4Gb/sec. Thats a trade off I'm willing to make for access. Same goes for audio cables. 1ft pigtail extensions and label them.

      @@NickKendall I've been using Davinci Resolve but lately, I've been using Premier Pro. For the example I gave you, it was a video I was editing for my IG. The skin tones had more magenta in them on the screen and once I exported and airdropped it to my phone it looked it didn't look the same. Unfortunately, today there was a connectivity issue and I had to send it back. So now I'm trying to decide if I should get the same monitor or if I should upgrade to the 38WN95c.
      Did you have to calibrate your monitor out of the box?

    • @NickKendall
      @NickKendall  Год назад

      Hmm does the export look different to the preview on the same screen? It honestly sounds like your export settings might be the culprit. Prem exports can be tricky but they’re even more tricky in Resolve I find. I export using the color space tag as DCI-P3 and the gamma tag as sRGB (from memory that is, I’m not in front of my computer right now). But I haven’t done any calibration on the monitor. I use it in the P3 mode.

      He mentioned he was looking for a brighter monitor, and the 40" 5k2k is fairly dim. That's a major reason I'm not getting it.
      My second major reason is that MacBook Air M1 and M2s can't handle HiDPI at resolutions that large, and I use one for work. I'd like to use 5K2K native, but at 40" the PPI would make screen objects too tiny for me.
      I think I'm going with this 38" 3840x1600 for now. Maybe in a few years there will be some solid 5120x2160 options in the 45"-49" range, and I'll consider upgrading. GPUs should start catching up then too 😊

      @@MrLaurichu Not really. Apple can do pseudo HiDi, but it's not that great. Only way to really improve it is to get a monitor with a higher PPI, and unfortunately larger sizes haven't caught up due to current tech.
      Now that DisplayPort 2.1 is starting to be implemented, hopefully we'll see high PPI on larger screens that can also support higher refresh rates. But until then, we have to choose either high PPI or high refresh on screens >= 48"

    Do you have any idea why?

Ifni dont turn off the monitor every 7 or so minutes itll come back on and say “no signal, entering power saving mode shortly” and wont stop. Do you know how to fix that?

    If I pay $450 more and get the LG UltraWide 38WN95C with 144hz is it worth it to pay the difference?

      Honestly, 60-75hz is all you need for productivity.The extra HZ is nice for gaming but I'm not sure it's worth a jump of $450 if you only game occasionally. That's just my thoughts though :) I game occasionally as well, but most of my use on the monitor never really makes use of the higher refresh rates.

    So let me ask two questions and make a statement based on my experience with Mac's Apple silicon scaling issues...
    1.) How painfully small is the text at the monitor's native resolution of 3840x1600?
    2.) How unpleasantly muddled is the display when you scale down to a lower resolution so text isnt so tiny?
    >> Dont get used Apple's poor quality scaling and accept it as normal. I run a Windows PC and an M1 Mac on the same monitor. If you look at Mac's graphics long enough, no matter how poor it is you will get used to it... until you switch back over to the Windows PC on that same monitor and realize how crisp and sharp that monitor truly is when used with a PC that can do proper scaling and graphics output.
    My point is: The Windows scaling and text is crisp at any resolution while the M1 Mac is dull and muddled at any resolution other than "native", which is inherently too tiny to be practical.

    • @NickKendall
      @NickKendall  Год назад +1

      Hey that's super interesting about the difference between mac and pc scaling! I'd be really curious to try a pc on the monitor now. But in terms of your questions; text is perfectly legible for me at the native resolution and I have scaling all the way down to more space. I have noticed that at times text is a little blurry in some applications and not as crisp as the macbook itself, but I've never found it to interfere with my work.

      Thanks for the reply @@NickKendall 🍻 I have several monitors that I run on my M1 MacMini (16GB Ram) and anything less than an over-priced 5120x2880 5k monitor is a visual compromise. However, my fix for "too small text" with a typical 4k monitor was simply to get a bigger monitor.
      I recently up graded from a 34 inch Dell UltraWide to a rather monstrous LG 43UN700-B flat screen 43 inch 4k monitor. That beast took care of the "too small text" problem. LoL
      I usually scale down one step from its native 3840x2160 to 3008x1692. I also (occasionally) use BetterDisplay by waydabber but IMHO it is not really necessary with a monitor this large. I can get the size I want without the fuzzy looking text or over-crowding when multiple apps are open.👍

      I believe this model only has the ability to display two source feeds at a time if that's what you're referring to? So you could have a laptop and a console plugged in and see both displayed at the same time for example.

    You're not going to get it replaced for one stuck pixel. It's a consumer grade equipment with higher allowed number of failing pixels. Only the military grade monitors are supposed to be perfect and replaced which if you can find at all is going to be probably twice or more the price

Secondly, even if they just watched a yt video it might be from some other creator who they refer to or to quote them.
