    So many instruments were being introduced and some were coming out of obscurity at the time, that are pretty much absent these days. Would love to see them find a permanent home in ensembles.

      I really like to use the bass trumpet, as well as soprano and Bb cornets, and alto and baritone horns, in most of my orchestral and band music.

    could a euphonium player play this?

    • @THall-vi8cp
      @THall-vi8cp 4 года назад +39

      Probably. Would take some adjustment. True bass trumpets have a significantly narrower bore than a euphonium - this one appears to be a Thein NY model, which has a bore of 13 mm (on the larger side); by contrast, euphoniums typically have a bore that ranges from 14.5 mm to 16.8 mm. There is no compensating system (the 4th valve is usually the length of 1+3). The mouthpiece would be somewhat narrower and shallower than what would usually be used on a euphonium.
      The music is sometimes written in treble clef, though that may not be an issue since euphonium sometimes is as well.
      Oh, and it would be advisable to get one in Bb so you wouldn't need to learn both new fingerings and an entirely new feel.
      I would love to get one, but I worry it may kill my trumpet chops. It certainly would kill my bank account.

      My uncle has been thinking about getting one so he can practice while traveling. A bass trumpet is much smaller than a trombone or even one of those Wessex travel euphoniums

    • @kaziiqbal7257
      @kaziiqbal7257 3 года назад +1

      TL;DR, yeah but be sure to get it keyed in B flat and don't overblow. A B flat bass trumpet is to a baritone as a baritone is to a euphoniums (or rather the marching variants of a bari or euph).

    • @onthatnote5391
      @onthatnote5391 3 года назад

      BrassBoy1120 no, the mouthpiece is still quite a bit bigger to be directly interchangeable. Alto/tenor horn mouthpiece is like a big, deep trumpet mouthpiece, bass trumpet mouthpiece seems to be close to tenor trombone size if not just a hair smaller

    • @BrassBoy-ot4sy
      @BrassBoy-ot4sy 3 года назад +1

      On That Note ok. I meant more could you replace the tenor horn or alto trombone with this in the orchestra? As in, does it play in the same register and is the sound similar enough to take their place?

    • @onthatnote5391
      @onthatnote5391 3 года назад +1

      BrassBoy1120 ah, I see. I don’t have enough experience with the instrument to know that for sure. It may have a similar sound and you may be able to play some music in the same register but beyond that, I’m not sure.

      Pitched in e flat I would imagine it is the same. Pitched in b flat, it would be some mish mash of a high trombone/euphonium and a horn with the sound characteristics of a trumpet.

      @@Potter5416 No, it isn't. Bass Trumpets have a more metallic a focused sound. Composers understood this, so they wrote for it very different in comparison with the Trombones. Some makers use the same characteristics of tubing for their Bass Trumpets and Valve Trombones, but that's an error that needs to be stopped.
